  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks for having me! Was great to see you guys. And an RC chopper flying the epic. And your amazing gear. Seriously, what you guys are doing is brilliant - everybody who isn't a customer is missing out!

I really dig how their stuff is keeping the size of the EPIC down while providing a lot (!) of flexibility and easy-to-access connectors. There's those nice little touches like the focus hook on the riser, and it all looks very cool and slick. Of course, it's all top notch quality, even the pre-production models are as rugged as you'd ever want them to be. At first, I was a bit skeptical about the shoulder mount, but I have to say - it's great. The ability to tilt it to fit your shoulder is wonderful, and what I like most is how small you can stay with your setup. And you can mount it to the camera in a lot of different ways.

Paul - it's not really my place to talk about what's coming next, but I think the picture says it all - they are experimenting, and knowing how they think (a bit), I doubt they won't be offering an EVF mounting solution in the future. The setup I was using was really simple and worked great - no looking up, x-y-z adjustable - I'd keep my eyes on this thread...
 
What is the EVF mount that Tobias is using? It looks like the ONLY viable evf mount for shoulder mounted work I have seen to date. All the others have the operator looking awkardly upwards into the viewfinder. Surely someone outthere who can design a decent mount for the bomb evf.

Yep this one looks the goods, but...
A Red Nato rail (100mm) can be secured to the "rod and foot" of an ET mount via two 1/4" bolts. the 19mm rod/foot can be purchased separately from Element Technica.
The Nato rail can then be swung around and down, getting you down to a decent height with a Spinner that's attached to the Nato rail.
Sorry to hijack someone's product thread...
 
The PL mount has a larger toothed outer ring, if it's not a 3rd party mount you guys are testing. Also whats up with that lens? Is that a re-housing or a case to add rings to a still lens?

OK everybody. First of all we wanted to show the shoulder mount on these pictures - nothing else. The VF mont you see is a setup we like to use personally. Its actually nothing else then two RaidRacks, our 19mm bracket and two short 19mm (carbon) rods ... It's actually working very good. Stable, narrow, flexible. But its not a finalized product. If anyone is interested in it I can make some closeups and post a price ... it will however not be a official product at the moment.
The Lens is a rehoused Leica R zoom (35-70 / 2.8 APO - very rare lens) the mount is actually a adapter to make it fit proper. Both, lens and adapter will not be any upcoming products. They are our private gear :-).

EVF mount is the only part I wish me back to film cameras like the good old Aaton. It seems very difficult to find a solution which can be EASELY and FAST adjusted just on the fly and fits in the exact right position in front of your eye and don't weights pounds.
 
I am working on an adapted Alexa EVF mountholder, in my opinion the only solid but very lightweight solution, i have someone adapt the Alexa shoe mount to fit the BOMB EVF. Will post pisc when it is finished.
 
Do you plan on being at IBC? I don't see your name on the Exhibitor's list...
 
He may be smiling, but the rig set up looks very uncomfortable. In fact, I have yet to see an Epic shoulder set up where the operator looks comfortable on any shoulder mounted rig. Holding the support, finger in an awkward position to turn on the camera, Bomb or screen too high, poor weight distribution. Red should give an award for the most ergonomically designed confortable set up based on Red or third party accessories. I'd love to be able to buy now in anticipation of my Epic delivery, but I don't see a single product that works. The below the rod set-ups come close, but weight forward and button management is still an issue. And with below the rod setups, you can't use the modules. Please prove me wrong. Show me what works well.

This photo was really only or fun and to show that you can also use it this way. Worked better then it looks like on the photo. Personally I would always use two handles. Our shoulder mount is (I think I can say this) to most flexible one on the market. If you can't fit ours to how you would like it I think you will have a hard time to find one that will. You can basically place the pac where ever you want (under, behind, top of the camera) you can tilt the pad as you want it and its ultra light. The grips are based on 19mm standard - so if you don't like ours - you can use any on the market. The System is also based on standard Arri style Bridgeplates - this means if you want quick release - you can use REDs bridge plate. Its up to you how you configure it.

Trust me, it wasn't uncomfortable - in fact, it felt really good! Very comfortable, very balanced. Not having the second handle was an experiment, but a really successful one. And you know, I usually smile whenever I like something... :)

this setup wouldn`t work for a whole day of shooting, but for a quick photograph it might feel ok...
 
I wasn't trying to trash Action Products, just exploring if there is any system out there made by anyone, including Red, that is comfortable. I'm not buying a $50,000+ system for a "quick photograph." I can't see anyone lasting more than 20 minutes holding a set up like this.
