  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm getting ready to start my first RED edit and am trying to find the right workflow. I will be onlining elsewhere. Here is the workflow that I would like to use:

- Edit using proxy _m files
- Output EDL for onlining with .R3D files

Will this work? Will an EDL generated from proxy files match the raw files?

Thanks in advance!

Should work well as long as you are OK with not accurate colors from QT proxys (and editing with all your R3Ds files available on the edit station since they are needed by the proxy files if you do not generate any offline independant files)

once the edit is done if you plan to use REDCINE-X to conform and grade or generate QTs, DPXs you can use Clipfinder or give my small applescripts a try.

It should relink your EDL (or XML) to the R3Ds and send each clip with handles to REDCINE-X.

you can check and try my EDL2RCX and XML2RCX scripts using the links below (in my signature) or get clipfinder here : http://www.daun.ch/hamingja/

Definitely ok with not so accurate colors. We're going out of house for a color grade. I'll check with the house for sure obviously, but if I just give them my hard drive with the .R3D files on it and my EDL, I should be all good right?

i honestly wouldn't work with proxies cause they're instable references linking to the original .r3d = raw = redcode = "red's sauce".

that might not be a problem at first, but because only a red cam is able to produce redcode you'll end up rendering (transcoding to a different codec in the back) a lot especially with multiple tracks / split screens'n stuff / effects.

transcode them first, use clipfinder, use all your processor cores and don't rename anything, it'll be a blessing during the conforming.

in a nutshell: invest some time in the beginning for transcoding, save a lot more while you enjoy a steady and smooth editing workflow.

but i am just thinking aloud.

I'll be editing with FCP7. I'm thinking I'll just use the Log and Transfer tool to transcode to Prores 422 (HQ). Can I send those to the color grade or should I let them work off of my .R3Ds? These are commercials to be output in HD and SD.

It depends. You can re-conform (with Clipfinder, for example) to your R3D's to have full access to your original DR and colors. Or you can do a first-light during import into ProRes (with some limitations in L&T, no curves for example) and still have 10 bit for grading with ProRes.
If you go that second route, I'd rather do the transcoding with Clipfinder too, since it supports the new color science and is much faster on multi-cores than L&T.
