Dragon Update

I agree this is a crucial release for Red moving forward. My only concern is since we are not seeing ANY footage from it yet it must be VERY far off from actual release which is a bummer but if thats what it takes for them to do it right, so be it.

I honestly think the NAB dog and pony upgrade show did Red a disservice by hyping up something that was so far off from actual release..that said .Im sure they felt it was needed to keep Red in the conversation as more companies come out with great 4k options but it did give the false impression that Dragon was close which obviously its not.

Im really looking forward to what Red has in store.

We need to have patience.

In my humble opinion, RED is facing its most important release ever. Now there are many 4K cameras and 4K sensors around.
Before, with no (or little) competition, there was some leeway for incomplete releases, improvements down the road, continual color science updates etc

Now, with so many great options out there, a successful Dragon sensor out of the box is critical!

I personally want RED to take their time and deliver a winner right out of the box. They need time to make sure the launch is 100% successful.

I'm fine with waiting for RED to get things right with the Dragon, but I'd rather be shooting with an Epic this Summer and Fall until the Dragon is available, if that's the time frame they're looking at. Either way, I would love an update so I can make some decisions going forward!

I totally agree Dragon is hugely important to the future trajectory of Red. They caught the big guys, the legacy guys, off guard before, and put them in catch-up mode. They either have, or are pulling up quickly in the review mirror. If Dragon can be better where we expect it, and improve on some of the things where the competition has more recently done better, Red will be way out ahead. If they don't, they will slip. Take your time, Red. Get it right. Being quiet may be a competitive advantage at this point.

This.

As of last week with a brief visit to Red Studios Hollywood I can say that I've seen Dragon up and running sitting on a dolly and staring me down. Didn't get time to "play", but I did see it up and running in glorious 6K. As Jarred mentioned, certain bodies are being upgraded, however they aren't going to release the Dragon before it's really ready for daylight.

This of course is a point of frustration for many, however, there are a lot of positives if you consider the possibilities of how much can be done "right". I've put funds aside and have decided to go with Epic Dragon when it becomes available and basically I'm not touching that cash. It's Dragon money and that is the camera I do want to buy. There really isn't anything else being offered by anybody that is comparable in reality.

This is a industry milestone camera and will be around for a while. There's every reason in the world for Red to take there time here. And there's every reason in the world for all of us to desire one as much as a drowning man wants air.

Believe me. I want to breathe as much as the rest of you.

Wait....Phil are you saying you saw footage??

I'm saying I saw the camera on and running. It was a quick tease. Nothing shot, nothing off loaded. What I did see is a working camera that I want when they are done pimpin' it out.

Phil you saw nothing..... shhhhhhh......

You tease so good Jarred!

Like I said, Im looking forward to what Red has in store with Dragon, I think you guys are gonna blow us away.

So Phil,

Are you buying a new Epic Dragon - i.e., the $24K version, previously listed, vs. the currently, more expensive Epic-M Red Dragon, for $29K? Didn't sound like an upgrade for you.

Thank you very much

Fury

I bet that "nothing" will turn into something big! ;-)

I'll be going to upgrade to Epic-M Dragon when it's ready. I'll be going to Epic-X soonish as I have shoots coming up that need high res/high speed.

Eventually I'll have two Epic-M Dragons in my fort. With the possibility of three if everything goes just right.

Hi Phi,

Thanks for the reply. Is your understanding that the Dragon upgraded camers are going to be, hardware identical to a de novo Dragon camera? This has been queried several times, but can't find a recent, clear answer.

Brand new cameras won't feature the "skeleton base" of the camera brain that you turn in. Meaning if you are upgrading from say Epic or Scarlet to Epic Dragon your Side SSD Module for instance will remain, but with the additional laser engraved Dragon logo on the side. This is what's been known since NAB 2013. I imagine something similar will remain true for Scarlet Dragon upgraders and their Scarlet-X cameras today.

As to exactly what components get swapped out and what stays, I have no idea.

Performance-wise, Epic-M Dragon and Epic-X Dragon should be identical.
