  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Upgrade Update - Epic-X upgrades and Dragon Epic-M orders begin to ship

Just wondering mine has been in for olpf swap for over a month now... any estimate when I can have it back, been asking my bomb squad but he can not give me a time frame. I'm loosing money by the day here as I need to rent camera in the mean time. If I would have known that it would be so long I could have bought another epic for the time spent on rentals :(

Edit: to rephrase, our OLPF swap has not taken over a month. We had XL battery issues and that lead to broken pin in the back of the camera and to fix those pins and have the swap of olpf has been over a month. But the Irvine office contacted me today and told me we have it back soon.

I thought the old->new OLPF was user-installable. Also, logic would tell us that if RED initially didn't get that many DRAGONs out the door last year, then there shouldn't be too many old OLPFs to replace. So how long before all old OLPFs can be replaced?

once we send our epic-x for dragon upgrade should we put with side ssd module? if there are old use marks scratches dusts all over the camera, after the upgrade dragon would return like brand new cam?

That does not seem right, Bjorn. Let me check on that.

Yes, needs side SSD module so we can engrave DRAGON on there. No, we won't do an cosmetic clean ups. The only parts that will look new will be parts we replace during upgrade.

So stoked on my upgrade. Notification just came. Epic x 2756. F yea

I don't spend much time here anymore so excuse me if this is a dumb question. So "Early adopter" means someone who placed their pre order for Dragon after NAB early not someone who bought in early on the Red One way back? Not trying to be salty just genuinely curious.

i have epic x 1780,

i placed my upgrade order within minutes of receiving
the email last year- but a technical issue happened
where it said i had no dragon upgrade path, so
my bomb squad had to redo the order by hand
and that only got registered by april 17th,

but now owners who have much higher (in the 3000' range)
in serial numbers seem to be
getting their notifications and I still havnt heard anything...

so now i worry that if there is an another upgrade
in the future, im suddenly waaay higher in serial numbers,
which doesnt seem quite fair.

Sidney, serial numbers have been irrelevant for a long time. RED decided to make order time stamp the only criterion for upgrade priority (within certain eligibility tiers) not long after NAB 2013.

Check post #46.

"early adoptors (people who ordered RED ONE before we started shipping them)"

Just to be clear, are new Scarlet Dragons shipping before early/current Scarlet owners get their chance to upgrade? If so, why is that?

Correct, new scarlet dragons ship out before upgraded scarlets do.
Not looking to make a big stink, but that doesn't seem too fair. Someone who just ordered one gets one before people who ordered an upgrade about a year ago? I'm surprised I'm the first to comment on this. Oh well as long as I get mine in the next few months.

I'm wondering if RED want to penetrate the market sooner than later with the scarlet Dragons. $14k is pretty enticing and the sooner they get these out to compete with the BMs and Cions, the better.

However to benefit from Early Adopter status or Epic M priority you had to order in the 2 days before ordinary Epic X owners could order their upgrades. The place in line is based on the time of upgrade order.

Sounds like RED has changed their strategy with regards to obsolescence obsolete, the one thing that really made me feel secure in holding onto my now infrequently-used Scarlet. It seems unprecedented for RED to put brand new buyers ahead of long time owners of the same product, no? Looks like RED is obsoleting their own un-obsoleteable product. I guess it's finally time to sell my Scarlet.

Makes sense. Personally, however, I don't think it is very fair either to Scarlet owners that have chosen the Scarlet D upgrade, especially after the long delay.
In the same way Epic-X Dragons new camera orders follow Epix-X Dragon upgrades, I think Scarlet upgrades should operate under the same logic.
For the first time ever, I am seriously considering canceling my upgrade. I really appreciate RED ramping things up, but everything regarding Scarlet upgrade still feels unclear to me. And no, I don't want an Epic X :)

Anyways, happy that the Dragons are finally starting to fly. Congrats to all those lucky bastards :)

Cheers

The $5k price difference between a brand new Scarlet Dragon and the upgrade price + the brand new Scarlets shipping sooner seems like a no-brainer to just sell your Scarlet for $3k and buy a new Scarlet Dragon. You can probably make up the price difference in a couple months (should be easy enough).
