  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Peter - the more natural DR the better. The camera is the canvas, not the human eye. The human eye will make adjustments to the image independently anyway.

Also who's to say you have to use everything the camera records. Being able to is the real beauty. I still shoot HD, but I do understand the benefits of shooting at 4K or 5K or whatever K as a means of having the info to work down from IF necessary. DR is no different really. Gives you more play room.

If you want an image that's more like 10 stops or 12 stops or w/e based on what your shooting, then at least you can decide in a much wider range where that 10 or 12 stops can fall.

Amazing.

Jim, while you're at it changing the course of digital cinematography history, could you please extend your product portfolio to larger sensor single shot systems as well? Could you just possibly maybe churn out some 35mm sensors, even 645 sensors with your tech and then produce some cameras with that insane dynamic range please?

To me this looks to be years ahead of CaNikon/PhaseBlad technology. I would buy a 6k DSLR with your tech in a second.

I hate the dynamic range of my Leica M9.

Regards

P.

So will this mean the trade in for the Scarlet will be close to the 9700 I paid, or the 7950 it dropped down to?

After the long pause needed to process all of this mind blowing information, all I have left to say is hurry up!!! :) Hope the year of the Dragon was as happy as I imagine it must have been for you guys, and on to 2013 which is guaranteed to bear shocking gifts and change everything, again!

What about color rendition? Will we see film-like vibrancy with Dragon?

To me a lot of the "film like vibrancy" comes from the dynamic range because you have to remember that when something is near clipping the colors are washed out and going to all white. And the more dynamic range you have the more color in the image you're preserving. This is one of the reasons Alexa often has better color than Red cameras is because any part in the shoulder of the curve gets to keep its color more saturated and without starting to fade out due to limited DR. So I can only imagine with this crazy high DR, in some basic ways at least the apparent color of the Dragon will be better than ever.

Congratulations to the Red Team, and best wishes for a Epic New Year! Outstanding News to hear straight out of the gate for 2013!

Peter... sorry to disagree. Color depth has nothing to do with DR.

This announcement is a very important milestone in film history. I'm very happy and glad to be alive to see it. Congratulations.

This is amazing! Mind is completely blown. Not only do we get a camera that is far beyond anything we've ever scene before. We've gotten a path for our little Scarlets to flex some real muscle!

I'm glad I'm on RED's team :D
