  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No more new camcorder until Scarlet out.

Probably no more new camera until DSMC out wow!

Btw, why these anonymous Jacklegs continue to bleat, "Fanboy this or fanboy that..." with every other breath... especially when they can't really be bothered to vet the owner or the company in order to make a credible argument? Why this continuous need to deride Red Owners and Users... do these CHUCKLEHEADS enjoy servitude to crippleware, crap service and insane prices! Do they NOT understand that what Red is doing will spur these megaliths to change -- bring better products and pricing to everyone in the end?

Why would Sony bother with a user board for a small upstart called RED Digital Cinema Company?

In order for SONY to be disturbed:
RED may have to outperform SONY´s `cinema camera´, which shoots HDTV, and sell it at 1/5 the price.
RED may have to come up with a con-/prosumer cam - say better res than EX1 and at half it´s price, using cheaper media.
RED even may have to develop it´s own DSLR - possibly better and cheaper than legacy products.

But wait - they are doing it right now!

Why not suggest RED to develop a digital super-Hasselblad instead, at least that´s a field SONY has no interest in. (And here is a chance for some 20.000 sales worldwide.)

Someone said some time ago: I have had it! I am pulling the plug on them.
Does somebody feel the drain already?

(I firmly believe in civilisation, but if I were Jim, I´d check my brakes each time before driving off ...)

First off, I'm not promoting myself at all though it may seem so at the beginning. I'm just trying to help people who read this understand where I'm coming from.

No joke, I bought a D700 today. After that I found this revolution, after my many, many, hours of research. My eye's are wide open at the moment. I'm a 21 year old college student, advertising major, but photography is my passion, I freelance for a newspaper and magazine, and I'm planning to take out a loan now for about 6 grand to invest in lenses and lighting for my new Nikon.
(please develop a nikon mount after your revolution infects the entire traditional dslr market!!)

I stumbled upon this forum (which I'm not into forum's at all really), and just holy f***ing shit. Seriously Jim, thank you for not acting your age. You're the shit. I don't know you, I only know a little of what you've done, but just after reading your posts in this forum, I was stunned. The passion with which you are doing this, is evident in every post. I wasn't expecting to read your posts on here, nor see you respond at all.

I don't know much of what you all speak of on here, but Jim, I know passion, and just once again thank you for directing your passion, and that of your teams, toward this revolution. I appreciate that you and your team seem to take things so personally regarding your products. I get this feeling of positive progression from this company. It's refreshing to see a creative industry, approached with creative technology, all for the simple goal of achieving better results.
 
i'm starting to worry

will jim really can deliver this camera? i mean, there's a lot of wish list for what this DSMC would be. Some of it make sense and possible to build. but could this DSMC be "affordable" if, lets say, it accommodate 80% of those wish list?

if this camera really can use nikon and canon lens (also leica and minolta) and better than d3 or 1ds mkiii , nikon and canon would end up being lens maker only.

Am a happy Canon 20D and 40D user,been quite a long time on film canon cameras too,recently I've got my hands on a D300 borrowed from a friend,let me tell you av been blown away by the dynamic range,texture,color and film behaviour of it's file it produced,,,the noise pattern are like film grain compared to my canon's image which is more like old VHS pattern noise,am not saying that canon is not good,but suddenly i found myself missing a lot....well am very curious to know your feeling about the Nikon D3 and Canon 1DSMKIII,thanks for replying..:-)

Hello all.
If you people plan a FF 35mm camera (36x24mm), please don't go beyond 20 mpx. :) Sony did that recently. And Canon a while ago.
And at least the Sony's camera has no advantage in image quality compared to an upsized 12mpx one (D700).
Only perhaps with the very-top-end lenses that are optically corrected, capable of (out)resolving the 24mpx sensor. Or the Canon's 21mpx. Even an APS-C 12 or 14 or 15mpx sensor has the same problems.
For 35mm FF format something around 16~20mpx is the sweet spot for photography, allowing for the not-so-perfect lenses to achieve nice pics.
Or create a DSLR(-like) camera with an interchangeable 'back' of 12, 18 and 24mpx, and see wich one is more succesful :D.

Just because of this new feature, I'd never buy it.
I'd never buy an SLR without an optical viewfinder unless a digital one would be exactly like what I would see in an optical one, meaning I would mistake one for the other.
The article focuses on the size reduction which is not a problem to me for an SLR.
1.44 Megapixel would be interesting to check out though. That would be a first if pixels were suddenly as precise as a lens.

If the resolution of the digital view finder is very high, and there is no noticeable latency it would be great. Seeing DOF and exposure in the viewfinder is a big plus IMO.

Maybe so concerning the technical information, but concerning the organic information that's another story.
In photography you are the director and the DP at the same time so being in the scene, in the moment is very important, feeling the subject, and snap at the right moment, and that is more than pixels on a screen. At least that's how I see it.
I feel like that is why it is so tough to direct a film using a monitor or digital viewfinder because this information cannot be provided at the time of the shoot, and that is why it is easier to get away from that and just look at what's being shot with your own eyes.
How many times have I seen something on the computer I did not see in the digital viewfinder of the digital still camera I was using. This never happened to me with an optical viewfinder because I almost always know when I snap, if it is going to be good, average or if I missed.
Also, something personal maybe, but the best moment when I use an SLR is not when I watch the result but when I snap the picture. I get no pleasure using an electronic viewfinder, I just hope I guessed right when I pressed the shutter. I sure was not in the moment.

Funny you should mention that, but a friend of mine did support for a car diagnosis software company once and that´s exactly what one guy was complaining about, because that silly cup holder had gotten stuck. After she was able to talk again, she patiently explained things to him, silent tears of laughter running down her face ...
