  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Reality Check

I have always wondered why nobody has done this as a product. 1 Beyond got close - but never really nailed a rugged "appliance" at a low cost that is totally RED specific - http://1beyond.com/product-categori...mac-wrangler-dude-on-set-data-wrangler-system - but this is the right direction IMO - http://1beyond.com/product-categories/information/lto-netdrive-ltfs-archiving-and-backup-solultion

Small, custom military grade micro-computer running linux. Codex Vault without the over-engineering. I'd do it with no screen - just an Android or HTML5 UI that connect to with wifi - use any tablet to control.

I would like RED to put together a RED 23" "Road Grader".

Like all things RED, its modular. It looks like a 23" laptop.

The Screen is OLED (maybe touchscreen) and the keyboard is actually a color grading control surface, you can add a key board via usb and a pen tool or mouse. Left side has a REDmag slot and the right side has 2 2.5" HHD dock slots 1 for renders, 1 for back up. Inside under the Controlpanel is a Rocket-X, and Titan.

Your choice of running Scratch or Divinci would be nice.

The ability to run 4k monitor would be perfect.

Also the abilty to detach the screen from control panel to put it on a stand would be great too. You could have your office config and then transform into your Road configuration.

yeah, now we're talkin'. Hardcore production tool.

Personally - I think the best product would not even render proxies. Just hard-core auto-detect RED Mags - fast copy, verify to pre-set destinations - wavelet checker - and PDF report generation with thumbnails and meta-data. Just a hard-core VERIFY, CLONER & REPORT box. Dead simple HTML5 interface. This could be built VERY cheaply. No Rocket-X needed. And GREAT for C/Action units and lone shooters working in harsh environments that prohibit a DIT cart or even laptops cabled to TB stuff. I'd do it with an internal RAID 5 and removable shuttle drives that also mount via USB3 - like the G-Tech GDOCK EV - http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-dock-ev-thunderbolt

I can can totally see both the need and the attraction for a dead simple box like this, I'd want it to be 2.5" SSD laptop drives or SSD drives in raid 5, smaller, lighter, less power, etc.. Literally, a small lcd screen just to tell you what is going on. Copying, checking, verified, done.

The reason for the monitoring is the critically important visual verification. You can copy data accurately, but that does not mean the footage is problem free. Need to be able to see, the footage.

Maybe different flavors.

1. RED COPY box
2. Adds visual verification via built in monitor or hdmi, hdsdi port (plug into an existing monitor)
3. Adds dnx HD or Prores HQ proxy render. (Internal rocket style card that does 1920x1080QT

All modular and upgradable by the user through upgrade parts sold through RED store.

So I buy buy the box with option 1 and get drives where ever I want, keep sets of drives for different jobs or client, etc.

buy option 2 or 3 at time of purchase or in future as $, job permits.

i think many, many people would go for something like this over a Meizler module.

Phil -

4 full size XLRs is crazy silly IMO.

What ENG/EFP camera has 4 XLR inputs?

Mark, as I MOSTLY shoot ENG/EFP type stuff, I'll step in here... The MAJORITY of all ENG cameras on the market today HAVE 4 XLR inputs, and we use them all! Back in the early days of Beta, we had four. Now, most of the 'newer' cameras have 2 XLRs in the back and a 5pin XLR up front that is stereo. Often they are 'broken out' so that the camera can indeed record four tracks of audio independently.

So respectfully, I'll disagree. We do need at least four. I have no issue with going to the 'mini XLRs' as that's what Sound Devices is now doing with 744s/788s/664s, etc.

I have been thinking a bit, and see the use of 4 for many applications, too.

The four tracks are very good to have for many applications.

AND the direct 4-button gain control...

No menus. Just push the button (to activate) turn, and push again (to deactivate). 4 of them.

It is useable to activate/deactivate phantom and master gain through a menu, but then...

The RED one had four. Form factor of the EPIC did not really allow for this.

You might call me crazy, but I wish they would have put 2 mini XLR on the EPIC and offered a four input mini XLR as a standalone module. Would be very light and I have all the cables anyway.

Okay - 4 'mini XLRs'. I was just looking at specs on current, newer cameras (F55, etc.) - so good to hear from a hardcore ENG shooter.

4 mini-XLRs would actually fit easy in a slim module. I think I'll make another thread later today and break out what I think RED should do for DSMC MODULES. A complete re-boot, re-design of the PRO-IO module is needed IMO.

Do not forget the knobs... :)

Been asking for something like this for a few years now... just a simple way to get data off our SSDs onto a HHD. I was willing to settle for something less safe than what is proposed, but this way would do the necessary backups and verifications to insure the data.

RED! Let's do this!

(And while you are at the work table, how about a signal repeater for the Red mote?)

Forget the REDMOTE. We need/want WIFI.

Just trying to hold down expenses for us thousands of Redmote owners who feel limited. '-)

(A repeater wouldn't be expensive would it? If not expensive, then perhaps RED would work with a third party as a stopgap solution while working internally on the WIFI module?)

Loved the mini XLRs on the R-1.
