  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC and Alexa...

I'm wondering if Alexa will push RED to get a ProRes module out the door.

Doubtful... If RED is doing one, I'm sure they have their own schedule and had or has nothing to do with the Alexa. But that's pure speculation, as usual.

It definitely colors the perception of workflow differences between the two cameras

The problem is the workflow differences are just that; perceptual. Once again we fall into grey territory and subjective points of view about "good enough". Sure, the Alexa can record direct to ProRes... So if that's "good enough" for you, then great. If you want RAW, Alexa will do that too. But you need an expensive add-on recording device with expensive media. And what systems currently support the new ARRI RAW format? Oh, right...

I would not be against a ProRes module for the RED cameras. I would welcome it because I think it could be useful. However, from a real-world perspective, I really hope it never happens. Why? Because then we will have people shooting direct to ProRes and treating that as their primary footage, going all the way through post with it, never touching the RAW. Believe me, we're going to be seeing enough of this with the H.264 module. I know that I'm going to get hired to edit and/or color a production shot on RED in the near future where they're going to hand me a ton of H.264 files only to learn that they never bothered to record (or save, if they did) the RAW files.

RED already has a ProRes module for Epic and it is just under $4K...

 Peter

 Yeah, sure, that's one way... If RED does offer a ProRes module, it better record 4K ProRes 4444, or I won't be interested. Seriously, I doubt I would buy a ProRes module, I really don't see the need for most of my current workflows... Except for the times when I one-light and transcode to 4K ProRes 4x4, but I have the Rocket, and it gives me a chance to review and tweak before jumping into the edit.

What's the weight difference?

If I remember correctly the Alexa as shown without lens was around 17 pounds. (Arri for some reason leaves that off their very detailed spec sheet on their website ;) .

The Epic, with Bomb EVF and side handle and side CF module weighs in at 6 pounds on the nose.

But on Alexa...look at all those buttons. Must...push...

ha ha if buttons are that thing that gives you wet dreams, then you will be happy to know that there are 2x as many buttons on the Epic with Side handle than on the Alexa :) Then throw on a Redmote, and you probably wont be able to control yourself.

The Alexa seems more of the Red One form factor. I have to say, I am still amazed at the size of the Epic given the capability. Excellent job!

Where does one mount preston and other devices without blocking the interface panel on Alexa?

EPIC monitor path - HD-SDI

EPIC monitor path - HD-SDI

Following up on the HD-SDI monitor output discussion:

EPIC brains allows the HD-SDI, Viewfinder and HDMI outputs to operate at independent resolutions, frame rates and gamma.

EPIC offers REDcolor or REDlog gamma at 720p, 1080p or 2K, with LOOK AROUND and graphics, or as a clean PROGRAM feed.

Details:

EPIC supports 1.5GHz HD-SDI (as used on RED ONE), plus 3GHz HD-SDI. The latter replaces "dual link" with a single BNC cable.

1.5GHz mode allows 1280 x 720p 4:2:2 at 50 or 60 fps, or 1920 x 1080p 4:2:2 at 24, 25 or 30 fps, both in record and playback.

3GHz mode adds 1920 x 1080p 4:4:4 (RGB) at 24, 25 or 30 fps and 1920 x 1080p 4:2:2 at 50 or 60 fps, both in record and playback.

EPIC can also support 2048 x 1080p 4:4:4 (RGB) at 24 or 25 fps, and 2048 x 1080p 4:2:2 at 50 or 60 fps, but as yet there may be little you can connect to.

so frame guides will be visible on external monitors while an EVF and LCD is attached?
and what about playback? will we have frame guides on playback?

Wow! Very nice.

And what about playback? will we have frame guides on playback?

If you want them yes, but you don't have to have them if you want a clean feed instead.

The nice thing it's your choice, EPIC supports a minimum of three independent monitoring paths.

In my post above I said "REDspace or REDlog", however I should have said "REDcolor or REDlog"

I know Alexa and Epic provide comparable exposure benefits, but Epic's resolution and its advanced form factor will have to be addressed by Arri in developing Alexa 2.0. This picture really underscores those differences. 2K is too few K for Alexa 2.0.

Jim has mentioned that he questions the aggressive targets he's set for Epic development, but they really pay off. I'm sure Arri and others would prefer to set the pace of development, but that window closed on them. If Alexa had more resolution, I could see Epic and Alexa co-existing in the market for a time, but the differences in resolution pretty much dictate that one of the cameras has to change to achieve true parity.

While Alexa may enjoy a slight advantage in DR, it really isn't enough of an edge to tilt the market towards maintaining 2K acquisition as a desirable standard. Technology never allows itself to be dumbed down like that.

I wonder how fast an Arri 4K+ option will arrive, and can they do it without undermining the reasons to buy the current Alexa. Going fast will get them a better pole position in the market, but it will also potentially dilute Alexa's sales. I'd be pissed as a producer if I were swayed to shoot Alexa for my season 1 series and then told season 2 really should be shot with an Alexa 4K camera. Seinfeld's post network success is really the big argument to go big in resolution. 4K display in the home is coming faster than anyone can imagine.

I hope you ment "REDcolor or REDfilm" Or any other name you chose for the new developed log curve yet to be released.

Thanks.

and you probably wont be able to control yourself.

I can`t now..That`s a crazy amazing picture! A significant picture..Somehow it captures it all..worth at least a thousand words, all the gripes, the snipes and the this and that`s that get thrown around here now and again..it all falls away..just falls away..how can it not?

`Kin Ace..Jim and Jarred and all the REd team..amazing achievement. It seems almost a bit silly to say `well done` but Well done.Incredible.

VERY excited about being able to view REDlog on the output. That'll be wonderful to judge exposure with on a waveform monitor. There are times when checking exposure at the camera or rig is not an option.

That's the sort of feature that would be great to add to the "view RAW" functionality on the RED ONE. "VIEW REDlog".
