  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Ask RED, as you write, is the only way to make it go right. At this point in time there is a lot of conflicting information available.

I offer the alternative belief: I actually think it has been indicated that placing an order, and paying, for a Dragon (new or upgrade) prior to NAB means that you DO qualify. My guess is that you then CANNOT cancel that order. Perhaps it is best to get an official answer, just to be sure.

This is stated in Phil's Weapon thread: " It is possible to pay for the Dragon Upgrade and then pay-up to the Weapon Upgrade." which sort of indicates that payment is the pivotal issue in any case.

Sorry if it's already been answered but should you pay for a Dragon upgrade before NAB, or should you actually perform one in this time frame? Does paying counts as a "yes" for weapon upgrade perks? I might not be able to actually get my camera to RED before April 11th

If you confirm payment for the DRAGON Upgrade before NAB you will be secured for the $9,500 price and the perks for the Weapon Upgrade down the road

This goes straight from my bomb squad rep, thought I share it for everyone.

I thought I would offer my thoughts on what I think Weapon is. I'm guessing that it is a sensor upgrade and allows you to "TARGET" (hence the name weapon) in post the area or object that you want in focus much like LYTRO. I am also guessing that the knobs we saw (two steps forward one step back) is for changing the filters....and I might as well say lets throw in an 8k sensor to go with it. Just my humble guess.

With ARRI coming with a 6k "capability" (assuming that is sensor size rather than upscaling a smaller one) at NAB, and considering that ARRI is always at least a year behind RED's innovations, one could assume RED is releasing an 8k sensor.

But from my understanding RED had to reduce the size of the photo sites to reach 6k with the Dragon sensor. And since the general discussion has more or less ruled out a new sensor I don't think a physical 8k sensor is in the works at the present.

HOWEVER, it just may be possible RED has increased the size of the photo sites on the Dragon-sized sensor (for better low-light capability) and has adopted upscaling algorithms that can give us 8k equivalency via firmware.

I'm not totally against this as I saw fantastic results from Genuine Fractals imaging software years ago. And knowing RED, if they were to do something like this it would only be implemented if they had found a superior way to do so.

As Phil keeps saying... we are going to be surprised come NAB. And even though I have postulated the above, still, if it were true I would still be surprised.

Weapon will probably be something special for sure but I'm psyched that I have just paid for my Dragon update today. Weapon is hopefully somewhere down the line but what the hell, until then, I'm trying to take full advantage of what Dragon has to offer first. Hope I made the right decision upgrading my Epic-X...

Maybe the Weapon is something you can 'shoot Anything with' from time lapse to 600fps?

AJ

I shoot timelapse on my Dragon all the time. Now 600fps I would die for

Maybe not this time, but perhaps it's the framework that will allow such a choice
Yes, it would be strange if one suddenly only had a FF or medium format sensor. Not everyone would need or want that. I´m Happy with the size as it is, but could stretch to a FF sensor.
I assume you could crop a larger sensor, and that would be a solution the the "problem", but would´t that make the camera more expensive than it need to?

I ordered my Dragon-Upgrade. My question? Is the Fan 2.0 Upgrade included? Do you recommend the new Fan?

My epic is getting dragon upgrade as we speak. They included the top 2.0 fan with my upgrade, but I think you still have to buy the lower fan. They also include the STH OLPF and if you ask they will change that out for the low light.

Wow - that is not at all what I understood based on my preliminary discussions. Good to hear, though. Although it means I wasted money buying it. LOL

Terry,

You get the Fan Kit upgrade...both units I believe...because the bottom unit has the "Dragon" label on it vs. the "Epic" unit...which is cool. But yeah, I'm in the same boat as you though. I purchased the fan kit for my Epic, and will also get the kit when I upgrade to the Dragon...might just try to sell the Epic fan kit online when/if I finally get to upgrade to Dragon...still working on securing the funds before NAB!

So, this is my confusion about the fan. Maybe someone can clear it up.

I bought the fan kit (top and bottom) several months ago but never installed it. However, I bought one with an Epic badge because I was sure (lol) that I was going to trade in my Scarlet for an Epic. Now, however, I am just about to upgrade to a Scarlet Dragon instead. So, I asked my rep whether I could send along the brand new, unopened, bottom fan and trade it for a Dragon-badged fan bottom fan in my Dragonized Scarlet. Seems like an even trade, right? I was told that I wouldn't be able to do that; they wouldn't take the "old" (brand new) one in trade. C'est la vie.

But, if the fan kit is included, why would there even be an issue?

Terry,

My bomb rep was understanding and did a good job explaining that a lot of people were in the same boat. It's just one of those things meant to help with the Dragon upgrade. It's a bonus for those that didn't have the fan upgrade but wanted the new fan and the new sensor...but for those that already did the fan upgrade, you just kind of lost out on that bonus. It wasn't going to hurt you, for upgrading earlier on with the fans, but you just don't get the new "free" fans when you finally upgraded the camera sensor to Dragon.

You probably already know, but you'll likely just have to sell your new Epic fan kit online (which you should get top dollar for since it's unopened...at least I would hope so).

In fact there was a mistake in Red's email for the scarlet dragon upgrade. The new fan kit was in the list for the upgrade but it's not part of it in fact. Only for the epic.

Rome - I am still confused. My bottom fan hasn't been been installed yet. Are you suggesting that, if I send in my Scarlet with the standard bottom fan, that RED would normally just upgrade it in the Dragonizing process? That would certainly be great. But it doesn't explain why RED wouldn't at least have agreed to take my v.2 bottom fan back. Clearly, I am OK with that, since I can then sell it and recoup funds. But what my rep DIDN'T tell me was that they would install the new fan anyway. I was simply hoping they would provide a Dragon badge on the fan with the upgrade.

Seems like a little further discussion with RED is in order. Would love to hear confirmation from others that they all got the v.2 fan included; just for ammunition in my talk with my BS rep.

OK - I guess that explains it. Epic vs. Scarlet.
