  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

So, all prices have now gone up for every item on the Red site (in GB/EU)?

This seems a bit scary - and just in time for the Weapon/NAB pre-order & any subsequent deals.

Guess those of us in GB/EU get to pay a premium... so maybe I'll be sticking with the Dragon now (and going 3rd party for some bits and pieces) - bit of a shame really.

So RED is responsible for international currency exchange rates???

No offense to our European colleagues, but WTF? RDC made some choices over the last few years, one of which was to move assembly and some component manufacture to California, which ties pricing even more tightly to the market value of the US dollar. FWIW, over the last few years anyone getting paid in Euros has enjoyed greater buying power in the global marketplace than folks paid in US dollars - I'll be waiting by my mailbox for the thank you note… ;-)

Blair even if we did get a higher buying power (our rates are taxed a lot more then in US so this is debatable) in Europe our prices were by numbers the same as US (Macbook pro 2000usd - 2000eur and euro much stronger back then) so we were paying more at home, and buying from US wasnt a good option due to shipping and custom fees there are not that low. in my country 22% + handeling of customs procedures,... so it wasnt worth it. regular VAT in Europe is between 18-20% :/

The thing is that the price increase came so sudden. There has been a certain list price on every item for a long time in the EU store and people might have planned and saved up for some of those only to see a great increase in price just over night. There were no word of this happening. It's totally ok to change prices according to the market, but just changing the prices like that without a word stings a little. Some of us really save up to buy equipment and with all that's happening with Weapon and upgrades before NAB, this really hurts EU customers. For my own currency, the Swedish Krona, the US dollar has gone up tremendous compared to one year ago. So the prices were really high for everyone in Sweden as they were at this moment and now it's even more expensive. I couldn't give a damn about Euro, it's not my own currency, which makes buying equipment from Red UK at a higher price than from Red US a real mess.

Buying from within EU should be easy because of the European Union, but this really just makes it better to fly over to California and buy equipment straight from Red, it's cheaper for people in Sweden and you get a vacation at the same time :tongue_smilie:
 
Dragon upgrade is 10.000eur - 12.315 usd - and in us its 9500usd. 3.000usd is alot more then shipping and doing temporary import/export papers...

nice holidays in Cali for that much money...
 
Sorry guys, that is too bad that happened, especially when everyone is cramming to make the tight deadline of convert to dragon or miss out on the upgrade boat.

One question. If we put a deposit for weapon, and the euro/dollar has changed when the time to upgrade is happening, will Red keep the NAB price anyway or will they take the new price?
 
Blame the price increase on Quantum Easing, European style. The good news, your interest rates are going to get very low and money is going to flow into the economy if your version mirrors the US version.
 
Well, my LLO-OLPF just arrived. Hopefully only a few more days before the Dragon is at my door.

I understand the sudden and substantial price adjustment is hard to swallow. That said, changing the pricing on a monthly or quarterly basis would have it's own set of problems.

FWIW, I came very close to traveling to Sweden to pick up my 2002 Volvo V-70 T5 in person as there was a substantial discount and a clever program that offered airfare, 2 nights hotel and 30 days of insurance coverage that allowed one to tour the continent and then drop the car off at a port for shipping to the US. If you are adept at sleeping on planes and have always wanted to see California…

Will weapon work on the current epic quick release platform? Should be the same lense height, and bolt patterns?
 
Currencies change - prices fluctuate - and pricing structures don't always make sense.

Ask Target about their foray into the Canadian marketplace...

I don't believe that RED owes anyone advance notice about price fluctuations.
 
but it does kinda own an explenation why is there 40% difference in price. thats a lot and we are not talking in small amounts here as we all know. here in europe we are all used that US has better prices on electronics but not to that extend.
 
Not a CPA, but my assumption would be that RED ate some lost profit margin on their European sales (vs US margins) when the Euro was strong and are trying to compensate a bit for that now. They may also be looking at the trajectory of currency valuations and/or are looking for a pricing model that doesn't require constant adjustments.

Perhaps the "fairest" method would be to price everything in US dollars with all transactions in other currencies based on that day's exchange rate. It would also be the most problematic in terms of invoicing/funds transfers/order date vs shipping date adjustments/etc. Let's not forget that when RED opened their first foreign location they still had less than 100 employees and, AFAIK, had not yet moved up to enterprise class solutions for managing pricing/inventory/etc which would have made the complexities of constantly adjusting to currency fluctuations onerous.

Now to start a US backlash against the better pricing the European buyers enjoyed up until about 6 months ago… I kid, I kid

And this seems to suggest that the 6k Dragon will be upgraded first and the V,V sensor will come later.

I hope you mean quantitative easing; I'm not cool with changing the laws of physics.
