  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I am just trying to work out the minimum amount to get Weaponized, from Epic-X

Dragon Upgrade US$9500
Weapon USD ???? Another 10K 15K

Can one just keep the Epic as is and have the Dragon Sensor installed in the New Weapon Body.
We had this with Redone to Epic.

Times are tough and its a difficult decision since one knows nothing about the new camera.

Yusuf, you don't need to hurry. in the next few weeks more will be known. Maybe even before NAB if we're lucky. Time doesn't run out yet. June is the cut off date for now. You can wait until NAB and make your decision then. The upgrade price for now will be the same for everyone as it seems. Getting your epic dragonized before NAB can bring you further up the upgrade line or give you some sort of credit towards buying acc. But it won't be cheaper to get to WEAPON as it stands now.

if you want the dragon update anyway, you can buy it now and hold onto your camera until NAB before sending it in.

To add to that, the existing MINI-MAG Side SSD module will be part of the weapon upgrade if you send in your dragon.

Hi Patrick, is this confirmed? I have only seen Jarred mention that people should start investing in Mini-mags from now on but no reference to the module being included in the upgrade if you already have one.

Hasn't been answered yet.
You can pay for the upgrade and not send it in before NAB. That will count as having purchased the dragon. And then you can see what's what.

Biggest problem will be that : since RED will close the MX/DRAGON upgrade line around June, how safe is it to assume you can get the WEAPON upgrade by then?! Given the fact that there will be a whole bunch of carbon upgrades first and so on, I wouldn't bet on it.
What do I mean: it's highly unlikely that having both in one go is feasible.

Hi,

I think they should have to run an Dragon Upgrade assembly line along with Weapon upgrade assembly line as lot of people from faraway countries will like to send
their camera ONE time only for the upgrade from EPIC to DRAGON and then to Weapon.....

What say ???

Alex and Phun:

You will be sending in your Dragon mini mag module to be upgraded to the Weapon mini mag module... if you choose the upgrade path.

One of these days I'll apply for a moderator opening just to put some weight to my claims. ;)

As there is a 'No XL' mentioned working with the Weapon (and this might be misunderstood read stand alone)

My understanding is:
+) the 'REDVOLT XL' batteries ARE compatible with the Weapon
+) the 'REDVOLT XL MODULE' is NOT compatible with the Weapon.

AJ

Standard REDVOLT (no XL) will work with Weapon? I love these small Batteries? :-)

Correct.

Whatever happened to "Obsolescence Obsolete"? or was that tagline upgraded too?

As many have chimed in, Red does not owe anybody anything and the fact that you can upgrade a camera that most companies would just make obsolete by releasing a new camera is pretty telling. I have not purchased a camera system prior to Red because of that main reason... that I hate having to buy a whole new camera just to get the latest features.

Red has indeed changed the paradigm for many camera manufacturers due to the fact they have to stay competitve but still, those companies are no where close to Red; try asking Sony for discounts on media just because becuase you are using the last generation technology, or Arri to drop its pricing to make an upgrade more affordable...

I haven't been drinking the Red koolaid and have been keeping mainly silent and only reading posts but I think your off-handed comment is rather brash and bespeaks of you not fully understding what kind of company Red is. Anyway, that's just my opinion, take it for what you will.

Regards,

Thanks for this! You're completley right, only the BOMBsquad is something other manufacturers don't understand.
I love RED I love the way my first purchase went, a scarlet mx went, I feld that a whole bunch of people at RED where working and thinking with me to make good choices, wich body, wich assesory's ect.

I also love everything that they want to do with Weapon. Unfortunaly it doesn't fit my timeframe. I jumped in 14 months ago, went Scarlet 4 months later Epic MX. At the moment I can't go dragon in the current timeframe we have for it. I don't blame them, they need to go on and can't send everyone an e-mail to ask if the timing is right for everybody.

Long story short.
Thanks for the 14 awesome months where support was something out of this world. I will keep using my Epic mx with pride and honour. And still, a 5 year old camera that will whoop a lot of ass.

I salute you all.

I think that it's perfect when you have a perfect design, but without complaining, there has been a lot of design choices that haven't been optimal and I think it's reached the end of the line. They redesigned the Epic/Dragon into Weapon which is supposed to be a better baseline for design. It's going to be modular, but it's probably going to be better at being modular.

Couldn't agree more....

There seems to not have been enough real modularity going into the modularity concept at first attempt.

I'm a little sad that some of my accessories seem to be useless with Weapon, but I can't get angry because technology evolves, that's just like Don Quixote yelling at wind mills.

The problem is that the 1.8" SSDs are not fast enough. Their interface is based on SATA 3Gbps and the SSDs themselves, even the fastest 512GB ones, can't even fully saturate that interface. The 128, 256 and especially the 64GB capacity ones are significantly slower. The newer 240GB ones are faster, but still fall short of the 512GB ones. So, to make these work on Weapon, we would at least need a module that can double them up and interleave or stripe data between a matched pair of 1.8" SSDs. And moving forward, that won't be enough. I don't know about you, but I also don't want that sort of headache and extra potential for failure in my acquisition media.

There is definitely a market for a way to use the older media with Weapon. Unfortunately there are also times when reality overtakes technology.

Fair points - I only use the 512GB 1.8" mags these days, so I was primarily thinking of that market. They're simply too fast, too recent and too pricey to think about binning yet.

Maybe someone can make an adapter and we can put them in a laptop as a start up disc.

So true!

If RED would stick to what they have, improving and moving forward will be hard to do.
This is all for the REDer good.
Damn I'm excited. :)
