Elysium - Shot on EPIC

Great Behind the scenes video posted.

Any camera operators who can speak to why the operators were holding on to the matte boxes instead of any type of a handheld rig? I can take a few guesses, but am wondering if anyone can speak definitively to that. Thanks!

Common practice, it lets your really grab a hold of the camera especially during filming sequences where you're really torquing the camera around. A good mattebox allows you to do this.

Just got back from seeing it.
I like it but some of it was hard to tell if it was meant to be out of focus.

Watched it at cinemark egyptian 24 Arundel Mills in the XD theater.
The projectionist at this theater told me they got 4K DCP and 2k.
At this theater the projectionist name is Jarred. Thats easy to remember.

It's shaky as hell and they used a mixture of DSLRs and Epics -- very noticeable. But when the camera is steady and we're looking at the Epic image, ELYSIUM is pure eye candy. Gorgeous and sharp.

I just saw a 4k projection of Elysium and I have to say - it's the best looking red footage I've ever seen. It looked absolutely beautiful - the skin tones, the resolution, the look of Earth and the space station, the movement, everything about it was incredible. The film itself was spectacular - a great sci-fi movie. I think this film is the pinnacle of digital cinematography. It crushes the Alexa - not like there is a fight between them but after seeing the Avengers, Amour, and Drive last year - I think the Red Epic especially with the dragon upgrade is the premier digital camera to use.
With that said, I've also seen the Red look terrible in the theatre. Hitchcock and every Soderbergh Red movies don't look good at all to me - in terms of skintones, movement, overall color, handling of tungsten lighting - so of course - just as I will continue with the basketball metaphor - it's not the shoes, it's the player. Also it may be the theatre - digital projectors are just at the beginning - they aren't there yet.

Seeing Elysium at a Sony 4k Projector really makes me an ardent believer that things in the movie theatre are going to be okay after the transition from celluloid to digital continues. acquisition on film and projection on film are dead - if newer DPs, colorists, motion FX, are trained in how to get the most out of digital footage - there is hope.

We just are at a crossroads of how movies are shot and shown. But now I have hope. So thank you Elysium and the Red team - you made a grumpy person a little less grumpy about where the film world is going.

I think the crisp sharpness of digital really work for space visuals. The exterior space shots look as good as any I've seen. The story itself didn't do much for me, but the movie was enjoyable.

I loved the story. I love Matt Damon's performance. It was all logical- it moved so seamlessly and I love the pacing. The ending was a tad bit sappy but it was a heck of a rollercoaster. I also love how Neill Blomkamp does sci-fi all handheld - it makes it so organic and feel real.

So, is it a fact the VFX were all done at 4K, thus enabling true 4K projection? I remember having read somewhere the VFX were all done at 2K, as has been the case for most other movies, including ones with budgets many times over that of Elysium...

Yea it was a lot of shaking but then I did see as being bad if thats what they intended it to look like.
Im so use to smooth most things. Seeing this gives me the realization that not every thing needs a dolly or smoothing out, if the look your looking of the shot is organic.

Saw it in imax last night and was extremely surprised by the amount of people in there! Just under 18. I wonder if the imax pricing have anything to do with this.

visually 10/10 :) really liked whole cinematography...
but plot wtf is that??? most stupid and racist scenario i have ever seen..
people in elysium speaks french (wow how cool) and people left in earth whole hispanics speaks spanish also %90 them sick and crimanal

Yeah they are making a statement about racism... Maybe even more than one. What observations about race were they making?

Maybe the elite in the story choose to speak French for their own reasons. Maybe they speak French because they feel superior and identify French culture as superior. Maybe in their world all of the finer things in life are French, so they have adopted it as their own... Superiority by association.

It is the elite in the story who are racist. They choose to shit upon the Spanish speaking people and so are responsible for their oppression. Does the film glamorize or condemn this?

Edit: The villain was German. What does that mean, anything?

Review

A desolate third world wasteland. A gated, auspicious, white people paradise. Slave sweatshop. Tea and martinis. Not all that implausible, but Elysium represents the ultimate gated community, while the third world has become the entire earth.

This fundamental class distinction leads to inevitable class conflict in Neil Blomkamp’s follow up to District 9, a similarly weighty sci-fi film. Both films take on issues of global significance, particularly immigration, apartheid and capitalist exploitation of the underclass. Blomkamp strikes a blow for the rest of humanity, and Elysium is a very good film, bordering on greatness. For an action sci-fi thriller, it delivers the battles, the archetypes and the desperation of the world. I heartily recommend seeing it.

It wasn't mindless - the has entered your subconscious and millions of other's subconsciousness to raise some serious issues about classism and privilege. He shot "Earth" in Mexico City and I believe California for Elysium. This is a serious political problem addressed in what I believe to be a more effective manner than Christopher Nolan did in the third Dark Knight movie. Well Nolan is more pro-1percent than Neil. Also one of the bad guys wasn't German as I think someone said, but South African.
