  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Slightly narrower, slightly longer with weight distributed toward the middle rear would be nice. Maybe also elliminate the need for a 13mm baseplate for the corrert lens height and incorporate a base cheese plate with many mounting points on the body.

carbon only going forward?

I definitely expect improvements to the locations of ports on the camera. I recall Jarred's comment of "thin is in" which suggests a smaller, or at least a lighter camera. Besides new form factor, I believe they will include some improvements on 4k monitoring.

When I wish upon a star...

FF 4:3 sensor. Larger is of course nice, but that's where I am at.
XLRs (mini are ok, but xlr) with physical gain knobs
4k SDI out
Wifi 5Ghz with good range
Solid i-data and LDS implementation. Genlockable on a per-frame base with the metadata baked in the R3D
Contacts that work with my old fat fingers.
Rightside on-body camera controls
3D LUT implementation. I'd be happy if the monitor signal was based on ACES proxy + LUT
Different LUTs on different outputs.
Frame accurate "per frame" precises Gyro readings.
Lower compression available for film and stills formats.
Just to mention a few...

Minimag's are slower than SD cards (write speed 250MB/s) and more expensive.

You are both not correct about the maximum write speeds on the MINI-MAGs. I download them faster than that via USB 3.0 if that's any consultation. Usually in the 235MB/s range. Writing through the SSD Module and likely the new module are faster than that as well.

There also needs to be some overhead for data security/stability for Red proprietary data writing to ensure things are going where they need to go.

It's already done. Price will go back to $9500 on Monday and you guys can do your thing.

This is what family does... love and war and fist fights in the backyard but it all comes from a good place and usually ends up in a good place.

Thanks a lot. I missed the Deadline in December because of private reasons in the family. Now I am able to do the upgrade.

We are taking about write speed not read speed. If you go to RED's site http://www.red.com/tools/recording-time and choose dragon mini mags 6k 24fps 4:1 REDCODE you will see that they can write 177MB/s. They are to slow. This is the reason why i will not buy the mini mag's and the mini mag's ssd module and any new body that uses this card's. I am waiting from RED to make faster card's. It is out there all ready from other manufactures. We have the best camera so we need the best card's to support it.

People forget that the SSD cards are probably MLC instead of SLC.
MLC is much more secure and can be read and written much more than SLC. The SLC is the type that's commonly used in computers today, but MLC is for secure handling of data and is super expensive to manufacture. The speeds are sometimes slower. I do not want a SLC or lesser secure way of capturing my footage. If mini-mags cost so much because they are MLC then so be it, it's far better than the alternatives.

Arri amira use CFast 2.0 cards 440MB/s write speed. They are secure if arri use them and i don't care if they are MLC, SLC or what ever. The technology is out there so RED must use it.

Is the sensor and internal electronics of the Amira actively using the max speed of the cards?

I got the RED ONE at a great price with a lot of accessories because I put down my deposit on #329 while the camera was still silver. Jim said "Trust me"
I had faith
Jim and Jarred then announced EPIC and they gave me back every cent I paid for the RED ONE body towards the upgrade.
I had faith.
When Dragon was announced, Jarred offered me the upgrade for 1/3 the cost of the new camera.
I had faith.

Now RED is telling me that they have another wonderful upgrade and I will not be sorry. Yes I have the old SSDs.
But I still have faith.

RED is my family. The only company I have been loyal to for a very long time. They have taken care of me, they have broken rules for me. They have made exceptions for me and made me feel special even though I'm just a single guy making little things.

I am very excited about the upgrade and I stand ready to move.

We must never forget. Camera companies do not upgrade. Had this been anyone else. Those of you with EPICs (Like me) would have had to pay $31,000 for a new camera. Not $9,500.00

April cannot get here fast enough.

Jarred, I'm regularly amazed by how far you go to give Red customers the best upgrade path possible. (Lest anyone reading this is bad at math, if there are 1,000 Epic/Scarlet owners out there who take advantage of this, Jarred just gave you $3 Million.) Anybody who ever questions your motives ought to think about that.

And I'm not saying that because I'm benefiting from it. Despite the fact that 2014 was not the best of years financially, I found the money for the upgrade to Dragon last year for one simple reason: it's my work, and every camera advancement from Red since my Red One #172 has improved my work. And the value of that has been well beyond the cost.

Jarred whats gonna happen to people who listened you and upgraded before Dec 1st? The guys who played by rules.

Even though it hurt a little, I actually appreciate the gentle kick in the nuts. That Dragon is one seriously awesome camera. Loved my Epic before and I thought I didn't really need Dragon, which to some extend might've been true. It might sound cheesy, but it is helping me push my career into a much better place. The tonal range of the Dragon is so homogenous giving me far better skintones than before and on some of the budgets and schedule I'm working with, that's a HUGE win!

...I'm turning 50 this year. Had my money all set for the middle age crisis Harley Davidson 1800cc and now you do this shit to me?!?!?! WTF MAN!!!... My wife thanks you.

I could dig through the endless pages of this forum looking for an answer, but Will a SCARLET Weapon, be different than an EPIC weapon?

I have the same question - would love to know.

And, in a simialr vein, will the upgrade price to Scarlet Dragon also drop back to $9500 until NAB?

A custom or blank front logo would probably solve as much of this nitpicking as possible. Charge $1,000 for custom, $250 for blank (you'd think that would save money but it probably throws a kink in their lines to do something different).

Jarred,

I'm assuming this price drop is applicable to ALL Dragon upgrades; Epic->Dragon AND Scarlet->Dragon, correct?

What I don't understand is why make the upgrade a two step process? What is the big hurry to get something new out? I think Red should take their time and make a product that is ready to be rolled out complete. I am in no hurry to upgrade my Dragon, I would prefer to wait to do the body upgrade, when the sensor is ready... upgrade both at once. Then there is less downtime shipping the camera back to Red and the firmware/color science will have the bugs worked out.

I know they have not released any specs so maybe there will be a reason to upgrade but at this point my opinion is you are putting the cart before the horse.

Greg, you don't have to upgrade your current Dragon. But you are eligible to do so at anytime you choose. Perhaps there is a cut-off date for getting the price reduction, but other than that you will be able to do so when you want.
