  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

I skipped a bunch of this thread. Impressive, first of all, that is hell of a range. That said, .....How big is that sensor? :)

Boy do we live in some exciting times. I'm so happy to be along for the ride.

I'm not quite sure if everyone fully understands what this actually means. This is the 1st time in history that a digital sensor blows away the dynamic range of film... and at a resolution that rivals 65mm. Couple that with 80+ fps at full resolution. Of course you can shoot lower resolution at higher frame rates. Record to a small SSD. REDCODE. Dragon. RED.

Jim

I'm not sure where the 21 stops came from but clearly we see a usable 18+ stops of dynamic range. Maybe more given some tweaking. In any event, it is more than any film stock we have ever seen and certainly more than any digital sensor known to man. This is meaningful. :-)

Jim

I would like to take a minute to really digest what this means. Think about it. This is a milestone in CINEMA HISTORY. I'm serious. This means that no camera...till now...has ever had this level of dynamic range. This is a new frontier we have crossed. Like landing on Mars. Unfortunately, and I say this with a bit of sadness and reverence, this means that film is effectively dead. Or if not dead, then we are certainly watching it's life force wane and flicker.

This is a historic day. I feel significant just adding my 2cents to this noteworthy thread.

6K also means that 5K is the new gold standard for future proof delivery (assuming 6k debayers perfect 5K; Monochrome gave us a peek of what that looks like). Dragon will also be oversampling from 6K the sharpest 4K masters in the industry.

But it's the Dynamic Range that's really giving me goose pimples. We'll be able to light and compose shots now that will be as revolutionary as what Orson Welles did with Citizen Kane. Think about it. Imagine a noir shot, with a figure in dark silhouette in the foreground, shrouded in the shadows but still very visible...it's a closeup...a gangster looking down averting his gaze so as not to be recognized...and then in the background we see an open door...and outside is Los Angeles...blazing hot in the noon day soon...except nothing is clipping...all the clouds are billowing and churning with contrasty detail...A white figure approaches at the door, a copper dressed in a cream suite...and we zoom in on his face, without an iris pull, and still nothing is clipping and his face glows with a luminosity that defies logic. All in-camera, all in one shot, with no gimmicks or magic. That's what 18+ conservatives stops gives you. New shots we never dreamed were possible.

The first 10 features shot on Dragon are all going to do the "tunnel" trick on on way or another where the cast moves in and out of dark shadows and bright pools of light with nothing clipping, everything looking amazing, and no noise what's so ever.

Hear Dragon roar. Hear the rest of the cinema world tremble.

Happy New Year all.

I'm fucking stoked.

It means Django II will be shot on a RED

I would def love to know the extra funds needed for a Scarlet trade in for the Epic, ...without the Epic dragon upgrade, just the Epic?

unfortunately I dont think I will be able to afford a scarlet trade in for epic, let alone the epic with the new dragon upgrade

Got an awesome idea...

Scarlet trade in for Epic but we get to pay the remaining fee for the epic on finance? ;)

worth a shot

Hope everyone had a great new years, here is to a great 2013

Dragon is unbelievable!

Doing backflips right now! The trade in program for Scarlet owners is the best New Year gift for me!

But, seriously, Jarred, please form the queue based on the DATE AND TIME OF ORDER and NOT on the SERIAL NUMBERS of cameras, this way people like me, who were fighting with the crashing site on release day to make an order and succeeded at that, but ordered a Ti Canon package won't have to wait for so long. After all they are the most dedicated customers, the ones who tuned in to the announcement and made a decision to get this fantastic product right away without wasting a second. I ordered immediately after the announcement, but got the camera 5 months lated due to Ti Canon mount shortage with a serial number over 1000. I'm not complaining or mad, I'm grateful to you guys for the miracles you create, I just don't want to experience the same situation twice and I think there are a lot of people who were in the same boat with me who will agree.

And most of all — HAPPY NEW YEAR Jim, Jarred, and everyone at RED. This was a remarkable year for you and for us, your customers. I'm 100% sure that the next one will be 10x times better. Keep the revolution burning and let others bite the dust!

YEahhhhhhhhh...
Happy New Year:)))

RED TEAM thanks and Thanks again ....
2013 is a Dragon Year .

RED PASSION

obsolescence obsolete is alive and well.

Happy New Year everyone... just a bit of an update on Dragon.

There are some people that think RED has been standing still.. Quite the contrary. We just have been a bit quiet with our hands full harnessing the fire-breathing power of the Dragon.

Dragon was born from a brand new pixel design, with a new fab process and a new read out architecture that has resulted in a sensor that is cleaner and that has more dynamic range than anyone expected.

One of our most reserved sensor engineers wrote Jim and I this morning after shooting a test and these were his words:

" First time in ten years that I'm speechless "

Getting Dragon done was one of the most difficult things we have ever done... but it has turned out to be much more than we could of ever imagined.

This much range coming off of a sensor has never been done before.. let alone at over 6k at 80 frames a second.. so we had to beef up the entire infrastructure of EPIC.

This is likely to affect the price of the upgrade a bit.. and its going to close the door on any chance of a Scarlet to be able to upgrade to Dragon.

We are however.. going to be offering a trade-in program much like we did with the R1 for Scarlet customers to get into an Epic Dragon.

So on the last day of the year of the Dragon, I am going to share with you a frame that was taken this morning.

Don't look at image quality here... this is a dirty debayer with no black calibration, no offset correction and no processing on a special 21 stop DR Chart from DSC.

This is from a prototype " Frankie " Epic camera with a really, really expensive engineering lens that really, really sucks at taking pretty pictures, on a non-sealed lens mount ( hence the light bloom ) but it gives you a bit of an idea on just how powerful all your cameras are about to become.

"Real" Images coming soon... ( but not tonight )

Thisone is the one to ponder!
And apprechiate!

And Jim/reds newfound policiy of talking about "useable" stops, and not neccesarily all the stops that can be detected on a stoupfer chart.

This give reason for peace and arrogance and a happy new year for RED!

Sony is releasing what in february, you said?

If this is somehow deliverable by NAB... :-)

Cheers
Have a cigar!

Amazing!!!

Absolutely fantastic!!!

My sort of shamanism with drinking Dragon (Pop Pommery) champagne at New Years Eve helped and actually made sense.

For example I owe Nikon D800 that has at DxOMark Sensor Score 14.4 Evs of DR

but 18+ usable stops of DR with Dragon on Epic will make a really huge difference!!!!

Please add Hot Mirror to IR OLPF if possible Jim!

Happy New year! You guys love doing this kind of thing, I can see :)

First, mind blown. No other words for it. Its officially SUPERIOR to film. We are really in a new era of Cinema!

Questions:

Any new accessories coming with the Dragon? Any new power needs, for example? I love the redvolts and compact design of the Epic...

How are we going to monitor these 6K images on our 5" Red Pro LCDs! :)

There's 80fps in 6K... How about in "yesterday's news but still amazing" 5K?

Lastly, and this is the most scary part for me:

You guys talk about a price increase on the upgrade... There are different types of Epic purchasing prices out there throughout the times of availability ... I hope you guys have us in mind with this, the ones that paid more, for example, because as much as a good deal this is, its still going to hurt and, well, even if "everything changes", our wallets "changed A LOT" during these hard times! (I'm sure not for all, though. )

Happy New Year Jim, Jarred, Graeme and all at the Red Team! Keep pushing forward!

Wow

Whatever said and done, Red MX Sensor changed the dynamics of shooting in feature film industry in India. Now more than 60 to 70% of entire industry in down south especially Tamil feature films are shot in either Epic/Alexa/SonyF65/Scarlet/RedONE MX/Red ONE.

Hope the real revolution is this and hope to see the remaining percentage of people who still believe digital not equal to film with Dragon update.

Hats off Red Team!!!

Same here although it's not for 'skew' when panning fast, I couldn't care much about that and think it's pretty much negligible at this point with the normal Epic. To me it's more about the split screen strobe artefact when a camera flashes its flash, or cop sirens, etc. Really wish that would be gotten rid of or reduced to a large extent if possible.

i.e. this where film still reigns supreme:

You guys are going to be thrilled...
