  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Now that's how you ask a question!

Is Dragon roughly about 6 months away ? Also this

Dragon is under development and about 6 months from now as RED Ted said at CES 2013.

Have a listen and look about that news here (pay attention @ 2.51 minutes of the video)>>>

Thank you, Sanjin, for locating this video.
Ted did not specifically mention which sensor we will be hearing about in 6 months. He was speaking in the context of what would be shown on an 8K display.
Could he have been referencing the 645 sensor?
Although I seem to recall a third party mention that the 645 is now a dead issue.
Has anyone seen or heard an official statement from RED?

Given the sensor size and available ciné glass, Is there a new set of Dragon optimized lenses in the works?
Must be. Surely. Yes???/ ( :

God, I hope Ted's talking about the full frame "Studio" or vistavision sensor, at least. Though, with all the new ASICs and extensive testing...

As far as lenses go, Phil's "extrapolated" sensor dimensions seems like an odd duck sitting out in no man's land. No?

It might sell a lot of Canon lenses. ( :

If RED wants to provide cameras with future proof resolution then wouldn't you need 9K for a 8K finish?

If Scarlet never becomes Dragonized, I could see Epic-X replacing the Scarlet if we get Epic Dragon and an Epic FF/IMAX.

Personally I think Red could use a SuperDuperPro camera, yeah they have other models that majority shoot on due to cost like the Epic and Scarlet why not have an Ultra Premiun Camera that will compete with Panaivisons new DigiCamera that is currently in production.

S35 I feel is great for consumers due to lens options but when it comes to Movie making you need IMAX in todays world. No real need to make lens cause if there are a few of these cameras say they go to High-End Shooters/Directors most the gear will get prepped through Panavision which they have new lens being made to cover 70mm plus Duclos who has cinevised Medium Format still lens. There are a few options, I would imagine in the future it will be more common, I mean look how fast lens manufactures got off their ass to make new quality glass. It's amazing Zeiss, Arri, Fuji, Canon, Rokinon all have new Cine lens since 2010.

Either way I'm excited to see whats instore.

keep up the work red team.

worked with the C300 for the first time yesterday, made me realize how much I love Red and my camera. Everything else falls way short in every aspect Build, Design, Cost, Workflow, Codec, I can go on. You never realize what you have until its gone.

I don't see myself selling my camera anytime soon, there's nothing that can compare at the moment.

Come on Cid C300 so nice, shiny and plasticky! And it have convenient codec and resolution, from reputable vendor with excellent service and support! So you still not convinced yet? Me too, ha ha! Recently was on F55 presentation in Vancouver - was pretty nice, excellent catering btw, really nice and informative. But I felt like I'm back in time somewhere in 2007 or so. I've being told that soon in the near future HD content will be obsolete - this is why SONY FINALLY INVENTED FUTURE CAMERA WITH BETTER RESOLUTION - outstanding. And camera in 4K and NO high speed (technically F55 with top configuration can only be comparable to Scarlet) the configuration close to EPIC I already have goes to $65.000 - so it is already obsolete before release.

Too true I mean if your shooting a Doc C300 is perfect if your shooting Weddings C100 is perfect. RED on the other hand for those two genres, your gonna have to put more work in due to battery life, media life so yes an assistant is key no way if you go Dolo. If we saw a Scarlet Mini come out like the new KineFinity Mini then maybe it can compete with this market. I'd love to have a Red thats DSLR size, shoots out the box and has the media/battery benefits that Canon has. 1DC looks cool but not for the money I could see a new line of DSLR coming out with 4K in a few years but it's still 8-Bit 422 4K. If the job requires a 1D C due to form factor I'll shoot on it if I have to.

Yeah Shane Hurlbut is doing another series of hard core tests for a Need For Speed ad Produced by Spielberg. Apparently he got an F5 but no 4K Recorder, he asked Sony if he could get one but they're not available. F5/F55 is a stop gap measure until they can get 4K Built-In. HighSpeed is just to get everyone on-board who doesn't have it.

it's some weird stuff Dmitry, Red has been on average a good 2-3 years ahead from the competition. I hope it stays that way while their camera line expands through out time.

Not an odd duck at all.

I actually think the sensor size of Dragon is rather clever. I'll have to do a write up down the line about this. Consider the potential format sizes of 6K, 6K HD, and 6K WS (which we don't have official info on just yet). For 5K/S35 main capture format I think it's design spot on and exactly what many people (and productions) want. After today's lens tests I can say that a handsome amount of lenses cover the current 6K spec, but we should really hold off on what that exactly means. There's a difference between coverage and optimal performance. It's just too soon to tell.

Also, Red manufactures many mounts. This isn't just a Canon thing. You can use damn near any FF35 lens ever made (minus shorter flange wide angle Leica Ms) on Epic and Scarlet today and Dragon tomorrow. I use Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss glass all designed for FF35 on Epic and Scarlet today. As for S35 glass I strongly feel that it's going to be just fine. Some will cover 6K Dragon, all will cover 5K Dragon.

With what's happening in the world of UHD and 4K market penetration I'm feeling more confident that Dragon is going to be a workhorse... erm.... workdragon for many situations and lenses.

And lets remember that format and resolution is just one aspect of this upgrade. Better low light performance, cleaner images, new color science, IR OLPF, and rather unreal levels of captured dynamic range are all on the way.

Obviously any full frame will more than cover, but how many full frame lenses are made for cine work? Hence my tongue in cheek canon reference. "S35" glass might indeed cover,
but covering and maintaining the performance you pay for are two different things. We'll see. I'm not criticizing your perfectly logical "extrapolation" Phil, but I am a wee bit curious as to why that 6K sensor size.
Is there a chance that the Dragon sensor is the same size as Epic's? Or is it even larger than your graph indicates, moving things more deeply and effectively into the realm of FF glass usage?
Is red working on a lens that will be optimized for this? I believe I have read most of "Jarred's posts" but maybe I missed something that would fill in the blanks.
In answer to Pawel's query about Dragon's "sensor opening being enlarged" to accommodate a couple of Nikonos lenses, Jarred answers "…just the sensor mask will be larger.. as you assumed".
"Just" the sensor mask - hmm, I thinks to meself…. ( :
