  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon vs Alexa 65

The “Epic 6K Dragon Sensor Camera” has a resolution of “6144 x 3160” or 19.4 megapixels at a 1.94:1 aspect ratio and a dynamic range over 15 or 16 stops of dynamic Range, that has not been established yet! The PROPOSED “ARRI A3X CMOS” with a Sensor of, “6560 x 3102” aspect ratio of 2.11:1 Resolution, they say it’s an Aperture equivalent to 5-perf 65 mm films; it uses a lens aperture of ARRI XPL Mount 64 mm diameter! They claim that it will have over 14 stops of dynamic range; we’ll have to wait on that for this PROPOSED CAMERA. So there isn’t much difference between the two, only the bigger image sensor for the Arri. Arri has kept it current sensor, they just made it bigger, but not better and in the process they had to go with the bigger lenses, and so did the low light capabilities.

The amount of data this camera will generate will be insane.
 
OK, the “ARRI A3X CMOS” is a Monster of a Camera, its huge, can you imagine an S3D shoot with it, when you get the same performance with a “Red Dragon Sensor Camera”, can you imagine it on a Stedicam, or a tight corner, and I can’t.

I'll prefer Dragon Carbon on my octacopter. Fly ready with Voigtländer 20mm lens it just weigh 2.2kg (5lbs). Flying with a Alexa65 with 24mm lens will be up to 14kg (30lbs), and make octacopter in the 50-70kg (110-150lbs) and not practical.
 
I think Arri shot themselves in the “foot”! Here are my reasons; there could be others, “Red Dragon” “6144 x 3160” or 19.4 megapixels at a 1.94:1 34.5 mm Image Circle. ARRI A3X CMOS Camera, “6560 x 3102” aspect ratio of 2:1.1 Resolution, they say it’s an Aperture equivalent to 5-perf 65 mm films; it uses a lens aperture of ARRI XPL Mount 64 mm Image Circle. So the difference in Resolution is the same (more or less) because of adjustments for final delivery method and cropping for different mediums that currently exists. Imax, Imax S3D, the film container of DCI at 4K of 2:40.1 and 1.85:1 that is now the norm, whatever you want for transfer for broadcasts I would prefer 2:1 but that’s just me.

Arri claims, and I don’t doubted that they have over 14 Stops of Dynamic Range, the Red Digital Cinema Company is still toying with the Dynamic Range because of their final OLPF. So don’t discard what Graeme is doing, his new secret sauce, which includes the R3D REDCODE Files, which will always belong to Red, you can change them till your heart’s content.

The size of the Camera, it probably doubled in size, while their recording capability shrank in seize, one card is now 11 minutes, the same as a 1,000 foot magazine. Red continues advancing with their R3D SSD from 512 MB to 1 TB and you can easily put up to one hour of footage on it, at multiple compression rates. The Arri has become heavier by the pound, and cost the same.

I think it's wise to be openminded about cameras. I love RED, the cameras and the company. I'm an owner. But it is in my best interest to know and understand the various camera options that are available. Think about how many movies were shot with big film cameras for all those years, well before any small digital cinema cameras were available. For the types of films that will shoot with this Alexa 65mm, size will most likely not be the limiting factor. I mean think about where they have managed to get IMAX cameras. And look at the size of this beast. On The Sea of Trees we used Alexa XT and RED Dragon. Dragon was primarily used for the Movi. So, not an either or but rather going with what the filmmakers felt would best give them the shots they wanted.

In terms of large data, it's all relative to the power of your data management setup. For example, some of the Codex readers are fairly slow such as the USB 3 dock. But a Codex Vault will offload a 512GB mag in 12 minutes.
 
So expensive you can ONLY rent it.. when it ever becomes available.

As Dan said, more tools to tell stories. This looks like a great camera, and when you divorce yourself of brand loyalty and just focus on respecting all the great tools out there you can truly allow the drool to flow when looking at this new alexa.

Why Jim Jannard been so quiet, for so long and Graeme have continues to work on what? These are questions that have me thinking, I imagine the ARRI A3X CMOS Camera will be available by NAB 2015 for RENT, and what has red been working on all this time? That why I say wait till the other shoe drops.

True. Weren't there rumors of several of these cameras already being used on some features? This announcement appears more of an "official" roll out...
 
Let me put it this way; a 50 Caliber Machine Gun (ARRI A3X CMOS Camera, “6560 x 3102”) is never going to be as deadly as a Semi Automatic Sniper Rifle, ask the people that Kidnapped Captain Philips (“Red Dragon” “6144 x 3160” with R3D REDCODE)! Just saying!

its supposedly shooting two features right now...Tarzan and some other one...but all I know is rumors from tweets I read, I have no direct knowledge of this fact..

its been on projects for the better portion of the year in fact. I know this because I had a motion graphics video that used shots done on this camera, that were then transcoded over to prores, to be used in a piece for a 10k finish. The footage looked stunning. It is essentially exactly lik alexa footage...just bigger.

"Captain Phillips" was shot primarily on film, with some use of Alexa and some minor use of Red.

Yes it's three alexa sensors side by side tipped over on the edge. So same color science same everything times 3 for the sensor size and number of pixels. So knowing that it's quite easy to understand what it's capable of. Noise at a given resolution is 1/3 of regular alexa XT raw for example. It's quite a beast to say the least.
 
Well Mike no doubt you’re absolutely right! I was referring to the skill that it took for four Navy Seals to synchronize a shot on a moving platform at the same exact moment in time. That’s what the ARRI A3X CMOS Camera, “6560 x 3102” vs. the Red Dragon” “6144 x 3160” with R3D REDCODE means to me, I know that a bit farfetched, but the advancements that it took for Arri forgetting all the previous things like Image Circle, just to reach 6K, and then with its power on the Industry Press, well in MY opinion it’s a bit misguided.
