  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON vs EPIC MX Noise - NOT GOOD

Oh, I think I misunderstood you then... I don't know man I need a break from RU for a bit :) gonna go to a bar or something lol

I never said it needs a new OLPF, read again.

When the OLPF was changed the cam needed to go back to RED to be 're-calibrated'. I believe that more than the OLPF it was the 're-calibration' that created this issue which is why I don't think a firmware update will fix it.

I could be wrong, I am just guessing same as those who see this as fixable by firmware.

I will be much happier if it is a firmware fix because then there will only be Dragon 1.0 and Dragon 1.1. Far less permutations to worry about.

Is it worth showing the ADD splitscreen as well?

I would say no, just because ADD is an additional process that many will never utilized due to speed. For the statement 2000ISO is as clean as 800ISO MX, it needs to be without ADD or any additional processing.

Another problem, another solution around the corner.

The dragon images are great, but not what a lot of people were expecting because of the original claims. With all the delays I'd have thought they'd have had time to sort this stuff out.

This is only a 2 second clip BUT it is at 6400 iso. And I think it looks pretty damn good. When the exposure is there you can do pretty much whatever you want. 320 on my dragon looks pretty darn fantastic. even 800 looks just fine. NEW OLPF DC/RG2

You shot this properly exposed with plenty of light at 320ISO... Of course you can push it and keep it semi clean. We're talking about shooting 800ISO in low light conditions, not 320ISO properly exposed and pushed. So this shot doesn't really make sense to the thread since were talking low light here. We've already established at 250 and 320 it is extremely clean.

I'd also add that if you look at your file at 100% at an ISO above 400, you will see this red noise in the blacks:

here is one with ADD, ...

pushed to ISO 4000, only backlight, from the other side a very little light from a table lamp ...

it´s very clean and nice overall, ... when we can get in this direction without rendering ADD, ...

my mac pro 8core needs just few seconds to render a still out of RC with ADD, in motion, okay, takes some time, but the results are very nice indeed ...

here the same frame with a light grading

Jarred said that he expects to see some results next week. Until then, what more can he really say?
i know that this is pointless anyway....but the camera is pretty much in v2 stage already with the new OLPF....and every small raw clip i have gotten my hands on in the last weeks has made this issue very obvious...to me at least....

- other cameras do noise reduction in the camera, ADD is a tool that can be used, why not ? saying this, of course every further improvement is welcome, but i can´t follow this panic partly, ... there will be an improvement, so, let´s wait, but when you read this here, you have the impression that Dragon produces noise that makes every picture unusable, ... i don´t think so honestly ... the other question is: are there really so different noise results of Dragons out there ? very interested in what will come from RED ...

ADD takes about 35-40 seconds per frame on my Mac Pro, how in the world can I tell a client they should wait a week for their footage to be run through ADD?

Not a viable solution.

Exactly. On my Macbook pro I tried to render out a 13 second shot with ADD and it took over 12 hours lol

It's brilliant for stills and that's how I will use it, but for video, forget it...

your client can be happy that you don´t shoot on 35mm, he would wait 1-2 days to see something ;-)

the need for ADD would be in extreme situations to save footage that is shot in bad conditions - in controlled light set ups, noise shouldn´t be an issue honestly - if you need a low light hardcore camera i would take another one, ... there are better for this ...
i don´t want to fade out the fact that there is a need for some improvement, but i shot footage in the last weeks with dragon where my clients said "wow" ...

Jan that's awesome that we're no longer risking flashing film or a developer screwing up a reel. But ADD is not a realistic workaround. It's just not. Sorry, it's a massive step backwards to propose that when the red workflow is what scares off most producers these days based on past hardships.

13 seconds = 12h, wow, that´s too long ... what set up ? footage on a raid or internal drive ?

i shot 2 weeks ago in a very dark coaster of a familypark, material needed to be pushed up to 4000, i selected those shots (11 shots from 5 seconds to 20 seconds), drag them on the internal SSD of the Mac Pro and rendered them with ADD over the night, footage was 100% useable and looked fine under this extreme conditions

you are right, but when you need ADD ? if you need it, you did not set light - again: a clean ISO2000 is more than welcome, but if you set light and exposure with all the care a professional commercial or movie demands - you should not need it or you just can use a good NR.
we have Alexa footage here from a project several cameras were used and it´s noisy too in underexposed areas ...
