would anyone know the effective focal length of the Duclos 11-16 when shooting at 5k and 4k?

I haven't found one negative review of this lens anywhere, but it would be a shame to loose all that wide angle

capability when cropping, has anyone used it on there Epic or Scarlet yet??

Thanks

I believe it is a full frame FF35 lens rehoused; it would be useful to check out the Scarlet X charts in the Sticky section of the Scarlet Forum created by Phil Holland. There is a great chart system there with lens conversions which will greatly help you out.

I'm using the Tokina 11-16mm on the Epic (same lens). It covers the full frame.

It should cover full frame of the Epic sensor as the Epic sensor is smaller than Full Frame 35mm but I believe he was looking for the focal length of the lens. If I'm not mistaken, the Duclos is 11-16 on a FF35 sensor, so on a 5k sensor camera it would as follows:

14.3mm - 20.8mm at 5K ,
17.6mm - 25.6mm at 4K

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Here is the link to the awesome Scarlet X data sheet which has a lens conversion chart http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet/page15

The lens was designed for 1.6x and 1.5x bodies and by chance covers 1.3x sensors like 5k on the Epic and Scarlet X. 4k will not be a problem at all. On FF35 it is only usable without vignetting at 16mm. I'll be getting one at my door soon.

I believe it is a full frame FF35 lens rehoused...

Nope. It's a DX lens rehoused.

It covers the full sensor 5K image on Epic just fine.

As for FF35, it will cover at the 16 end (with just a slight vignette) but at the 11mm end it's not even close.

in its Canon/Nikon form, it might be the best value in glass out there right now. In it's Duclos form, it's better (for cine use) but more expensive.

Thanks for pointing that out. My bad on it not being a full frame 35 lens

Is it true: Tokina 11-16 @ $750, Dulcos mod of same lens at @ $3500 ?

Yes. You are paying for a much more cinema friendly housing, proper follow focus gearing, and declicking the aperture blades. They can also produce PL, EF, and F mounts.

I can certainly vouch for their work. They produce high quality cinema lens modifications.

thanks guys,
Its a Shame really :-< guess i'll have to wait for RED to bring out a 6k sensor to fully utilise that true wide range

So, then what does this mean shooting 5k FF on Epic??
at the full wide to zoom range: 11-16 it DOES NOT vignette? Again, using EPIC not DSLR. I ask this since sometimes you hear "covers just fine IF you zoom to 13 or 14"

John,
My understanding is the Tokina 11-16 does not vignette at all, even at 5K FF on the Mysterium X sensor. But on a FF35 sensor, which Epic does not have yet (unless that is what Dragon is - we can only hope).

So Epic users are currently safe to use the full range of the Tokina. But on an FF35 sensor, it will ONLY be useable at the 16mm focal length and not 11-15mm.

Discussions that refer to FF really need clarity about whether the FF refers to using the full frame of the current Mysterium X sensor or the more tradition use of FF35 (vs. S35)

thanks again Phil, i thought this was a FF lens, hence the 6k remark , DX Format isn't that much bigger than MX@ 4k (16.9) so i'm guessing i'll be able to use MOST of that

super wide range after all! probably translate to 12.5-17.5mm or something minimal like that i assume??

Works great on epic at every length, if youre even considering this lens, then just put your name down now. Think there is still a hefty wait.

You wont be anywhere near disappointed.

Tokina 11-16mm on EPIC with Canon Mount full 5K frame ( 5120x2700 ) full wide ( 11mm ) focus distance really has little effect.

I posted a set of images from the Tokina at 11-14mm here: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?67659-Nikon-17-55mm-Epic&p=887937&viewfull=1#post887937
You can judge for yourself if you feel it would be a problem for your work. I've never used an extreme wide angle lens that did not have some amount of vignetting (but then, i've never had the pleasure of using Leica super-wides). But I've never found the Tokina to be a problem when shooting anything that is not a blank wall. I kind of like the look that the soft vignette gives. But that's just me.

The Duclos 11-16 T2.8 is a great little ultra-wide zoom lens for the money. Great for getting wider than the traditional lens sets 18mm at the wide end. I use mine all the time!

Yes, now i recall your post....so in reality YES there IS VIGNETTING on this lens at the very wide end. Might not be visible, but it is there. I think when shooting scapes is where i might have seen this at one time as i own that lens as well and rarely can you notice any vignetting, but it is there when you put a critical eye to it.
Thanks for that post

....and still a great lens

Standard sensor sizes appear to be history so it's probably less confusing if you begin to think in angles of view rather than crop factors or converting focal lengths. On a Red Epic / Scarlet at 5k at 11mm in 16:9 it's got a 99.3 horizontal degree angle of view, which is pretty wide.

Duclos's cine mod is not expensive. There are very good reasons they've been back ordered since they began converting 11-16's.
