That would be priority 2.1. The only dragons that jump the line is the Carbon Dragons... which are still rolling through production at a healthy rate.

All I gotta say to this picture...

Well damn. I know that picture is of Carbon Dragons, but all I see is temptation.

I've locked up my cell phone to keep me from calling the bank.

Well - I'm ready to reshoot this Chinese Water Dragon (from this morning's sessions) on a DRAGON. And of course everything else.... on the shot list.

A few tidbits:

* "Early adoptor" as far as the DRAGON upgrade priority was RED ONE-based. That is, you placed a deposit on a RED ONE before Aug 31, 2007 that you took delivery of. These are the people who took the leap of faith to get in line before we had started shipping cameras.

Whenever I ear talking about early adopters I remember and regret perfectly those days (well before end of Aug 2007). I wanted so bad that "scam" camera. But I didn't have funds.
Today I smile, thinking I just wrapped one of the bigger set I DPed. A short movie for Dolce & Gabbana. Starring Bianca Balti and her daughter. And my little Scarlet worked like a charm, as usual.

I'm kinda wishing I would've ordered Carbon Dragon the second it was announced… I'd probably would've had it by now and could have just whored the thing out to every shooter in town and paid her off already. Heh.

…and that's coming from a guy who doesn't do rentals, but has his phone ringing with people asking if I have Dragon yet.

At night, mostly late at night after a good day of working on camera related things, I stare longingly into a mirror searching my voidish pupils and ask why I haven't yet.....

Also coming from a guy who doesn't do rentals, but looks like I might be depending on how this evening's reflection goes.

Yes, paying off quickly on the tools we buy is key. Or you are a collector :-)

Any new collection offers from Jim?

Cheers,
Axel

Very nice.

So that's a Chinese Water Dragon? I thought they were these HUGE mythical creatures? Also refereed to as Golden Dragons I believe.

My guess is that you haven't because there isn't really a good business case for it. The MX is a very good sensor. Dragon is better, but will it really make you enough more money to amortize $40K before you'd get the upgrade anyway? Is there work you'd get with Dragon that you're not going to get otherwise? Probably not. I'm betting people hire you for what you know, not what sensor your camera has. And you're a busy guy; rentals take time. If the business case was there, you'd have done it before now.

On the other hand, carbon is sexy, and we're all drooling over the Dragon's noise floor and dynamic range. And if you get it, it'll feel special in a way that Scarlet and Epic never did. If you can pay for it, go for it. You'll love it. If you can't pay for it, don't. It'll keep you up nights, and the upgrade is right around the corner.

Double edged sword and good points. I think I could have the camera paid off fairly quickly actually. In terms of not getting work, no, I don't feel that. I do feel that having one though means that camera is working and likely often for the reasons Jeff mentioned.

People tend to hire me for a bazillion things. Last week I had a day of shooting for some VFX plates on a spot and 3 days of pre-production artwork to do on a film I'm not shooting or on the camera team on. Bizarre, but par for the course over the last 3 years. I might have to flip a switch and be a total full time DP/Director and ditch the other stuff in 2014 to meet my personal career goals.

The bigger reason I haven't jumped is that I've allocated funds as part of my "game plan" with the Epic to Dragon upgrade and have purchased and need to purchase a few other things. I've been kitting hard. Epic Carbon Dragon was a surprise for me. A surprise for a lot of us. I know 3 DPs I've spent time on the phone with going over the pros and cons of the carbon brain and they all made the jump. Maybe it's their fault and heck I probably even talked them into it in the first place!

In terms of it keeping me from shooting. No, my Epic with Mysterium-X is rad and my primary camera. It's gonna be good for UHD work for some time and that's not the issue really. I do have a few personal projects that I will actually be holding off on until Dragon arrives that's my choice. That's not something I would normally do or recommending doing, but these are things I'm producing and from what I've experienced first hand on a variety of levels with Dragon it makes me feel like I want to use that medium on these. Mostly due to what the camera has now become in terms of format size and few other areas.

December is coming. Sensors are coming in. December-March are going to be big Dragon delivery months leading up to NAB. I'm a patient man and I'll be just that. I've been more than fortunate to test out the Dragon prior to it's release to really see what it can do in a few different situations. We even used it on a couple of actual shoots. I'm extremely thankful to Jarred and Red for allowing me to do that and share images here for that matter. I've just had a taste and I like it. And I'm hungry for more because I know what I can do with it.

That's exactly why I pulled the trigger a long time ago:)

A few tidbits:

* Notifications for the upgrade will be based on pre-order date/time stamp. Once we are at your spot in queue, you will get the email saying we are ready to accept your camera. Does not matter if you are ordering an M or X as far as that goes.

Any idea when you'll start sending out emails? aren't the parts arriving any day now?

* Correct, EPIC-M priority was the window of about 3 days during NAB when only people who owned Ms, the aforementioned early adoptors, and people who has taken delivery of an X in the 30 days leading up to NAB.

* Also, don't assume this is the last opportunity where M owners will get priority on something. And there will also be special offerings for carbon fiber owners as well in the future.

Hope that helps.

If this is the case I should be receiving two of those notices but nothing yet...willing and able to get them into Red. If anything comes up where I need to shoot while they're getting Dragonized I still have my old faithful: R1 MX 1379!

Note Jarred's original email. Not Dec 1 yet, hehe.

Once we get them in and begin validation on them, we will be able to set blasting schedule. Trust me, we want to get them to you as badly as you want them.
