  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So Mark is using a Variable Neutral Density Filter (I wonder what brand and model) at 7 stops. According to these posts below by Jarred, the coming Motion Mount is 8X... So does that mean up to 8 stops of ND filtering? Even at it's lowest level, it seems like it is 1 stop. You're right Andy (nice name)... that Dragon and Motion Mount combo will be nice. I hope they release a Canon version soon since Canon Lenses are clearly the way to go to maximize the 6K nearly Full Frame sensor.

The RED MOTION mount not only incorporates an integrated 8x Electronic ND filter in adjustable 1/100 stop granularity, but also overtakes the sensors timing to give you a true global shutter. All integrated and controlled by the camera UI. Eliminates Shutter Judder and defeats temporal aliasing.

There is some light loss with the Electronic ND.. when it is off it is not completely off as there is still a piece of glass there. That's why we made it a mount... and completely integrated.... so you can take it off if you need to shoot in the dark and cant afford the light loss ( about a stop and change )

Night tests completed.... and WOW ! took our little team by surprise. Better results than we had hoped for.
4000ISO is completely useable. Even some of the 6400 iso scenes are good to use.

Spoke to Jarred today,
We are good to share Saturday onwards.

Which is good timing for me, because I have to go through several hundred test shots to find images that can represent the cameras dynamic range properly.
( Not to mention I have to go back to my real job tomorrow, because I have producers about to kill me if I keep playing Mr camera tester nerd )

This thread is done, Im starting a new one Friday / Saturday.

Here is a teaser image. :)
Enjoy.

This one image already impresses me...thanks Mark! Looking forward to what else you have in store.

Looking foreward to that thread Mark.
Amazing teaser.
Do you think the images look flat right out of camera due to the extra stops?

What is perceived as flat is really just all the extra DR info, ready to be graded in whatever direction you want. You can't grade back in details that are lost, but you can add contrast and hold details that are captured with massive DR.
I think we all are so accustomed to seeing contrasty in-camera images that it will take some time to adjust to seeing soooooooo much dynamic range.

Dragon and the Motion mount will be a killer combo and redefine working outside, I think. The idea of having incamera digital ND as well as dialable shutter, linked with the Dragon;s DR (which is what's really exciting) and extended ISO, is exciting,

Motion mount is the way forward. FILTERS are so old school.

I've seen a fair bit of what Mark has shot and all I have to say is the sensor is the real deal, no marketing bullshit or overhype. And I've only seen screengrabs :)

Get ready.

I know this might be a stretch, but do you guys think red might have an upgrade path to the motion mounts? I love my titanum mounts and would rather not have to figure out a way to sell them rather just upgrade. Jarred any thoughts? You've guys have already done so much for all you users and wouldn't want to add more :-).

Mark if you are using a motion mount doesn't that mean you are losing 2stops of sensitivity as well? No you aren't a tech guy but if that is true and your mind is blown with 4000iso then without the motion mount you should be even more amazed.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe Mark is using a Motion Mount. He said on the podcast that he is using Canon lenses, and so far there is only a soon-to-be-released PL Motion Mount (Canon next but probably COULD be first if Red wanted to switch gears... hint, hint). He said he was using a VND filter. The Motion Mount has an inherent loss of light -- 1 stop and some change (according to Jarred) but NOT of DR, as far as I understand.

Wow, great example of the Dragon sensors extended capabilities, thanks Mark.

I thought I was the only one who was looking forwards to the motion mount :)

Seems Dragon and it are made for each other, which is why I brought it up... IMO it's a very (very) important part of this new push/third wave from RED... I'd even go so far as to make it part of the new off the shelf Dragon, It would only be a couple of $K more, and be something that would add a final touch to the package (against other 'brands' out there :)

So, as I said a few pages back, we petition Jim & Jarred to get one to Toia (or Mr T) ASAP.
