A lot gets lost in the hay and day to day chatter, but I feel compelled to make a post to touch on a few topics as things are looking to shape up in a variety of directions.
Jarred just dropped a tease for a 1st party RED PL Mount as well as the RED PL ND Mount that will be compatible with DSMC3 Raptor and Komodo bodies. These transmit /i data and that is a massive deal for areas where RED has been thriving in virtual production, VFX, features, and more technically demanding shoots. Very happy to see that.
If you've missed some recent firmware updates on REDCODE RAW, you have three "strengths" of encoding compression now.
- HQ
- MQ
- LQ
- ELQ
I've seen HQ, MQ, and LQ used as the main codec for productions over the last year. ELQ will give you the longest roll time for those who need that for concerts, events, etc. Or for those who just need to keep a very, very small data footprint. I recommend HQ and MQ for most professional shoots and LQ is fine as well really. But for VFX I'd stay in the HQ and MQ as much as possible if you can. I've both projected and ran 8K and 4K televisions with HQ, MQ, and LQ. Will try to ELQ next time I can.
Komodo received a very early build that features GIO Scope in this month. That's fantastic to get back into the ecosystem as I feel it's one of the better if not best tools for ensuring your sanity for a tricky exposure scenario. Particularly in highlights and shadows. Likely coming to Raptor in a couple months.
Also, Komodo got Gyro and Accelerometer data enabled with that last beta, which is big.
Raptor has been out over a year and Komodo slightly over two. Lots of new features have been added to the cameras if you aren't on top of your firmware updates. If you're live on a current production, I'd recommend wrapping before updating your firmware unless you are comfy with new things. Beta can be used on production work, but I recommend navigating with caution there.
Raptor XL launched as well as Raptor 8K S35 in limited Rhino edition. Raptor XL does in fact have a built in E-ND which is controllable via RED Control as well as dedicated buttons on the camera. 2-7 stop range with full, third, and quarter stop increments for now. Raptor XL can go to Clear via the mechanism electronically in the body, which is a nice bit of convenience. Also a note to update RED Control if you haven't already.
There's been chatter about the EVF solution on the horizon, but it's still out of sight.
Lots and lots of little stuff too. The RED/smallHD DSCM3 Touch got Page OS 5 a bit ago. Also on latest Raptor firmware the monitor is updated with the camera firmware.
A note about Raptor 8K S35. RED has gone with a very interesting pixel pitch that makes 8K, the full sensor, work very, very well with all S35 lenses that I can imagine. For those familiar working with Dragon, Helium, Komodo, and other S35+ formats this will alleviate going cropping down to a smaller resolution or exploring extraction based workflows.
Much like with DSMC and DSMC2 before, it appears DSMC3 is maturing via firmware and new accessories. I should underline there's lots of great 3rd party stuff out there too when it comes to battery plates, I/O, mounts, etc. But nice to see RED grabbing things by the horns again with some first party goodness.
If there's desire, I've done a host of tests with these cameras that I haven't exactly shared yet. i.e. I haven't made them super pretty for the web w/ graphics and all that. But you have seen everything from lower ISO to about 5000 published from me over the last year on VV.
Though most on the day to day need the fundamentals, the DSMC3 platform is very forward thinking towards modern filmmaking demands and trends. For those of us tapping into some of that, it's been pretty fascinating seeing where virtual and remote production can go from here. With /i and Gyro Data things get more interesting.
