Just bought a set of Lomo Anamorphic Square Fronts. Here's a nonscientific test I did. Tried to match exposure as best I could by adjusting ISO. The 50 is definitely the sharpest, then the 80. The 35 also flares a lot. Is this normal?Let me know if you have any thoughts/questions. Overall I'm super happy with how these are looking on Dragon at 6k!

Thanks!
Mike

Edit: I had my 35mm serviced by Bernie at Super 16, and now it's matching the 50 and 80 perfectly! Here are some test shots with my Dragon:

Michael, these grabs are gorgeous. Where did you find the lens set? I've been wanting to get a set of these myself.

They're straight from Russia! You just need to be comfortable buying them sight unseen, haha!

Ahh - so you caved in... the anamorphic lure was too much after all :)

Glad to see all looks OK.

Gorgeous. Since childhood, to me the anamorphic look was THE look of big screen Cinema. I have a softest spot for ANA and older glass, can't help it. Glad some of the oldies (not just anamorphic ones) are living and breathing again (no pun intended), being put to good use on digital cameras. And you know what, most of them look awesome, since 4K+ sensors and modern lenses are so sharp (some even say too sharp). Cool flares, a bit of diffusion, so what? It's all good. Merry Christmas everyone ;).

P.S.
I know this is not a "grade my red" thread and these are only low res Jpegs, but I was curious how it would look with 35mm film look preset and different WB. Just for fun, no bad intentions.

Thanks Vadim! I didnt mess with colors as I was just trying to see what they look like naturally, but I love your grade. How did you achieve it? I can upload the r3ds if you or anyone else wants to try something out.

Mike, those images look fantastic sir! I'm a little curious that the angle of view between the 50 and 80 specifically where the Christmas tree is concerned looks strange to me... did you move the camera between these two? I'd imagine you moved back a little to get the objects in the foreground to fit the 80... just curious.

Did you get the 30 as well? Are these PL or OCT19 mount?
Great job! Can't wait to see more footage posted :0)

PS: Throw a little more light on them next time and close down the aperture... curious to see how they sharpen up as you stop down... post some vid caps if you have the chance!!!

Merry Christmas

I love me some square fronts. I really think they are a superb look. Congrats on the set.

Hey Brandon,

Thanks man! You're totally right about the 50 and 80. I had them labeled backwards (I just fixed the original photos). And yes I did move the camera for each shot. Not exactly a scientific test as I mentioned.

Actually the seller was showing me the wrong photo. It was a 35mm that was part of the set, not the 30, however, the seller does have that 30 for sale. Let me know if you're still interested in it and I'll link you guys up.

These are all PL mounted.

Definitely need to do this kind of test again at T4, Just need to fire up some movie lights to augment the chandelier.

Thanks again for all of your advice regarding the square fronts. Brandon is an expert on this subject if anyone needs guidance!

Merry Xmas to you too!
Mike

Here's an update for those who are interested: I installed the new beta firmware with Dragoncolor 2, and did another test with the same setup as before. This time I got some more exposure by blasting a 1k into the ceiling (augmenting the chandelier) and stopped down to T4 at ISO 800. All three lenses really start to sharpen up! The 35mm is still milkier than the 50 and 80, which I think is due primarily to flare. Can anyone tell me if the 35mm is more prone to flaring, and if so, how do you deal with matching it to the other lenses? I compensated for this by adjusting contrast and brightness in Redcine. I'm also including the R3Ds for anyone who wants to take a closer look. I'd love to see people's grades, so please feel free to share.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike!

The 35mm lens might need to be checked if it is so much softer than the rest. I doubt it flares so much more than the rest of the set.

Duclos can check and adjust any internal elements, if needed. I'd have him (or someone else) take a look.

Cheers my friend!

That's what I'm afraid of. The back element (PL side) looks a bit hazy, and I'm thinking it could be fungus. Maybe it needs to be polished up a bit? You'll notice on the 35mm shot the christmas tree lacks the contrast that it has on the 50 and 80.
