The Alexa is a great camera... that's what I have been saying since I 1st saw it at IBC last year.

I used to be a huge fan of ARRI. I still adore some of their products. But when it comes to digital cinema cameras I honestly feel disappointed. Not because Alexa is bad. Not at all. Alexa is a fantastic product and true achievement from ARRI. It is the way their PR is trying so hard to compare it to RED at the cost of spreading FUD (and borderline misleading information). This is what hurts me the most. If they purely focused on what Alexa is and its features (without trying to trash the "competition" with FUD) and the key purpose, people will see it for what it is. I can see Alexa being preferred camera for TV series and even broadcast and other HDTV content. When it comes to theatrical features - sure You can shoot it on Alexa, but ARRI has posted themselves study (by their own R&D department) highlighting why 4K+ is the future. You can be sure there will be 4K+ camera coming from ARRI as soon as they can make it work (maybe even next year). I have always had nothing but respect for ARRI and I know most of the key people in Munich by first name, having met them personally. But the current PR surrounding Alexa is destroying their reputation and diluting my trust in the truthful and honest info they always used to provide...

Just my sincere opinion...

Peter

Since ARRI has RED ONE MX camera (or at the very least access to one), I would have expected them to post this themselves. I would simply sack the head of ARRI PR and try to repair their image (pardon the pun) before it is too late...

what should i say?
arri has a little mor DR, ok.
but i can OWN an epic instead of only renting the alexa.
i can shoot whenever i want.

Agreed

I can't see more DR from alexa with this test. Do you?.

Saludos,

Jose.

Additional note... 5K (5120x2560) is approximately 6.5 time the resolution of 1080P. If you take measured resolution of 4K vs. 1.65K, it is approximately 5.5 times the resolution.

Jim

Why do we need to compare? Where is the scope for comparison? EPIC resolution can not be compared with any existing camera right now. When Arri can not match EPIC in resolution and price I think we don't need this comparison test at all.

"Advantage" depends on priorities.

Agreed. The bottommost white band on the Epic looks particularly noisy, with a strange chunky magenta pattern on my LCD.

I like this noise!. I can fix it very easy. But the noise pixel from alexa are so big and dificult to fix. Its like a noise with a lot of compression.

How much stops has this test chart?. How much stops has epic more than redone MX?, same sensor, same DR?.

It is likely your monitor isn't calibrated properly. The Alexa has a clear, albeit slight, advantage.

It's so great we now have digital cinema cameras with great DR. Very exciting times. Kudos to Arri and Red on pushing envelope.

I always try to not sound like a fanboy on Reduser. Gotta say, though, I think Jim should feel thrilled. Jim and co - you should be toasting yourselves.

Maybe - MAYBE there is a DR advantage to Alexa, slightly. The difference could hardly be more than half a stop.
And I agree that the noise on the Epic looks much less chunky, so in the real world Epic may be more usable dynamic range.

Congratulations... Good times!

Have you done it? On both cameras? It's all hearsay and assumptions based on slippy ground.

I like Jim's humble manner towards Arri's new camera. Alexa is a great camera, so is the RedOne MX and Epic will be a great successor. Why don't people here accept that others can manufacture nice digital film cameras as well? Bashing others does not make yourself better, on the contrary.

Both cameras have their merits and downsides, which are very subjective - so is filmmaking. Great to have the choice. We have that with film stock, we are going to have it with sensors. BTW, I love my RedOne, I love my Arri SR. Great that Arri is back, thanks to Jim Jannard and the Red team challenging this is old, trusty horse.

Thanks for posting the comparison charts - much appreciated!

Hans

Really, the great shocker here is the ~1.6K resolution of Alexa. I would like to see an official chart from ARRI, given the fact that their sensor is actually 3K downscaled to HD. And NO - I am not questioning Jim's test at all. I just want to give ARRI the benefit of doubt and the opportunity to elaborate, if indeed this is the Alexa's resolution...

Peter

Interestingly, the $999 Panasonic TM700 resolves to around 950 lw/ph horizontal. That is about 1.7K. The $6k EX1 close to 1000 lines. Something doesn't sound right about Alexa resolving to only 1.6K from a 3.5K sensor and a 2.88K RAW stream. I am with you there, Peter. Arri has some explaining to do.

I've read a lot of posts on Reduser today - hundreds - and I didn't read a single one actually bashing the Alexa.

Jose knows what he's talking about. If you don't, don't assume that he's assuming.

No one doubts that both are great cameras. This is nitpicking. ;)
