  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I have respect for ARRI but what the heck is ARRI doing marketing their new thing as a "future proof" 4k camera?

MINI ALEXA ( ARRI RAW )

2880 x 1620 = 4,665,600 pixels

4096 x 2304 (4K 16:9) = 9,437,184 pixels

9437184 / 4665600 = 2.02 times (twice as many pixels)

49% of real 4K.

I really don't think the Alexa Mini has anything to do with RED. It's clearly not a production camera, it's a specialized body designed to enable a popular new tool, the light weight gimbal. ARRI is providing a solution to a demand and expanding their arsenal (yes i said that). Just like with the Alexa M it's creating an ecosystem to fit various needs rather then the one size fits all approach that RED has created. I don't think ARRI is worried or cares much about the owner operator market. The mini will provide a solution for big productions who want to stay on the same camera system for all of their shots.
I don't think it's purpose is to go after or copy RED, it's purpose is to keep the production that would have had no choice but to use RED or Canon for certain shots to stay with ARRI.
my 2 ¢

You're absolutly right. But you have to admit it's weird.

Why not make it 8k or 12k? If you're going to upscale go all out.

I'm waiting like everyone here, but I'm betting I could sell my Epic now and then forward those funds towards the new Arri and it would be a fair amount less than upgrading to Dragon and then upgrading again to whatever weapon will be...especially considering all the new media required. It is safe to say my DP's won't have any issues with this and might actually hug me.

I'm still very keen to know what RED has to offer in order to make an apples to apples informed decision.

What if you can upgrade to Weapon and keep your Epic Dragon? If history repeats itself, that could be very enticing...

how funny would it be if Weapon is a shoulder mount PERFECTLY BALENCED camera and Arri now offers a Red like body? oh how the tides have turned..

The Alexa Mini is not a 4K camera. We may suck at naming things but at least we are honest about our specs.... :)
So true. Hey I'm "Tscherman" but I can't stand Arri's marketing lingo
Alexa Mini 4K - 200fps - unique body design
Ich könnt kotzen ;)

Alexa mini doesn't seem to have any audio ports. So it's really a speciality camera to be had as a sidekick to the big one.

I like it: RED sells you one camera which you can outfit for different uses where Arri sells you two cameras to get you covered ;)

Pretty cool how accurate the design of Epic, and then Dragon was-is regarding new tools and techniques like gimbals and drones. From a users pov I find RED far more inspirational then Arri, but hard to deny that Arris chess-moves are incredibly well though through, and products kick ass, despite lower specs. Red seems so find the right direction years before the competitors, but Arri seems to dial in the so important details better. For me RED is leading the way and also taking a bigger risk then those that follow. This is why I like RED.

ARRI seemed to be mostly focused on developing business models like "We will say to clients what they need, cause is that what we have to sell and client will do that, cause they trust ARRI badge". Their business is like mutual fund, investment company, you know. White collar guys making big money. Cause camera is not the product they sell - they sell customer loyalty and brand. But sure they still have a few bright guys who can come up with the idea of picking up someone else design, cause it seemed to be right, and people like it. Something like that.

And business model of RED, I personally guess, is way simpler - "Let's just make fucking cool camera and let people have it."

Haha. Yes. They're selling to DP's and creative producers. Not Armed Forces veterans. Their marketing probably needs a re-think on this one.

Red are calling their new camera Weapon. Not cool. Thinking about ditching the platform and move over to Arri. Are there no limits on how bad taste you guys can go?

This reaction seems a bit out of proportion- what about cinema lingo? should we stop saying "video shoot" or "I'm shooting a commercial'? If we think about the meaning vs metaphorical reality of words, tools of art have always been weapons.

Then again, if enough people complain in a constructive way, those customers might get an option for a blank, or "red" plate for the camera.
Also, not everything has to be such a "do or die" kind of response, saying that you are going to dump all your Red gear for Arri because of a "not finalized" product name, seems like such a drastic reaction.

It's like breaking up with a husband/ wife, because you dislike their choice in clothing or music.

Lets take it down a notch, breath normally, wait for NAB and talk to your red rep then.

Carbon Fiber 0069 will transform into a Destruction Machine very soon. No reason not to love RED.

All my arguments to why i've being RED from day 00 keep standing strong.

thanks again... to me, RED is , most of all, an IDEAL, a CONCEPT.... second to that, its a f****** nice camera!
