  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Finally learnt how to post pics on Red User so I thought I'll patch up a still from a test I was doing yesterday. The noise bar was half way red and I can't believe how clean the image was. Honestly I WAS IMPRESSED. And it was the skin tone filter (have tried to get the low light filter but the guys at Red told me they are all out for now). Was thinking of going Alexa for our next 2 cams but ..... Red's evil is seducing me again. I can't wait to see this sensor WEAPONISED.

Will there be a Scarlet MX to Weapon Dragon direct upgrade?

(suppose you want the Weapon, and still have a Scarlet MX. You have to first do the upgrade path to Dragon sensor, and second the upgrade path to Weapon... sending in your cam twice... could that be done in once?)

I have to say Dragon amazed me today again. Extreme low light, there was some noise, but very usable. Red you are making it almost impossible now for me to fulfil my Alexa ambitions... it might have to be Dragon Weapon all the way now. Arrrrr and I really thought it would be an Alexa this time.

So true!

If RED would stick to what they have, improving and moving forward will be hard to do.
This is all for the REDer good.
Damn I'm excited. :)
I'm excited like i was before the final announcement of Scarlet-X. :)

I'm letting that STH live in my Dragon now. Love it.

Haha. I still haven't bothered to do the swappable OLPF upgrade. The STH one works great, I originally had the first one (low light) and yes, it does allow in more light, but the STH one is superior overall, IMO. I suppose I do want the underwater one, but don't need it anytime soon. So I suppose I'm waiting patiently for RED to send me the self-install kit for the OLPF system that I ordered AGES ago it seems...

Well I just got the bolt kit I ordered at NAB last year, so don't hold your breath :D

Many people scraped enough cash together to go RED and leaving the 3CCD world of HDV behind, or so they thought. The first adopters of RED One, the first thousand or so pre-orders myself included, waited patiently hanging on to each notion of updates as the development team made dreams come true. How long did that outpouring of gratitude live on for this nucleus of supporters? Until upgrades were tabled. In the old world of 3CCD a new camera swap out each year would cost a few grand, certainly less than 10. So when people have a gripe at the duping of a client base I can see their frustration and understand where they are coming from. I'M not saying RED owes anyone anything but the tagline is simply not correct.

Um Marc, the old world of cameras at this level were more like $100K not a mere $10K or less. We were in Star Wars episode 2 and 3 price tag at 1080p. Film cameras from Panavision were rentals only. Arri and Aaton were the game if you wanted to buy a film camera.

Even the Sony Ex3 was over $10K. Perhaps you were thinking of the Sony DVX-100 or the Panasonic HVX P2 cameras - which were prosumer at best. Digital came from a Broadcast ENG world where Sony and Panasonic and JVC ruled. It's only around the last few years that DSLRs have come into play. They are not Pro Cameras. Only recently with the C300 and C500 and the latest Sony cameras like F5 and F55 are we seeing lower priced cameras aimed at the Pro market.

Good idea. Make sure to get the MiniMag option. You will need those going forward.

So Jarred means even if we still use our existing 1.8" mags after upgrading from mx to dragon for now we should go for the mini mag side module while upgrading because we will need it for the upgrade to weapon?
But we can not use the module on weapon, we just need it to be upgraded...("You will be sending in your Dragon mini mag module to be upgraded to the Weapon mini mag module... if you choose the upgrade path.")
Can´t we just go from Dragon with 1.8" SSD To weapon and buy the new media when we do the switch?

What's the current upgrade time for sending my MX in to it returning as a Dragon?

Yes you can do that. It might just likely cost a hair more that route, or not. Red hasn't stated before. However, I'm certainly sure that if your Dragon has the MINI-MAG or 1.8" SIDE SSD Module you'll be able to upgrade to Weapon. That's not going to be a "stop sign".

I would speak to your Bomb Squad Rep for more info. Based on what I'm seeing around town it sounds like once they have the camera received in hand it's in the realm of 5-10 business days. This often can change due to volume if there's a large influx of people trying to upgrade.

Pretty much exactly what goes down is the camera arrives at Red Irvine, it gets "received", inspected, if there's anything majorly wrong with the camera Red will notify you (people sometimes send Red busted cameras that need repair), if there is something wrong they and you need to tend to it, then the camera goes through the upgrade procedure, after finishing there's a round of testing and the eventual "burn in" to make sure everything is performing as expected, and they ship the camera back out to you once done.

If I had one piece of advise if planning an upgrade, I'd send the camera in on a Friday or a Monday if you have control over that, but that's just a theory based on what my friends have done in the past.

Marc, here's a different way to look at it... RED upgrades are like an assembly line with off ramps.

That is, one could have bought the R-1 and chosen to not get on the assembly line to upgrade to MX (I didn't upgrade to MX) or Epic MX (I did do that upgrade.) And the beauty of the RED system is that no matter where you are on the assembly line, you are still viable through free firmware upgrades or REDCINE X free upgrades.

There is no bad place to rest on the conveyor belt, it's just that staying on the conveyor keeps us technologically relevant.

Probably a question for someone from the RED Exchequer, but can we prepay now for at least a portion of the weapon upgrade?

My situation is that I have a cc with a 3% upfront charge and then 0 interest for like 18 months. Problem is I have to use that before some date in March. But I want to charge my upgrade to my AMEX card because that offers a free extended warranty.

So, can I make a charge labeled as a pre-payment for my upgrade(s) on my AMEX card in time to transfer the balance from my AMEX to my 0 % card?

Marc, Phil is right. Having a DRAGON is the ticket to ride, irregardless of Side SSD Module type on your current SCARLET/EPIC. Jarred has been stating for awhile that RED MINI-MAG is the future. Just like you had CF and REDMAG options for RED ONE, but only REDMAG at launch of EPIC.

Elsie, I replied back to your PM. Anyone can dump money into your RED account. We just cannot "earmark" it for future product we are not taking orders on. It will be in there, and any orders you do will debit from the balance...

Talk to your rep, I once had such an arrangement where I was charged upfront but the money was being saved into an account, much more like a wallet on my RED.com account (maybe not the right description) but its possible. My rep helped me set it up. Was saving into the account all year, trickles but it just convenient and it sure did help me pay when time came calling.

Brent,
Will we trade in or keep the RED MAGs for the discounted mini mag program?
I ask because if you guys make a thunderbolt RED MAG reader we could copy the Mini mags to the RED mags as an additional SSD back up or ideally the DP's master. It would also be good for the environment.
