Thanks, this is great. The Beta has taken care of problems I have been having with the Nikon mount since v6.0.44. Thanks to Red support for staying with us on this, including swapping out the mount to make sure the one I had wasn't a problem. All my lenses including the Zeiss ZF2s are working great for iris control. Excellent!

Be aware the R3D file flip function creates files that presently both Premiere Pro and FCPX will not recognise. RCX39 will see them but not read the flag and flip them while the Beta RCX40 does present the files correctly. Not sure about FCP7 or other software but the only other app that I know of that can use these flipped files is After Effects. This will change over time as the software engineers catch up but at the moment be cautious.

Would love to see shortcuts saved with presets squeezed into an upcoming release. :)

Thanks,

David

That probably explains it! :) I have never used presets up until last night. I would painfully go through and re-set all of my settings after a camera update. So I decided to try saving a Preset last night before upgrading to 6.3.10. When I restored them, I noticed that my shortcuts were not on the main menu page, so I assumed it did not work and just did a reset and re-did all of my settings. The resolutin and compression ratio seemed to be correct when I restored my presets, but the frame rate was showing 1/48 and not 179.n degrees, so not all settings seem to be captured in saving a preset.

or I could have just done it all wrong. :)

I don't know if it's too much to ask but would like to request 1.75x ANA mode. Thanks for the updates Jarred.

Ah Cool!

I'm not running betas right now, just the release builds, I didn't look for it enough in the notes!

Thanks so much for adding this.

David

It has been in the 6.3 beta since 6.3.6. (Look for "Shortcuts" under the "System" tab).

Would it be possible to allow 36p as a base framerate? I'd love to play with that since it falls between 24p and 48p :)

Why 36? Is there a 36p format? Normally a base framerate is a transmission rate, which includes 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60. 47.952 and 48 for the Hobbit. I assume there will also be a 119.88 and 120 for future 120 Hz.

For over cranking, then you can have anything > 23.976 where you could add your 36, but those are not base rates.

No 36p format that I know of currently. I was just hoping they could add this base framerate in to experiment with since, as you noted, you can choose any shutter speed.

Do they really have a 48p transmission rate? I seem to only ever be offered editing in 50p on FCPX, but perhaps Premiere and the other editing suites are more accommodating?

How was the Hobbit transmitted in theaters from box to projector? I don't know the answer. But to your point, no one really seems to support 48 or wants to. I did run a CRT front projector at 48 Hz years ago. It was better results than 60 Hz as it removed the uneven judder. People would often run projectors at 48 or 72 Hz for the best motion for 24p content.

A streaming service can support any rate. Not sure if the boxes playing the streaming content can though. Using BBC shows, such as Sherlock, as an example. I know that Netflix does not alter the native frame rate of Sherlock. They want to preserve artistic intent as much as possible.

Since I target Blu-ray as a primary source as I believe it is the highest quality consumer format we have. I include UHD BD in that comment. It has fairly restrictive frame rates. For 3D, 23.976 was the only option for 1080p. No 24 or 25. In fact, no real 25 for BD at all until UHD BD came along. All shows on BD are 50 Hz and not 25. Easy enough to recover the 25 from a 50 Hz encode, assuming they used progressive_frame and not interlaced field encoding.

Can you do a 36p for overcranking? If so, you can shoot that way with the 23.976 base. Then just convert to an image sequence and you can make the base rate anything you like. Just need to make sure your editing software supports this. And the playback device supports this.

Sorry for the off subject tangent.

Back to the FW topic, I installed it this week and did a new black shade. This is the first time I had noticed that I got a warning that the black shade was out of date. That was cool! I do a new BS with every FW update. Usually both an auto and a 23.98.

And maybe 1.5x or 1.42x desqueeze to have a correct in camera preview using Iscoramas in the 6K 16:9 mode!!!!!

Yes these all these modes would be great to have. I didn't buy an ISCORAMA because of lack of 1.5x squeeze.

I'm really happy with my ISCO ultrastar / Rangefinder combo, it's a 1.75x squeeze and manageable to monitor at 2x but it would be really great if the RED TEAM could add all of them: 1.5x, 1.42x and 1.75x so we can monitor accurately in-camera.

On 6.3.10, though not listed as supported in the beta manual, the Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm f/2.8 ZF.2 is working well with automatic iris control (remember to set the little button with iris twisted to max before turning on camera). I also turn camera on/off between switching lenses. I am really liking this lens for vr. So far so good on this beta, I am starting to use it for production.

For PRORES playback, you still have to use the beta 6.3.x and not release 6.2.x builds.
