  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update + A.D.D.

BTW.. God bless Compressed RAW aka .R3D.

Its so awesome to be able to go back to old Dragon footage already in the can and long forgotten about and be able to bring it back to life with the new stuff.

When Adobe went from LightRoom 3 to 4 . . . the sliders became magic wands with my old Hasselblad and Phase RAW files. There are several shots from New Zealand that were exposed for the brightest clouds leaving the understory tree shadows seemingly plugged black - now I am able to dig out color and detail from those deep shadows.

When the bit depth is there then each release from RED or Adobe unlocks tone that is trapped in the image. Eric Chan is doing amazing things up there with the ACR algorithms as Graeme is doing at RED.

Dragon has serious bit depth and DR - the rest is going to be the ever improving RAW converters . . . making archiving an important discipline.

Still don't understand why it wouldn't work on MX .r3ds then... I understand if it doesn't work *as well*, but isn't the underlying compression/raw data (and therefore everything down the line from that) the same?

My theory... it is optimized for Dragon because (1) there are so many more (smaller) pixels to use for interpretation (2) this requires a complete new project to do the same thing for MX, and (3) it is only natural to assign more personnel to optimize the latest platform (Dragon).

Just my attempt to bring order to the universe. '-)

David, not sure I understand. What do you mean with 72DPI?
The DPI setting for an image is just meta data, just like iso in an r3d file. If you want any other DPI you just change it. It got nothing to do with the quality of the picture it's just a number that tells your printer how big you want your image to be when it lands on a paper...

RCXP sets the DPI to 72 as that is an old standard value for images made for screens. Old Flames and other programs got difficulty reading tiffs at any other DPI than 72.

Yeah,
I mean that still exports from RCX open at a default to 72 dpi, screen resolution which Jarred explained in our exchange in the thread. But the number has no meaning and can easily be changed to 300dpi for I print in Photoshop. I was just always wanting an r3d snapshot to default at 300 when opened in Photoshop but that is controled by Photoshop not by the r3d.

72 for working in motion 300 for working with stills.

All good now. :)

It would be nice to have been playing with a Dragon for so long that your footage is long forgotten :-)

... I'm a 24 fps guy - hate 30, 48, 60 etc. :)

I have been thinking about this ... turning it over in my head a bit ... and it could be a REALLY BIG #%@*ING DEAL if it does what I think it does. Counting the seconds to test ....

Mark, I hope you can put aside your disdain for 48 fps timebase and test that footage using ADD. Your take in that regard would be useful, especially knowing you prefer 24 fps.

But ideally, ADD gives 24 fps footy a new presence that perhaps in a way emulates 48 fps in some respect or another. I'm probably putting too much hope in what ADD can do, but until proven otherwise...

A.D.D footage doesn't look different.. it just looks better.

And I am with Mark. If A.D.D made 24fps look like that emulated high fps stuff that all the new TVs seem to ship with then I would probably jump off a bridge.

Good to know Jarred, about the footage just looking better.

And I can see why any 48 fps tv interpolation might push you off the bridge... still, I think 48 fps done right will be something we grow to love over time. '-)

Jarred,

good to have you interacting so much these past few days, feels like old times. :)

i have a question on dragon color science. Since day one all the footage has looked better with every new science applied. Like the other day I was looking at some of the first stuff I shot on red one m and it just popped with rc3/Rlf

Will the the new science help old footage as well or is it just different from dragon going forward?

Any one knows how the trash can would handle A.D.D and if A.D.D would be in the SDK so reslove and premier would have the function.

Color science will help everything.. both with A.D.D. and without. New footage and old. Just like RC2 and RC3 helped everything out before them.

Thanks.

Yeah.. 6 months ago people were pretty happy with the Dragon if you can remember.

If we were a "normal" company we probably would of stopped there and took the list of things that still could be better and saved it for a new camera.

Saved A.D.D. Saved the new OLPF. Saved all the new calibrations and tweaks for both software and hardware.

But the IR flare thing has pissed me off forever. The moment we had it beat.. I wasn't going to let that one linger. Plus Graeme had the chance at that moment to add his tweaks to the new OLPF to make the color o so much better and man has that made a difference. Easy decision.

Seems simple to understand... just keep making things better. Isn't that why we are all here?

Easy Decision for me to go RED! Way to go Jarred!

Great

Great

We are running OLPF updates alongside the normal DRAGON update line just downstairs from where I sit. You will get notice via email blast when we are up to your spot in queue for OLPF update.

Going as quickly as we can, but all the logistics of sensor upgrades, OLPF updates, etc, it's a lot of moving parts.

Super++++++
