!!NSFW!!

Got my Dragon with new OLPF late Friday (I held off when I first got the upgrade email - got lucky on OLPF timing when I finally mailed it in). Jumped into the studio with a model friend tonight to shoot some for your RU enjoyment. At T2 the Crons have a real shallow DOF and some CA. Some R3D's for you to play with. NSFW if your work is not safe for viewing fine art boobies.

Let me know what you think and maybe some grading suggestions. Cheers!

Gunleik, Casey and Phil . . . those are good mates to have on your team - even in Dodge Ball ;-)

Maybe see you guys in a couple hours at the Peter Lyons Collister REDed session. Should be awesome!!

josh how do you know you have new olpf ? seems that there few reducer that got their last week wit the old ...

i apologize for keep asking the same question over and over but i am not really getting an aster, so i am keep trying ... : if someone figure how to tell by the metadata please let us know...
thanks

. . . because they told me when I picked it up at the Factory last Friday. Anyone just now getting the Dragon upgrade is getting the new OLPF. A week ago maybe not. Physically I believe one looks red and one looks blue in reflection. Phil would know better on that.

How 'bout them boobies?? ;-)

Edit: my above tongue in cheek "boobie" comment was a reaction to the fact that to this point in the thread no one has commented on the actual images provided. It seemed comical that I'm being interrogated about the veracity of my "new OLPF" statement rather than anything to do with the actual images (which contain a purposeful range of technical challenges for both camera and lenses). Camera gear nerds . . . they ask the darnedest questions with a beautiful nude woman standing in front of them ;-)

For now get the serial numbers of the cameras that shot the footage and ask your BS to find out.

i don;t own a camera , i am a colorist , i receive footage for jobs , and most of the time the director or DP won't know those things ( they just rent and shoot) ...

Soon this will be a non-issue. But I am curious as I'm not a professional colourist, how the information about the new OLPF will effect your decisions as a colourist? There is only a very small amount of Dragons out there without the new OLPF. In any case the existing metadata contains Camera ID info. Perhaps the next version of Redcine will have the OLPF ID tag.

Hey Josh, did you get any exteriors (something with lots of detail in the highlights of the shot)?

i will not affect my decision , it will affect my judgment of a camera that apparently keeps improving because of new OLPF , clients often rely on my knowledge when we talk about the image ...

i thought that the new OLFP replaced included the new calibration that apparently increase 1+ more stops of DR retained in the highlight , but apparently that comes with new firmware install followed by black shading (i am speculating from the info i red (and the way jarred phrased his statement on a recent post ) ?

so question: if a user does not execute the new black shading , the new calibration won't come up? and needs to be done ply once (at least?)

in times when a new camera is out everybody judges it , and is confusing keep track of all this variables ... so apparently the best quality achievable by a dragon today , require new OLPF and latest firmware (to get new sensor calibration)

thanks

Yes I agree on all your points. Knowledge is definitely key. You are also correct on there being so many variables in the equation to getting optimal results. But even with all cameras being equal, they will all give different results. Black Shading, exposure, focus, framing, lighting, all add variables beyond your control. Certainly doesn't make your job easier

well , i s more simple than that , in this case actually is just about judging the new dragon compared to Alexa or others ... about DR , how highlight roll off , noise , quality of the noise , colors etc... about how easy/hard/time consuming is to grade ... (Film for example require way less than nay other digital camera time to get a pleasant image ( off course the definition of pleasant is subject to interpretation ))...

so off course i don't to come to conclusions too soon ,but with all these multiple factors involved is not easy ...

ps: so does anybody knows if the new calibration ( better highlight DR retention ) is triggered by new firmware + black shading ? no black shading no better DR?... i am confused ... ( my speculations starts from jarred's first pst here http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...make-sure-you-are-on-the-newest-release-build ) + some statements that new calibration gained 1+ stops on highlight ...

thanks

Only had a couple hours between projects to shoot so ended up in the studio. At RedEd (Peter Collister!!) for a couple days but will shoot and post more this weekend.

If there's anything you guys would like to see test shot just post on this thread and I'll try to get it done. I'm still learning both the Summicron-C's and the new sensor so will be doing mucho testing over the next couple weeks. Also will be testing the Angenieux 16-42 and 30-80mm for 6K coverage.

Cheers!

Jarred would need to confirm, but I believe its the new factory calibration that comes with the OLPF. I sent my Dragon back last week for the OLPF upgrade. I should have it back this week.

The instructions that came with .38 was very clear about requiring a new black shade.

I am mostly interested in the amount of CA. Anything you can do that shows it off around f/2.8.

Living the dream. I am officially jealous. Can't wait to pick your brain when you get back to SD.
