  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

...
PS: I wouldn‘t put everything on one horse like Hydrogen. It is too early for speculations. My two cents.

Hydrogen isn't just one horse... its a multi-headed Hydra!

Anyway, too late. That's my 12 Hydrogens worth. :)

I'd be shocked if at any point RED uses the same manufacturing facilities that pump out their camera sensors to start making Hydrogen ones.

You do understand I am talking about sensors for the 2D camera r3d module and the 3D dual sensor un-named models?

So I can pay $5,000 to go from Epic-W to DSMC2 Helium - Can I pay extra to go to DSMC2 Monstro?

It would be the $40k sensor upgrade, right? I think once you are DSMC2, the sensors are available individually. The sort of "transparency" Jarred mentioned, at least how I see it, is the sensor-less Brain costs about $14.5k, then the sensor options are Gemini for $5k, Helium for $10k, and Monstro for $40k. So when you add the "brain" + the sensor cost = the final brain price you see on the RED store ($19.5k for Gemini, $24.5k for Helium, $54.5k for Monstro)

This is not always true. The Scarlet-W and Raven went up in price. As well as the Sony FS7... Companies can do whatever they want (as displayed by this new direction).
Not the same.
I don’t know about FS7, but RED launched Raven and SW at an introductory price while announcing that it will go up later.
You can always go up after you launch a product. But once you decide to go down in price, it is hard to go up again.

Incorrect. The Alexa Mini price just went up May 1st. 3 years AFTER it's original release.
I know that someone will refer to this.

Well let me tell you that this price increase has nothing to do with internal cost structure or whatsoever. The EU went through some difficult past years with some crisis. So this price change only reflects the global financial market. We are talking about EUR 2K price change.

Take an example of RTmotion. They increased their prices by 20-30% beginning of 2017 after Brexit. Again, global financial market adjustments.

So, these situations are rather exeption than standard.

Yeah, you put 12 horses in an engine. But it is still the same car at the end, haha :-))

whats the deal with HDRX on the revamped DSMC2? if i can get hdrx on the helium 8k with usable frame rates in this mode that would sway me to request an upgrade.

I wonder if the Gemini sensor could be persuaded to send two streams at the same shutter angle/speed but at two ISOs to give HDRx v2.0. That would be very cool.

That's called dual gain as opposed to dual ISO that Gemini features...

Many thanks Brent for your fast feedback, i believe i missed something.
Perfect, wait for it even if actually we can get Gemini + helium 8k60fps for the price of the old weapon. Thats a really good deal.

What does this mean? I will purchase the SW to Gemini path, will there be some kind of change in the pricing?

I asked about the dollar to euro conversion rate, because it seems strange to me that the upgrade is approximately 20% more expensive here then in the states.
So even flying to the states and have it exchanged there would make it a better buy, or sending it in yourself to the us and maybe paying import taxes when it comes back

At current rates it is quite a bit more expensive in the UK the whole thing is closer to $6700 at todays rates. It would be awesome to adjust that a little but there's the cost of transporting boards across and maybe there are higher overheads in the UK as well which i assume are taken into account.

cheers

Yeah it is really strange that the prices are that much more expensive. Hope they will fix it. 12500$ to 12900€ sounds a little bit harsh to me.

This is actually incorrect -- the new DSMC2 internals (some are calling them Weapon internals) help get you roughly doubled framerates at 7k & 8k when compared with Epic-W Helium, but for everything below 7k the Epic-W Helium and DSMC2 Helium are identical in framerates. I believe you can achieve lower compression but the sensor will not refresh any faster at those lower resolutions.

As I have read the reason is that higher fps is limited by the sensor readout technology. Higher fps is my biggest dream for Red cameras in future system, and oh well variable ISO for 8k as well :)
