  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

It's not a bad suggestion but wasn't there ample time on this? Tons of warning as well?

I don't really have a dog in this race as I'm not planning to upgrade, but I don't totally agree with this statement. The fact is that that the Dragon roll-out was hugely messy and took far longer than I think anyone expected it to. From the re-work line at NAB to "DEB" to stumbling onto the concept of swappable OLPFs as a fix to a litany of complaints, the whole thing really did not give me a good feeling about Dragon in general until just before the cut-off. For guys that do not follow RU and the latest updates I suspect it was even worse. For future upgrades it would be nice if the product was fully baked before the upgrade cut-off timer was started. I totally appreciate the upgrade options Red has offered but to say that we had tons of time is just not accurate for me.

I mean, that's fair but I had a totally different experience. Loved the Dragon from day 1 despite those minor issues. It's capable of delivering some mind blowing footage.

Also, you KNEW the price would be going up for a lot longer than two months. The date might not have been set but that doesn't mean you can't count all of that as warning time.

For less? First 65mm Digital Cinema camera out and nothing changed.if do you think weapon would affect cine glass prices in future i would pay your pl glass half price next year.
I just dont believe medium format is for the masses.sure im gonna upgrade it too but what else? Dont own or intend to buy medium photo glass in future.
It takes time and money adapt those glass to cine version and even after that its still not cinema glass.
@Luke sorry dude i already own Dragon and %100 upgrade to whatever the next one is.Red ecosystem :)

Personally I would take a medium format dragon with a little set of shitty 100USD per lens medium format lenses straight from ebay before a normal dragon with a full set of master primes, but maybe that's just me. The trick question is how to find good anamorphic's for that format, I read Hawks is only going to rent out their sets.

Jupp but also another question is what will the price drop for current dragon and MX will be when the new camera is out. possibly RED does another 50% price cut, that would really stir the market I think.

Does anyone have the number to REDUsers Anonymous?

The RUA group has been terminated. They were interfering with my obsession.

Anyway, can't wait to get weaponized! I made the transition to the mini mags when I upgraded to Dragon -- wow, it's been a whole year! That transition was kinda painful, but I have not regretted it one bit.

It seems a shame to send off the Dragon so soon to get re-worked into a new camera. Mine is still in pristine condition with rather few hours on her. But let's do this! Would send mine in today if I could, just because of.. reasons.

@Ryan

Hahaha Panavision is not releasing a Digital Camera anytime soon.

Those rumors are over 3 years old. Their engineers can't keep up with all the new cameras.

I would consider it Vaporwear no matter what the preptech tell you at Panavision.

They've been keeping the hype but never deliver

Just guessing (based on past performance) but I'm thinking it may be 8-10 months (optimistic, I know) before cameras start shipping in numbers to the early-opters.

I doubt they will kill the market for the old stuff right away. A good heads up on that inevitable price drop would be generous of them and more than you could expect from any other company.

At this point I would personally stop the upgrade thing. Not worth the hassle. Make everyone just buy a new camera and sell their old one like everyone else. The funny thing is...REDs reputation would probably benifit from it AND there would be 50x less confusion. Most of what I see is an awesome new camere being tainted by specifics of the uograde path. Probably a huge downer for Jarred after being so stoked about it that he finally spilled some beans. It's a shame and it kind of ruins the fun.

Hey just to be clear, I'm not complaining about the upgrade path. I'm happy one exists at all. Actually I am on the same track you are in this regard -- I will likely buy a new camera rather than send in a bunch of parts to get modified. My mini-mag is only 1 year old, ditto the brain. I'll either keep them or sell them and just buy the new system when it becomes available. I'm $3k closer to that making sense anyway, thanks to Red....

Surprised RED hasn't just gone with third party distribution at this point. Its frustrating that their awesome work gets torn down by these (fairly petty) delivery and pricing specifics.

To get HFRs and good SNR ... a bigger light-gathering sensor would certainly could in handy. :)

If that was the 'case - wouldn't the proportions of the Weapon be a smidgen wider, and less deep?

AJ

I'm pretty confident that "Weapon" alludes to a built-in sidewinder tool. The fan removal is the new compartment where the tool will be stored. That will eliminate any need for carrying multi-tools to set, a nearly 2.5% decrease in time necessary to build the camera up.

Really I just hope it is a Medium Format sensor upgrade for the dragon and not some badass lighter weight, low light, higher frame rate upgrade. Would save me the time, energy, and money of having to sell off my Epic MX to buy the Weapon. Although I guess its inevitable that this upgrade will happen for me at some point so why not now. Either way, love the name, and stoked that Red keeps pushing the limits of cameras that capture truely beautiful images.

All I know is I have Red Butterflies right now. Keep doing what you guys do, you rock Jarred!

I do have a question will the camera body be an entire new chassis? Will my 1.8 side ssd be upgradeable...like some type of credit if sent in with the camera? Just curious thanks for the love!

Just to recap where we are because the beans seem to be spilling from multiple places at the moment.

Red Dragon Weapon Upgrade.
