Im tired of all those people saying their Canon 5D cameras can do better low light than any RED epic/red... then making those vimeos and youtubes to prove it..
Seriously.. is it true? Or are the epic videos they use to compare with just not post-produced?
Is the 5D really better at low light?

more information in low light.. less need for lights. higher iso/less grain.. just repeating theories. naturally i hope they're wrong

Low light...low light is nice for some situations...but what the epic has that the 5D does not have quite as well... Dynamic range. The Epic from what I have seen, does well enough in low light. I think I saw Graeme comment on a post about how the c300 sacrifices dynamic range for its low light abilities...And I guess that would be the same for the 5D. In cinema...you need lights anyway...If you can light well, then it really shouldn't matter much. ;)

hum.. so technically.. in a very low light situation and you are gorilla shooting without lighting for a few permit-free shots.. its good to have a 5D body in your backpack just in case ;)

I wouldn't trust the 5D at over 1250iso.. So basically, to me, I would shoot with the EPIC or ONE at 800 and push a bit in post, you canT compare the quality of the 5D and the REDs.

Over 1250 on the 5D starts to bring out hot pixels, and un wanted noise in the blacks..

BUT

in some situations, on certain projects, this is acceptable. On a project with a mediocre budget, I would never compromise quality for a a quick exposure.

Your changing your original question..

er.. im voicing a theory from your answers in the same thread.. isnt this site for discussions and thoughts?
im just trying to get info, to know if its useful to have both an epic and a 5D; or if the extra investment on a 5D is pointless. Trying to put a rumor to rest.

ok.. good to know about the hot pixels over 1250.. thanks. :)
so when you cant light a certain night location (cos you just can't), the epic can be pushed a lot more in post and get the low-light information the 5d can?

*(i understand the epic is far superior and RAW, higher red, etc etc.. im just referring to low light visibilty with/without grain)

Guys... These questions are getting me real curious as they pop up...

How many of you are shooting dramaticals without lights?
How's the distribution model and box-ofice results for these non-lit features?

No spite intended, but just really, really curious.

Repeating myself here, but what I find relaving with the Epic, is that you can really light for it, NOT that it doesn't ned light...

Cheers!

i dont want to sound like a crazy guy.. but a deep part of me believes a future with lighting-free filmmaking. A sensor as sensitive as the human eye. Using real available light.. after all, isnt lighting basically a way to try to make an image equivalent of what the human eye sees? Lighting in the future i think will just be for artistic expression, to make images differ to what a person sees day to day. because the sensor will no longer need it. just a crazy theory

I've shot with 2000 and 3000 asa night exterior where the city light reflects in the clouds. You can get really beautifull picture without lightning, this doesn't meen there is no light.

No light = no picture.

Define : "it doesn't need light"?

The Epic is really a low light beast. I love the noise Epic makes. I would love to shoot a whole picture with 2000+ asa.

Patrick

sorry patrick.. i mean without bringing your own lighting. using what it there. Just you and your camera at any time of day :)

Hey patrick!! Lausanne Switzerland?? I was born in Ouchy!!! visit every year!!

My sole reason for getting into Red was 13+ dynamic range and RAW color correction. Finally 5K has made me dream of a producing a feature film. Neither the 5D or 7D has given me any of this. Low light sensitivity has never been an issue to me, I use lights when I need them.

The guy who shot "Jack the Giant Killer" said one reason he chose Epic was because the piece required use of available light (non-electrical). I shot at test with my Epic with only a candle light near a face and I thought it was terrific. (ISO 800)
