We did a quck test today scarlet mx and dragon.

Its for a deep diving expedition where they will have not much light.

Remember that this is done pixel to pixel so dragon is not using its full potential of 6k.

Still its quite clear To me that dragon by far beats the mx on the low end. Its done in shit tungsten light and the left goal post was fully raised on the cameras and same exposure settings and lens was used and both cameras had a fresh black shade at working temperature an current exposure.

You can download the mov file as a uncompressed 1.5k 8bit quicktime if you are into the details...

Also sorry for the short duration and all the miss spelling in the text in the film... again it came together very quickly :)

Thanks Bjorn for the comparison. Is this with the old or new olpf?

Its the new olpf.

Also worth mentioning.... at 50asa dragon had nice coverage on the light bulb... mx not so much. instead mx showed its classic almost white but magenta tinted flat burnout look :)

haha yeah. Love how with Dragon you can really pull back the highlight info to reveal stuff you thought was blown out. I think that is amazing and something not everyone understands is possible.

The Dragon was clean enough that the Vimeo encoding was distracting.

Thanks Bjorn! Great comparison footage and obvious difference between MX and Dragon...

Thanks for sharing...

I have worked with 4 scarlet mx's and many epic mx's, sometimes on same set as A/B cams, and in all cases the scarlet has more noise than the epic in low light. I wish this comparison was done epic to epic.

I have done the same and when the compression is set to the same epic mx and scarlet mx is the same at the same resolution. And yes also to compare you need to do 4k on both normally if you shoot multi camera with epic and scarlet you do 4k on scarlet and 5k on epic... then yes the difference is there if the resolution, compressions and other setting are the same, then scarlet and epic mx looks the same even when digitally giving it a linear exposure push to look down in the deep blacks. So it is important to compare apples with apples.

So scarlet mx 4k 7:1 is not comparable to epic mx 5k 3:1.

That's a great test Bjorn because it displays that it's a two step process, capture and process.
R3d like film has so much more information compared to the wysiwyg on the monitor.

Plus, we forget that once a look is "dialled in" we tend to grade out a lot of what is at first, 'noisy'.

Björn,

thanks for this test. I was actually waiting for something like this. While I also don´t see any remarkable difference between Epic and Scarlet MX I was wondering how much the low CT is doing a flavor to bring the red noise down fellows are complaining about since the new color science / OLPF. Anyway, quite impressive :-)

Cheers, Ulf

Hi Bjorn,
Thanks for this comparison. In your opinion doing a Scarlet update you still went for a Scarlet Dragon instead of an Epic MX? What do you value more, the frame rates or the image quality?

Bjorn,

Interesting that you chose tungsten light to create your dark environment. Tungsten is mostly red light, and deep underwater it's mostly blue light. Have you thought about testing the blue side of the sensors?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post but this was a test between Scarlet MX and Epic Dragon, not Epic MX and Scarlet Dragon.
