  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 OLED EVF vs Bomb OLED EVF

How's the color/contrast/image size?

I have only done limited testing due to being down for the count battling a cold. The color is sharp and accurate as is the contrast. In regards to the image size, it appears to be better than other EVFs that I've used in the past.

Yes, what is the Image size compared to previous?

I find looking at a small image almost useless.

I have not used a RED EVF prior to this one, so unfortunately no frame of reference for you.

Is there a rail system for the DSMC2 EVF that allows it to adjusted in and out or left and right? I shoot with my left eye and to me this setup looks somewhat uncomfortable.

Just got mine. Comparing it to the Bomb EVF it is an evolutionary improvement in sharpness, color, brightness and image size. Not a huge difference, but noticeable in every way. It is small and light. Highlights still seem to blow pretty easily, so not something to judge lighting from without care/exposure tools.

I have to say my initial impression is the position of the LEMO connector really compromises things. I suppose they put it there to allow that simple connection to the camera body, but that position is really useless for most production, so it's a bit of a bummer. Since the Lemo is between the EVF and the body, it forces the viewfinder away just to accommodate the connector. It would have been much better to have the connector on the back like the BOMB EVF. I'm not sure how I can configure mounts to do what they need to do for Hand Held and studio mode and not be hampered by the Lemo location. Perhaps there will be a simple optical EVF extender (why else does the diopter bayonet off?), which would make it a little more functional for Studio mode when mounted to the camera. But Hand Held is going to be rough cause the Lemo is going to want to be where the lens is in some set-ups. Maybe they have something else coming that will help. But I'm not getting rid of my Bomb EVFs.

Just got my new EVF today. First impressions are like Jeff's Although I would say more than incremental. I had a LCOS bomb prior and there is a very big difference to me in sharpness and image clarity. Also because its higher res the status texts in the image are much smaller yet still clearly legible. Image feels larger, more immersive. It also a much lighter item too.

The downside so far is actually an upside too. I have the pogo mount for it, which is great as it cable free! Really very nice for me. But its locked in place now with only tilt being an option for the eyepiece. Its pretty far forward so it felt OK for handheld...I would like it another inch forward or so for my own comfort but it will be fine. The hope now for me will be what will attach to that nifty PL locking eyepiece in it? Will there be an eyepiece extension like the optical days? That would be just fine by me !

Overall a big win for me.

Cheers

Do all of you who have the new EVF feel that eye fatigue is less and that the image "sits" in a better place than the old EVF? If you have a chance to A/B the old with the new I would love to see your impressions. So many factors go into what makes an EVF work. Resolution and DR obviously but optically it is the hardest part of the equation. It was all optical work in the film days and hopefully we are getting better.

I did a moderate comparison within a few days of each other at the RED Store. This is something that's hard to quantify, but I think it comes down to the screen quality and optics of the DSMC2 EVF being improved that "makes life easier". It's certainly a noticeable improvement. I haven't been fond of most EVFs until fairly recently.

To answer Peter..I do feel that this viewfinder feels much closer to the optical days. Definitely more room without being too wide. I never liked having to dart around too much with the eye. I have been using the LCOS bomb for years and thought it decent but the new one is much nicer. I have not put it through too much of a test yet but I will try to update when I do. I am hopeful for an optical extension in the works too as the resolution seems so high that a built in optical doubler might be useable... Hope that helps

This is a quick down and dirty quick look at the Weapon EVF and Bomb.
Obviously the iPhone through the eyepiece is not the best representation but at least its something to start with.

Ok maybe Im not the norm but I have been using the BOMB OLED and had the LCOS before that and the REDONe EVF also. I have to say the extra real-estate does help with the image in the new WEAPON EVF. It is much clearer and I find for my head eye that Im not having to turn my head to get to see the entire image like I did a bit on the BomB OLED. The contrast and clarity or sharpness for me is the biggest difference. I don't feel the constant need to turn on the FOCUS setting in the display or monitor menu to get to see what a sharp image looks like. So thats going to be a plus for me. I never really liked the FOCUS/Peaking setting as it added a lot of edge artifacts when turned on. But a necessity in some situations. Weapon EVF is very light and smaller form than the BOMB and again maybe Im not the norm but to be able to have the viewfinder cable free on the side of the camera for some quick light weight setups will be great. I could see after just a few min around the house that to have the camera in a light setup and handheld would really be great. You could almost walk in to almost any place and just look like you have a home video camera. Which will be nice for some doco work. All in all Im glad I have moved on to the new system. Although as stated the improvements are not over the top they are the final bump to make the viewfinder a lot better than the Bomb but I would suggest trying it before going out and dropping $4K plus on it.IMG_0957.jpgIMG_0959.jpgIMG_0960.jpgIMG_0961.jpgIMG_0963.jpgIMG_0964.jpgSo I decided to update and add a couple photos for comparison. The biggest difference as you may be able to see is how the NEW Weapon EVF handles or has more natural looking image in low light. While the Bomb may seem brighter the quality of the image is better with the Weapon. And more natural to what you would see to the eye.The Bomb EVF OLED makes darker areas red or more on the red side than the newer Weapon EVF. If you have had one you know that the lower the light the more un natural the image looks. Just for the record the darker area on the right side is a dark brown leather chair. so you can see how red it gets with the Bomb vs the Weapon.

Like night and day, someone even said it's the best they have seen among EVFs compared to ALL EVFs out there.

Only thing is that the update rate is a bit off in this current firmware so it "stutters" a lot in movements, but the image is perfect. It's too expensive for me though, but it would have been nice to have it.

Just received our new DSMC2 EVF. First impressions:Holy Smokes!

Played around it in the shop and it's MUCH MUCH better than the previous OLED one. Will put it through its paces this week and report back.

Cheers.

Just got mine and totally agree. Color is great, brightness, contrast, clarity, and very importantly, image size. Stoked to finally have a nice EVF. LOVE open gate

Here's the settings I've been running for a few days:
-open gate ON
-sharpness 15
-brightness 1 notch down from full

Just got ours as well - this is one magical little box, coming from Bomb OLED to this there's a world of difference to please the discerning eye. So glad we decided to take the plunge and go for it.

@Jake i'm with you on those settings =)

Just got off a shoot on some parachuting the loving the new DSMC2 cableless setups overall for compact on the go work.

I really like the EVF, and look forward to using it more in monitor-less setups. I am not really a fan of the camera parameter menu structure directly accessed via the Sidekick / Switchblade, and prefer "remote" mode using the rotary dial and four way keys to navigate the menu settings on the display.

On the EVF, I can't see a way to easily do this. I've enabled the RED Standard overlay via the Monitor Control Menu. Pressing menu does bring up the menu functions, and I can navigate / select as expected. I'm not able to roll the rotary dial to directly change the top bar UI level parameters (Frame Rate, Shutter Angle, Iris, Compression, ISO), selected by rolling the little red line underneath them, then pressing set.

Is this a menu setting I'm missing, or a limitation of the EVF?

Mine is working like you want, check your monitor priority settings and make sure evf is at the top

Any thoughts on how this compares to other non-RED EVFs? Curious to see if the cost and quality align vs others.

Received my EVF and it rocks. Such a nice image.

Anyone know how to get EVF and HDMI output working at the same time with the Base Expander?
I just have the EVF and a HDMI monitor connected, no LCD.

Is this a menu setting I'm missing

Make sure to check your monitor priority setting. You need to place your EVF at the top of the stack in order to control it with the sidekick.

I can't get both my EVF and HDMI monitor to work at the same time.

Anyone have any ideas how this needs to be setup to work?
