  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon = Mini Mag 512's?

Now that my upgrade is in process I'm wondering about Dragon's data requirements.
Specifically I'm wondering about low compression 6K, highspeed limitations, and offload times. I note that on the sales page, the regular SSDs are now deemed "optimized for Scarlet". Will that mean, in practice, that our older SSDs will be limited with Dragon to certain compression/ speed combinations?
I was thinking that maybe faster offloads and better performance would warrant buying into the mini-mag setup, but the wide availability of the other SSDs means that if I need more mags on a specific shoot, they are easy to rent or borrow from friends. It's too bad Red did not keep the current form-factor and make the new side module backwards compatible.
Any current Dragon owners care to opine? Which way did you go and why?
Cheers,
Harry

If you find yourself shooting a good amount of high speed work the extra REDCODE compression ratio boost from the MiniMags, new 1.8" 240GB, and the older 1.8" 512GB will be a welcome feature.

As Chris mentioned the faster downloads are very useful for some of the modern on set workflows/offloads.

Another benefit is the size of the MiniMags. Kitting out 4-16mags (or even more) takes up space. The MiniMags are tiny and very suitable for people concerned about kit size and weight.

Also, if I'm not mistaken there will be a 1TB MiniMag at some point. If you find yourself needing real long roll times the 512GB and potential larger capacities might be welcome.

Lots of options. None bad. Just decisions to be made.

Red offers 240Gb ones if you have old Side SSD module.Dont get what you mean with red didnt keep new side module backwards compatible. Its completely different interface. You dont have to buy the mini Side SSd module.

Faster offloading too.

and cheaper

I've posted about this before. We need a MiniMag rear DSMC module which we can use as well as the 1.8" original Redmag Side Module. I doubt there's the bandwidth to record to both simultaneously, and firmware would have to lock out incompatible compression modes if a relay recording mode was offered, but it would help costs and emergencies to be able to use both types of media.

I work almost exclusively in commercials, so it's not longer recording times or lighter kit that I'm interested in, just getting the maximum performance out of the camera. I have quite a few of the 128s (10 per camera) so I'm not keen on having to move to different media and replacing all those cards (I think the minimum number of mags with ANY camera is 3, but 5 is better, for a variety of reasons)
Phil, are you saying that the new 240's enable all the same compression/ speed options of the mini? I'd gladly buy a few more of those, and keep my 128's as well.
Kemalettin, I understand they are completely different. I meant that it's a shame that they did not make the larger capacity/ better performance/ faster offload media simply in the same physical container of the "old" SSDs. Yes, you'd need a new side module, but it would be the same size as, and backwards compatible with, the old media.
Thanks for all the replies. I agree, decisions must be made! ;)

The faster offloading is a factor to weigh in on as well. Anyone have real-world experience with offloading the same amount of data from each? Times?

Or maybe pick up a rear module to enable the use of the "old" mags...
I can't seem to find definitive documentation anywhere that indicates if the faster speed of the minis lets you go with lower compression at high frame rates... anyone from Red care to chime in?
Cheers,
Harry

The internet is vast:

i would go 240Gb instead of mini mags we dont know they are gonna be compatible with next brain.Since you already have old SSDs just add few 240GB on the batch.

I'm pretty confident the mini's will be part of the new ecosystem.

I certainly hope so, as I just a few hours ago traded my "old" Carbon Fiber SSD, for the 'NEW" Carbon Fiber MINI SSD and Mini Mag 512.

Thank you very much

The new 240GB are a great option. So are the existing 512GB turbo Mags, if you can actually get ahold of them. If setting up a new camera system, go with the minis -- they're what's next. They're awesome.

It's a bitch to change over, though if you're already invested in current 256 and 512 GB REDMAGs. I completely switched over and didn't get hurt too bad on the exchange, but I'm 1.5TB of storage lighter after the change up. I'll have to pick up more, but I'm really liking the minis better overall. It's hard to coordinate with other productions around here though. I think I'm about the only one in town that's totally running the minis now. I did keep two of the USB3 REDMAG readers just in case I need to deal with them.
