  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Unified Dragon-X

I feel like that ridiculous person who happily parks his new Scarlet in the drive only to look over the fence and see his neighbours new Gemini! :))

As a content Scarlet-W owner I couldn't immediately afford to move to Gemini due to cost.
So I have started saving but my only worry was 'time' - if that offer were ever to be closed.
With Dragon-X, a stepping stone has been provided, that not only improves my camera but also eliminates this concern.

It's brilliant, thank you!

This isn't marketing. You don't market things that don't make you money. And to be clear, there is no " official " upgrade path. It's a one week thing that is open to a very limited number of people. I am literally going against my own rule because I have met a few Raven owners over the last year that purchased the camera with absolutely no upgrade expectations but I have watched many of them shoot incredible things.. better things than they should be shooting just starting out, and I watch some of them get to that point when they run up against the wall being limited by their tool..mostly by the lens mount and format size.

Raven was supposed to be a drone camera and/or the lightest RED for run and gun, and it became much more to many people. So they actually legitimately needed more camera but also being in a financial situation, as most Raven owners are, that they could never afford the massive jump for some people to get into a Gemini or Helium or Monstro. And they can't go backward with anything else in that price point, even from another company, so they get stuck in this spot, even if it is more mental than reality, and that frustrates the shit out of me.

So yeah.. this one week window I am offering to Raven is 100% personal for me. Ask Brent, I had to fight for it. Its not a business ploy to sell cameras. It's me being frustrated that we have a group of customers that are quite purely, stuck.

And I am shocked how good some of the stuff is that people are shooting with Raven as their first camera. I know it sounds lame but it makes me feel like a proud father and sometimes parents do stupid things to reward their kids that probably they shouldn't do and sometimes that pisses off every other parent around them.

Being a creative is hard and most people that bought a Raven bought it not because they want to make a business out of it like a lot of people here, but they bought it because they have have a dying need to create something. Raven owners , for the most part, are just enterting this very hard business. Well it's not just a hard business.. it's frankly a totally fucked-up-shit-show of a business. With a lot of "no's" that are going to come up in front of them and I feel like if I can give something a little back to them then I feel I need to. I honestly don't mean to piss you or anyone else off when I do stupid shit like this... I promise you it comes from a good place.

it is as if you talk about me personally - you meet my soul

My gosh. Surprised by some of these negative comments. This is a great offering and the Red team should be proud of their work. Great job y’all!

Nice competitor for the Alexa Mini for 2k, Full-HD delivery or soft 4k or UHD delivery.
ABt speedbooster really makes sense on this one (perfect fit) you can still use S35 lenses but also FF lenses.

Just to bad it's not 6k S35.

Dragon for a long time was my favorite sensor, nice to see it's re release. Exciting time for people just joining the red community. For the shot on teaser does anyone know which lenses were used?

This upgrade option is amazing thank you Jarrod and Red team for making this available!

With the added processing power is there any change to low light capibility when swapping from scarlet-w to dragon X?

Also I assume you can film at lower compression ratios as well correct?

Thanks again!
Danny.

You have to be brain dead to not upgrade from SW to X. If you don't, all SW owners will soon be viewed by competitent Producers as Raven owners. $5k is nothing if you work full time in this industry. If you don't have plans of being able to eventually afford 8k you shouldn't be in this industry.

It's possible that being "brain dead" is not required to see that the difference between SW and X while drastic is also very specific. For instance Scarlet-W has always been a Unicorn. It has always and still is DSMC2. It's full blown DSMC2. It was also stamped "Weapon" So when it comes to producers what they asked about and cared about was first
"is it dragon?". Yes it its.
"Is it Weapon". Although that matters so much less now, yes it is.
"Does it shoot 5k?" Yes it does.

Those things right there checked all the boxes for most every producer on indie features I've ever worked. Some of these where my RED Scarlet-W was going to be paired with a 6K Red Dragon. So the big thing they cared about was "is it a matching sensor"

Now, about the specific differences. This is where the difference is massive. If the questions change from "dragon? 5k? etc." to something that involves higher frame rates, lower compression at higher frame rates... or lower than 4:1 compression at 24fps... or internal IPP2 (which RED markering is pushing as the big differentiator)... well these are area the Scarlet-W cannot satisfy.

So, if someone is using their Scarlet-W to shoot content that could also be shot on say a Canon C200.... then this upgrade (and possibly owning the S-W) make little sense.

For guys who need more this is fantastic! For Raven owners who have outgrown their cameras this is AMAZING!

This truly is a great offering by RED. Like others have said, I'm glad they give us options. And I love being a part of this family where the manufacturer is more then just nice to the community—but they're actually a member of it just like all of us.

Yes, 2:1 REDCODE at 5K Full Format (5120 x 2700) and 24 fps
vs Scarlet-W 4:1

Honestly, what is possibly more significant than these upgrade paths (although very intriguing), is the fact that RED just released a $15k entry point into their high powered DSMC2 Unified camera line. That's actually pretty cool.

For those just entering the RED ecosystem, it's a real clear option! I wouldn't want the upgrades to steal the thunder of the camera itself.

**anyways, I've been on this thread/soapbox perhaps too much ;) **

This has to be one of the funiest comments I've read in awhile. Thanks for the laugh though!

Now that DX is re-upping Dragon, any chance we could see a "DEB enabled" flag in the embedded metadata (for both DSMC1 and DSMC2)?

To be clear, I don't mean DEB being done in-camera, I mean a toggle that makes it default to "on" when you load clips into RCXp (or any software that uses the SDK)... I made a similar request with DRX back with MX, and RED eventually did it...

When is the upgrade path from S-W to S-X opening?
Is it open now?

And how long does it take to do the upgrade?
