  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Upgrades ...

Jarred,
I'm patient, as always. It was 18 months from deposit to delivery on Epic... I'm sure I can last a couple more months for Dragon! :)

And just let me know how I can help...

Frankly I don't think anyone thought that of you.

Exactly. I really doubt anyone was thinking that of you, John. At least, I can speak for myself and say I wasn't.

I have always felt RED's business ethics were noteworthy, and love the way they treat everyone on an even playing field. RED doesn't get too moved by the idea of "celebrity" for celebrity's sake. It's a company run by genuine people, with genuine motives. At least that's what I have seen. So please no fanboy comments or thoughts, I give my love and praise only when it is EARNED. And these gents have done it again. And again.

Anyway, I figured the individuals who ended up with cameras ahead of the curve were likely instrumental to their dev in some fashion -- just as Jarred confirmed. And it was just really nice of him to say so, when he does not need to.

Meritocracy is such a nice idea in practice.

And the rub is: some celebrities are who they are for a reason. Not all, but definitely some. ;)

Congrats, RED.
Can't wait for next year's movies. Should be a sight to behold!!

4K info

4K info

Hi Jarred,
I have a possibly n00bish, but noone seems willing to answer. I'm hoping to can help. It requires a bit of setup, so please bare with me.

Now, one thing I've noticed about the MX sensor is that I can shoot in fairly low light at 4K and get a pretty clean looking image. The noise is there, but the photocites are so small that the grain doesn't become too distracting. However, when I shoot in the same conditions at say, 2K, I'm essentially zooming in on the noise and creating an unusable image.

My question is: will shooting 4K or 3K on the Dragon in low light be far cleaner than 4K on the MX? I know that shooting 6K on Dragon will be cleaner than 4K on MX, but I want an apples to apples comparison. Most of my stuff will continue to be shot in 4K when I get my Dragon and greater light sensitivity is HUGE for someone who doesn't always have time and/or money to bring in a lighting crew.

Normally, when I'm shooting with limited access to lighting, I'll use my Sony NEX-FS100U. That little camera has amazing sensitivity, but the overall image quality can't hold a candle to Red. I'm hoping the Dragon will be my new low-light shooter

This is great news, thanks to everybody on the RED team. It really is amazing that we have this opportunity to essential purchase a new camera. RED's philosophy is why we purchased our EPIC last year and we cant wait to breathe hot DRAGON FIRE!

Congratulations! ... and I loved to read the "behind the scene" information (why the three were chosen), so nice to see people supporting Dragon.

I might sound like a fan-boy, but I stop by in the forum mostly directly after using my Epic and -- yes -- I'm pretty happy to work with it. I can't wait to be able to order my "update".

To everyone who has a Dragon already: Enjoy!

Thanks Jarred for the great news!

So when you see Guys like Phil , or Evin, or Toia get bumped up later next month, it's because they deserve a little nod. We love you all.. and wish we could do everyone at the same time, but we just havn't figured out how to do that yet :)

Oh man. Just wrapped today on a shoot with Dragon up on a Steadicam with super saturated lighting (and also being shot in an oven). Great looking material. Now coming back from that and reading this you've certainly got me excited.

Love you guys too. And Reduser as a community and tool.

I'm ready for this Dragon. You guys keep making the tools I want to work with and I'll keep working with them :)

Its not the high profile stuff.. its all about people.

Yes Michael Bay and David fincher are big dogs.. but Bay spent alot of time with us on making some of our new accessories work better , And Fincher comes in almost every single week and helps with various pieces of development.

John Marchant is in that first 3 not because he is a big name, but because he has donated a ton of time working on the Monochrome and with Graeme on the underwater colorimetry and various other things leading up to the Dragon.

These are the guys that don't just make money using the tools.. they give up time from their incredibly busy schedules to help us make the tools better.. Everyone wins when that happens. We don't pay any of these guys anything, and they all buy their own cameras, so letting them use the cameras they help develop right out of the gate is the least we can do.

Matthew Libatique is another great example. Yes, he is a big dog, but The new exposure tools that give you 50% grey along with sensor clip and lows was developed by him. The guy is always shooting but yet he comes in on his down days and spends hours and hours with us to make things better.

Every one of these cameras you see going out early has a similar story. So don't feel bad if your number is low or you think you should be next and you see someone else out there swinging around a Dragon... its the only way we get to reward the guys that really make a difference and push us forward.. ultimately making the camera that you do end up getting that much better.

Wish there was a LIKE button on reduser. This post would get mine for sure...

As much as I can't wait for a dragon, I'm not thrilled about giving up my MX! That being said, sign me up...

This.

I don't like to consider myself a fanboy. But there's no one else right now that seems as forward thinking, as open to (smart) suggestion, as communicative with the users of all levels, making products that are as indestructible and versatile and adaptable.

That alone is enough to take my money. Add on now what looks like it could be the best sensor in the industry? You're making it harder for me to convince people I'm not a fanboy.
