  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why doens't it exist?

(sorry for the disappointment)

Would love to have a +1 style module that goes directly after the DSMC2 Brain, with integrated antenna and the option to screw an external antenna for longer range on the right side of the module. Passes through all pin features of a module, powered by the battery module, and leaves the HDSDI connector of the base expander untouched (splitter?).

It's surely the module that I need the most. A Teradek bolt 500 style. The camera body could go 1" longer without problem as batteries are getting smaller (Paglink e.g.)

Anyone?

Pat

PS: Put a Tentacle in it as bonus. ;-)

Did you see those freaking antennas?... The actual product doesn't exist... yet.

I assure you it exists, but the delay was due to a redesign after feedback from NAB and also going through approval with RED. It'll be worth the wait.

Attachment shows the latest design (hard to see). Antennas have moved to the far corners to make room for the top handle.

Wow nice design. What system will that be compatible with? 300, 500, 1000, 2000?

Great! Thanks for the infos!

Could we have an antenna free, like bolt 500, model ? ;-)

How do you handle heat generation? Did you integrate a heatsink?

1000 and 3000 models for sure (and likely first off the line). I've been told a 2000 model will most likely be coming that will be compatible with the Paralinx Tomahawk and Bolt 2000. The respective Sidekick RXs (Sidekick 2 for 1000 and 3000, Sidekick 1 for the 2000) will also be compatible.

The problem with antenna-less designs is that the back of the camera will block the RF signal. There is no elegant way to get around it at this point.

Heat dissipation is better than the normal units just because it has more surface area for cooling. The RF boards are the same.

But the Antenna part could be higher than the module (3cm) isn't it sufficient?
How do you acchieve more cooling surface in the "sandwich" module design?

Mike, while we have you here.

I know the Wireless Module is going through some design revisions.

This particular module will "take over" the HDMI output correct?

Will we be able to use the LCD and EVF while this unit is plugged in or?

I just asked engineering and they said they could do a 500 if we redesigned the PCB and added external antennas to it (cost would go up). There doesn't seem to be any appetite for an antenna-less version due to anticipated performance issues.

They also confirmed the final design should operate cooler than current systems, but I didn't get any specifics. It will still be warm though.

It will pass the HDMI video path through the device (you'll get an HDMI output on the module too). However, this does prevent the side pogo from being active. When I asked why this was the case, the guys here told me that it had to do with the way RED handles video channels internally (if you use side pogo, it disables HDMI out the back). To be honest, I don't know enough about RED camera internals to have a proper discussion about that.

Mark Pederson is probably the best person to ask!

Darn. Had a feeling. Might also be a good idea to create a "breather spacer" for a Bolt with electric pass through so people can slip it into the chain.

Or?! Perhaps, and I think this would be doable, have an SDI input on the DSMC2 Wireless Module so you can feed it SDI rather than HDMI. Maybe a toggle switch or smart switch. Then it's just a short cable and works "every way".

It would be a major bummer if the module only ran off the HDMI as the camera would be limited to one EVF or LCD. A SDI input would be vital for any sort of 'production setup"

a happy Bolt 2000 owner.

hmmm...one step forward, two back. This would be a deal breaker for most.
I don't know many people that use HDMI...but losing one of the monitor paths on camera is not a good idea. We must be able to use an EVF and LCD at the same time.

Like this ?

This says "cube" but there are bolt variants - and I would think this would work with a bolt or a Paralinx style Transmitter any day.

This!!!
I think, for this piece of gear to be useable, it cannot interfere with the 2 monitor paths. Better to have an SDI or HDMI input.

Hi Mike G

Without another Red style video output on the TX... (no need for pogo pin lemo is fine).. the product would be a no go for us too. Losing a VF or 7inch touch is too much a sacrifice for the convienance gain of a slightly easier TX... unless I am missing some other killer function... am I missing something?

What could bring me around...

additional HDSDI out with color functionality
Or
Massive weight saving over normal TX
Or
Ethernet port/ gig E

Preferably all the above and no loss Red monitoring...;-)

Thanks for taking the time to develope for the Red proprierity Ecco system... just a little worried it is not going to be as fruitful as we (inc teradeck) hoped.

Speaking about range I need 95% reliable link within 50m and 5% over 50m and up to 150m.

So a Bolt 500 with optional (retractable) antennas for longer range when needed would be a good option for me.

What are your common range needs?
