  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic + Canon Mount = Delicious

I'm curious which shots are bothering you with their framing? I know that theres a shot of a woman entering the venue, but she wasn't the subject, the tuxedo she's carrying was the focus, so her head was cut off at the top. Is that one of the shots you were talking about?

Yup. I'm thinking there were other ways to accentuate the tux without the unfortunate decapitation. The first, most obvious thought was to shoot from the other side, or ask her to throw it over the other shoulder. A looser frame with more tux and less of her backside might have been more pleasing.

The other is the shot of the dress immediately following. From what we can see of her, the lady is quite attractive. Even with her face fully framed the dress would still dominate, and a frame full of pretty girl with a wedding dress is better than one of a dress and a trailer.

I mean no offense. If this was a live event, maybe you did the best you could. If it were staged, then I would be more critical. Since I am only guessing, suffice it to say there is room for improvement in those two.

Those particular shots weren't staged, I was just running around trying to grab stuff before we got going. But yes, totally understand what you mean.

this to me is like a classic 5D video. may be the lens? the image is just too digital...
sorry
I'm sure it would be more informative if you were specific in your criticism. What about it looks "too digital", and how is that equivalent to "a classic 5D video"?

(...)

sure. (sorry my english)
too digital image: low contrast too much detail too sharp no good filmography camera moving all around like a stupid bird and tilted too.
there's no a real subjet to shot at, the people are all cutted head but the most importand to me thingh is that the image I see have no difference from a 5D video..
guys the first time we saw a red video we are all amazed.. this video to me look the same contrast the same color from a video from 5D...
and this is becouse you use the canon lens for sure... 60k $ to achieve this result is not good for me... invest in a good cinema lens make the difference.
I remember you that this is just my opinion. don't be angry.

Let's put some order on it please? :-)

Are we speaking about aesthetics? Or something else? Once I don't see any aliasing/moire effect on it. Not artifacts of any kind. Twixtor ones either. Not even the softness (it means lack of detail) of fake-like 1080p. Try to put it in a big big big screen upresing it in order to compare with a native 4K/5K and then we can talk ;-)

BTW, I am a 5D Mark II adopter from day one as much as GH series* 1080p.

I think maicol couldn't articulate this because of the language barrier - but perhaps some of the natural light situations are "Low Contrast" it's not the "Low contrast" of the "film stock" per se - but rather the ratios of the lighting in a given environment (not a criticism - we sometimes have to shoot what we have in front of us) I'm sure Maicol thinks that its a camera trait - but its probably because many 5D videos are shot without lights and thus have a "low contrast lighting" that makes them look muddy. I'd say you did a great job with what you were probably given and had time to do. A lens won't change the lighting ratio of what you are shooting - but a faster lens would move middle gray to a higher place if you have to shoot wide open because there is no light. Kudos to you for putting your gear to work in this way. I'm a fan.

sorry I would not be a flame in this post... Just my 2 cents ...
I'm speaking about the feeling that this video give to me, I saw the video on the forum not at full screen.
I saw and it give me a bad looking digital image feeling... nothing to do with the amazing color or deep of field or exposure latitude
but I repeat there are many many factor, from vimeo compressione. to my monitor quality or other one. :-)
I don't think this must be an issue for you, just keep filming and epress yourself...

Thanks Stefan. I have not used auto-focus at all in practice. From the testing I've done, it's somewhat useless right now. Maybe it's something that'll improve, but I've tried all the different focus modes and found that the lens can only find a sharp focus (on the subject that I want) about 30% of the time. I could be doing something wrong though.... (that's likely the issue hahah)
I guess we'll just have to wait a little more, untill RED have some time for the firmware upgrades. I'm pretty sure that the AF will rock, but it seems to me that they just needed to get those mounts out of the door first.

I certainly appreciate your input! You're entitled to your own opinion too. I'm still learning with every shoot and hope to improve, so I appreciate the criticism!

Exactly my thoughts as well.
