Thank you for pointing me towards the Media Guide. Having bought the 128 SSD's back with the Red One, I never thought to look for a guide (and never needed one) since that document did not exist at that time.
The missing bit of information with the cryptic spreadsheets everyone has been sending me was the compression being expressed as a single digit number ("4" instead of "4:1") The first page of the spreadsheets in the manual decodes this in the opening paragraph.
It's a vast pile of data, so I printed out the pages for the 128 1.8" SSDs (my current ones) and the 512 minis. It's not a really big difference in terms of compression (6K @ 24fps is 4:1 versus 5:1) so I'm still unsure what to do. But at some point, the minis will be the standard I'm sure, so investing in more full size SSDs may not make sense.
The backwards compatibility thing is a little frustrating. If I'm the only one in New York with the minis, and a production wants more, it's a big scramble. Although I suppose our old friends at offhollywood have them.
I will report back on my decision in case anyone is interested...

If it's any comfort I'm looking to likely make the switch soon-ish to the MiniMags.
They are bigger in capacity, smaller in size, less expensive in price, and faster to download. That combined with the REDCODE benefits are sort of hard to ignore.
I do think of places like larger rental houses that have a fairly heavy investment in media and deciding to make the switch. Or what would be more likely, a transition.

Agreed, Phil. With some of this stuff it's better to be a little ahead of the curve I think.
I have a similar situation with Amira. I have an Alexa that I'm selling, and would hold back some SxS cards (as I have many) but it doesn't matter, as Arri has switched to a new generation CF-style card.
If anyone has both SSDs and Minimags, and would be kind enough to download similar amounts of data via the same pipeline, I'd be keen on seeing the boost in offload time.
Again, I did a search but came up empty.

What speeds do the new ones have? My 512GB old version has a read speed of 220MB/s but I haven't tested the new firmware yet

Personally I wouldn't say that it's worth it to sell off 1.8" since the 240GB is so competitive. But if you're just starting out, no reason to go 1.8" since they're the same price, but smaller physically.

Can we get an idea of relative offload times by the small difference in compression ratios? Or are the compression ratios still limited by brain processing capability? I'm not sure the minis will be significantly faster in offload times but would love to see some kind of test or spec as well. It might be good to switch over for now as there is still some demand for the 1.8" SSDs in the used market. I'm still waiting a bit to see though....
