  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do you realize that you're completely insane Jim?!!!!! I love it :D

I believe the fear of a new kind of camera and a workflow that isn't perfect yet is what is keeping costumers loyal to Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, and others. Sure, those companies are happily afloat now, but the tsunami is on the horizon and rapidly approaches. It will do more than just rock their boats, it will capsize them! I'm interested to see how the giant companies respond when that happens!

RED knows best. Resolution does matter, so does image sensor size and data rates. I know no other company comes close to doing what RED is doing, especially not at the price points, because those other guys are too conservative and far removed from their costumers. Their costumers use what they are told to use. RED's costumers use what they want RED to develop.

The DSMC sounds nuts! Just the sort of thing I would expect to come from RED! Keep up the good work guys!

What do guys make of it over there at RED?

Very interesting. The concept is good.

What people are having a hard time getting their arms around is frame rates at cinema sizes and what to do with all the info. I'm not sure if this one shoots video or not. If so, I'm betting on 720P like the Nikon. The Nikon is showing its aliasing issues by how they read the sensor (every forth line?).

I have said before that two things will separate us from the competition going forward... our sensor program and REDCODE. I'll now suggest that we have a couple of other tricks up our sleeves. I have to bite my tongue a bit here or I will give away too much of our DSMC. Like I said... it will be the "most desirable object in the world". And it will be metal. :-)

I have successfully traced GuyB's network IP addresss... to the Sony PR headquarters building in New York.

Tom is a genius. I love his work and what he does for the timelapse community. Go get them buddy!

Now, I am beginning to believe Jim is actually going to release a DSLR in 2009.
I believe he has an agreement with an Asian OEM manufacturer. Just like Sears does.
very clever. But, is it going to be revolutionary?
It will definitely be cheap. Jim said it is metal.
So, it will be more expensive than the plastic model the OEM currently sell in China.
To make it special, Jim will put a 35 mm sensor inside. That will make the cost $200 for the body only.

To Summarize, Jim's DSLR will sell for $200 body only.
It will have 35 mm 12.5MP mysterium sensor.
Will take (with adapter) Canon and Nikon Lenses.

Now we know how Jim intends to kill DSLR.
Sounds like a good idea and I am willing to wait for this camera.

This one doesn't ... they are coming out with a 14-140 'HD' lens and camera in 2009 : they supposedly couldn't get contrast-detect autofocus to work fast enough.

Another handicap : all current still camera zoom lenses are varifocal.

DSMC as a digital X-PAN?

DSMC as a digital X-PAN?

Being a wide-angle shooter, my holy grail of a camera would be a digital version of the late lamented X-PAN. My hope is the DSMC will come close to this.

With a super high-resolution 2:1 sensor (Monstro?), high dynamic range, and low noise, this could be my dream landscape and travel camera, especially if they can keep the form factor compact. While I'd love the ability to use Leica glass, I trust RED could provide a killer wide lens that would also do this sensor justice.

What about a digital View camera ? Large format sensor! No mirror! Ability to distort the image by skewing the sensor plane! etc. I'm sure you guys are able to find something for the inconvenient of weight and size! Make suitable for action the advantages of a View camera! That would be revolutionary!

They already make digital backs for view cameras. They're "scanning" backs - the sensor sort of scans across the frame and takes a long time to make an exposure. Like strapping a flatbed scanner to the back of a lens...

Just so you know, I own a D3 and a 1Ds MKIII...

Jim

I always knew you had good taste. And this tells me that you know you need to absolutely destroy both.
The D3 for speed, focusing, and noise
The 1DSIII for resolution.

And I get the feeling from following RED for the past year and a half or so that once you know what you need, you do it. And so this tells me that DSMC has a pretty damn good chance of doing what I need.

besides, with all that Nikon and Canon glass, you wouldn't make it so you couldn't use it :)

So the name is official:

"GRAIL"

Everyone knows the Grail is made of wood.

That would be SANGRAAL (or Holy Grail).

RED's GRAIL is described by the other common definition:

GRAIL –noun. Any greatly desired and sought-after objective; ultimate ideal or reward. :-)

How... Much? Ballpark figure:detective2:

Seven-Hundred-Million-Dollars...just for the body.

Just bustin ballons, but I really hope that Red Grail's price competes with the DSLR market's price range once its out. (see what I did there? =D)

If you want digital large format and be able to shoot at say 1/125 & f/32, I wouldn't hope for anything soon. Phase One just announced the first true full frame 645 medium format back and it's going to be pricey. Ok back to topic.

I'll shake your hand Jim if you can beat the low light sensitivity / High ISO performance of the Nikon D3. I think thats the most important hurdle to get across.

I also think you might shake Mr. Nikon's hand if they could get that sensor to do 100fps at full resolution!

Sensors are trade-offs. Sensitivity and low noise are helped with large pixels... which means lower resolution. Speed is another issue. And then dynamic range. Pick your poison. Everyone wants it all (so do we), but it will take a couple more generations to get there. Good news is that our program is improving in each area with every new generation sensor. We are very proud of the RED ONE performance set compared to anyone currently in the industry. But customers need to judge again every year as things evolve. We have put our hat in the ring. We will not go "one and out" if I can help it.
