  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update + A.D.D.

I'm not Mark but, it might be because its easier to build custom cheap fast windows render farms.

Probably right. And more difficult to customize a mac for single workstation users, I guess.

I hope someone will try and determine what combination of CPU/GPU will best optimize for ADD as soon as possible. I apparently got parts to buy and a machine to assemble in order to maximize this new ADD.

Can't wait for them to release a new MULT in the future. Perhaps they will even release a SUB or DIV version for the Scarlet Dragons. '-)

you can render farm macs but its so expensive, and you probably wouldn't want your new MAC Pro dual gpu main station tied up for week up. If ADD is superduper CPU intesive, you are probably better off haveing a 16 core or 24 core? server PC from tiger direct running RCX in the closet cranking out frames.

It's much easier and cheaper to get a lots of CPU power in a PC as opposed to Apple's limited choices. Dual processors, overclocking, etc. etc.

You can roll a custom PC that destroys the new Mac Pro with respect to CPU (and GPU) power for less and there are now Thunderbolt 2 motherboards out like this guy - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...28676&ef_id=UqhTtQAABJW7HsnP:20140216001638:s

When I saw the price for the fully loaded new mac pro - my immediate reaction was - for pretty much the same money - you buy a maxed out MacBook Pro AND roll a killer Windows PC with PCIe slots.

Awesome news Jared. I love ADD already and I haven't even seen a photo from it.

So......when can we see ADD photos etc.? Sorry, had to ask the obvious.

Wow! even has native 4k capability through the HDMI port using onboard Intel graphics. I'm guessing that HAS to be HDMI 2.0 capable. Plus TB2! That board should remain relevant for at least 18 months!

Do you see ADD as a way to pull information (I'm talking small {lazy} crew Indie here) from footage shot without using the (exposure) methods you described for maximizing image as discussed in your Truth or False Color thread?

Will ADD be accessible within the NLE (i.e. when source settings is pulled up) so that it comes as a post edit operation rather than pre? If not, will RCX accept XML (as a request)?

I wonder if some enterprising Red user would ever consider selling such custom systems with Red-optimized build--to-order options for those of us who have NEVER used a Windows machine.

if we ( colorist ) we get some dragon footage . is there a way to tell if is new or old OLPF/CALIBRATION ?
i mean the metadata?

thanks

I don't really understand the question - but ADD is not going to help you with exposure. It's going to help you with detail and image fidelity in post processing.

Regardless of what debayer you use - you want to get a proper exposure so the sensor captures the detail you want to capture.

I'm guessing that HAS to be HDMI 2.0 capable.

There's a lot of mis-understanding of HDMI 2.0. You DON'T need HDMI 2.0 for 4K. HDMI 1.4 supports 4K up to 30fps - you need HDMI 2.0 if you want 4K framerates higher than 30. I'm a 24 fps guy - hate 30, 48, 60 etc. :)

I guess what I was asking is will ADD help slightly mis-exposed footage more than it will help well-exposed footage, narrowing the gap between the two levels of exposing.

Don't know if you've had a chance to play with the software beta... just hoping to pre-plan where to allocate my time... exposure science '-) or workflow drudge macheen.

I have heard this mentioned a few times.

Our snapshots have always output true pixels (as they should be), and not put in a DPI ( print output ) container.

If you are opening snapshot Tiffs in photoshop it is going to open to your screen DPI ( which default is 72dpi ) but you can change that default in your photoshop preferences under Units and Rulers.

It has no effect on the native image quality, DPI is just an output ratio for dots per inch only for print.

For example, if you are opening up your RED tiffs at 72 DPI in photoshop take a look at the image size in inches ( the only thing that matters when you use DPI ) and you will see it is something like 8 feet tall.

My friend wrote this article a few months back...
http://neilvn.com/tangents/image-size-resolution-72dpi-300dpi/

It helps people understand what DPI is.

this is all fantastic news. you guys just can't stop and all to our immense benefit. i'll keep crossing and breaking my fingers that you hit that march time-table for the second priority thou :).

ADD

Hi
This is great news....when can I recieve a mail for the OLPF upgrade.
Further is the ADD the new Dragon Science or part of it.
Thank you again
Harcharan

One of ADD's biggest advantages is in the noise floor.

BINGO! Drudge macheen it is!

ADDITIONAL: And it sounds like ADD could be reason not to need a Redcine version of Neat Video, which is a time burner when rendering.
