Sorry guys this is a bit bone-headed, but I have actually looked EVERYwhere and getting no joy.
As photo shows, I have an accessory RED Epic base-plate (maker unknown, bought used) that I am trying to add a Sachtler release plate to the bottom of. So as you can see, the mount screws are w-a-a-a-y too short to go thru BOTH plates and into the Scarlet Chassis.

The Q:
Does anyone know where longer versions of these screws can be found?? Would seem an obvious problem with equally obv solution, but: Google/ebay/various RED accessory makers...
no joy.

Hardware store option is a challenge because the head has to be both flat and VERY thin in height to fit in shallow cut out in Sachtler plate.

Thanks in advance-

Most photography stores will sell them. At least here in CA among the biggies like Filmtools, Samy's, etc... Not sure if screws come that long though.

Standard tie down screws like this are pretty easy to find around town. Specialty long ones are harder.

Generally any captive screws need to be made custom... there don't seem to be many standard sizes out there.

Your bottom plate appears to be the original Element Technica spacer.

Element Technica sell the longer tie down screws for this reason.

thank you gents! will check with ET then

Hi Amber - checked your link but that doesn't seem to address MY screw issue - unless I am not seeing it right? No tripod-mount extension screws shown.

thanks tho

Stu, I'm not sure by your picture that you are thinking about it the right way. You need to attach the base plate to the camera (where you have your quick release) first, then attach your quick release plate to the bottom of your base plate, with 2 separate mounting bolts. Essentially, you don't have to go through both plates with one mounting bolt. That way works for me any way, I have same set up.

I am assuming you are using 15mm lwt rod system. If you are using 15mm studio, I may be off. Still, you should be able to attache the base plate to the camera, then the quick release to the base plate

right, I can't believe I missed that from the pics haha. Once you said that I slapped my head! You are so correct hahaha

correct - 15mm LW rods.

here is set of pix.
You are right of course, I HAVE to attach the Sachtler release plate to the _base_ plate. But no matter how I align it, I can
-1) only get ONE bolt to mount the Sachtler to the Base plate, because as #2 pic shows, the 1/4" hole in the Base has no THREAD, so
-2) to get a second mount point I need a 1/4" screw long enough to go THRU the unthreaded Base plate into the Chassis - which doesn't seem to exist...
Nothing seems to line up to do otherwise.

OR.
quit banging my head against the wall and just go with one stinkin' screw holding it on. oy!

REALLY appreciate you guys expending the neurons trying to assist!

Looks like a pretty poorly made piece, IMO. You'd save yourself a lot of headache with a viewfactor or wooden camera plate.

My best advice.
Look in the yellow pages and find a metal workshop near by.
Those problems that we have around the cameras is usually very easily solved by somebody that has the right tools/machines.

We got a guy here in stockholm that normally makes molds for plastic fabrications. So he bangs stuff out of aluminum blocks in his oversized garage at home Where he got everything from mills, proper drilling gears to CNC machines. While we wait, watch and learn he can do everything from custom screws to PL mounts for a few bucks.

Normally it's a quicker and more precise operation than trying to order stuff through the web or such. And you learn fabrication in the process and have a lot of custom gear.

In your case I would say all you need is two holes one on each side on the quick plate.... Or you tell somebody to make you a brand new bottom plate that does both, hold the rods and click release in your tripod.

Think you are right Bjorn-
just will have to bite the bullet and get a machinist involved. Happily, in interior Alaska with all the gold mining, there are machinists for just about anything!

Trev - its actually a nicely-made plate tho lacking multiple mount options in favor (??) of keeping it light I guess. And it has the interface with the 15mm rod attachment (like they all do).

Again - my thanks to all.

What is wrong with getting a 1/4-20 tap and threading the unthreaded hole? Then you could use both a 3/8" screw and a 1/4" screw to hold your Sachtler plate in place
