  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Leica M Mount

Oh ok. So it's not a cine lens.

It's the same lens as the photography one with geared rings. That was what I figured when I read the AC article... just wondered if you knew something I didn't. I'll contact them to be sure.

A cine lens here in this tread means that each still lens can be customised or particularly Leica Noctilux 50mm M f/0.95 ASPH can be adopted for a feature movie shooting.

And of course that Leica Noctilux 50mm M f/0.95 ASPH is not true cine lens mechanically and optically speaking but can be used as a cine lens without any big issue like a breathing, smooth focus, long focus throw, exact focus markings, etc,...

A difference between a true cine and a still lens is best presented by Carl Zeiss at the link below:

Regarding ultra-fast cine lenses, isn't it possible to have some lenses modified by a lens manufacturer or lens hack so as to achieve things like f/0.7

i've heard of that being done by some ASC cinematographers for certain shots back in the day.

I have a LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 90mm f/2 ASPH (6-bit) lens - used just a few times with an M8. Sounds like this lens works very well on Scarlet - if anyone in the SF Bay Area with a Scarlet and a Leica adaptor would like to demo it for a day locally let me know. Id like to see the Scarlet in action! -Andrew

Jarred,

any updates on the Leica mount you can share with us?

I've got my Scarlet and itching to get my Leica M lenses on it and really don't want to have to buy canon lenses if I can avoid it.

cheers

Michael

Guys,

just to remind you that Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH is a cine lens and was used in shooting of several scenes for

HANNA shot by Alwin H. Kuchler, BSC and directed by Joe Wright

Alwin H. Kuchler, BSC:

“The Noctilux is the most beautiful lens I
have ever used, and I wish there were a
whole set of lenses made from the same
glass,” says the cinematographer. “It
does magic to flesh tones. We used it for
Hanna’s flashback of her mother
[played by Vicki Kreips], a scene we
shot in the absolute last light of day. It
was so dark I didn’t even bother to take
a light reading, but I felt optimistic that
something beautiful would come of it
because of the Noctilux. Vicki was
standing at a frozen lake, and we lit her
with an LED ring light that we
dimmed down during the shot. She just
fades into the background like a distant
memory.”

Yes read that article as well, since I'm a member of this Magazine... ;)

The Noctilux, is indeed a Fantastic lens, however I need to come out and say that after multiple tests, with several lenses,
my absolute conclusion is that while the Noctilux at f/0.95, is the undisputed KING of low light, and it does indeed render really nice skin tones,
and if you have a need for a Super Low light performer while maintaining a fantastic IQ, then you have your lens, "THE NOCTILUX f/0.95.

However, if you look for the SHARPEST 50mm, the KING of sharpness in the Leica M 50mm is the Leica Normal 50mm f/1.4 Summilux M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens!!

It's a great lens, I use it all the time on my M9-P? Can't wait for to try it out on my Scarlet.

It seems, that the leica wide lenses would go too deep into the insides of the camera and push against the frame that holds the OPLF.

I had PL modified ZEISS distagons, amazing small lenses and unfortunatelly it was this very issue as well.

I think Jarred noted at some point, that to support wide Leica-M lenses, the inside of the camera had to be modified as well,
so that the lens is not in danger to touch the OPLF frame.

It is a dream, it will come true, but its killing me, that it is not out NOW :-D

Love the M9, the only issue I have is that for what I do with it, is just too small in my hands.

This is my current Leica M set up, and actually just purchasing an other exact set, so I have two of each for a two camera set up... ;)

I have a Leica R 28-70 that I'm pretty damn fond of and will throw on the Epic when my Canon mount arrives. As for the differences in the M and R lines, I have a couple thoughts. Maybe our resident Leica expert will weigh in if there are any inaccuracies.

One of the things that makes rangefinder images so incredible is that the lenses can by of symmetrical design. When you have to introduce a mirror between the lens and the image plane (as in SLR camera bodies) you have to redesign the lens to make room. This lens design is called "retro-focus" and it introduces some compromises in image quality. Lens design has become highly advanced and many retro-focus lenses rival their symmetrical cousins but generally speaking a symmetrical lens will have less distortion and greater edge to edge sharpness than a retro-focus design. Because of this, I would assume that the M glass outperforms the R glass. Given that Leica's M lenses will continue to be refined throughout the years while the R lenses have reached an end of the line, the difference in quality is only going to grow greater and greater.

I'm in a quandry, myself. I have the Panchros, which I love. I have my 17mm and 24mm TS-E's and I will probably add Schneider's new Canon mount T/S 50 and 90. Beyond that, I'd like to have a lightweight set of fast lenses and the L series is probably the ticket. Still, I can't help wondering about some Leica glass.... heh heh.

Chris,

Do you have the 2.8 35-70? If so, that's a special lens:)

M

Okay...

I might have to just eat UP this words....

"However, if you look for the SHARPEST 50mm, the KING of sharpness in the Leica M 50mm is the Leica Normal 50mm f/1.4 Summilux M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens!!"

.... It so seems I have further tested the "LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/.95 ASPH" and at 1.4 it is sharper in the center of the Summilux 50 1.4, till f/11, after that, there is light fall off at the edges.

So I guess I'm holding on to this baby for the RED LEICA "M" to go on EPIC and shoot some serious MAGIC!!

Btw, B&H has just upped the price form $10,495 to now $10,995... ;)
