DRAGON - ITS THE REAL DEAL !!!!

The footage looks great. It seems like you had an MX with you as well. Is there any side by side comparisons? I know you said that wasn't going into the reel, but it would be important in making an informed decision. I keep hearing about 3 more stops and better color, but I'd love to see some side by side. Maybe someone else is doing something like that.

You'll get the chance soon enough. Hopefully the DRAGON is everything we want it to be.

Mt. Jannard, I thought I was doing quite the opposite. But if this forum is a marketing tool then by all means, I will refrain from any more observations regarding Mark's footage. I just thought I was making constructive observations regarding one specific 'problem' of the footage I saw, nothing else.

I did it because I care. Because I love to shoot Red. And to my eye, it seems like the same old problem is still there. But I hope I'm wrong, I hope that once I shoot Dragon and grade it, this won't be a problem. Because that's what I want, I want my camera to be bullet proof, and not crack down with a highlight.

I can rent any camera I want for my jobs, but I choose Red every time. Not because I want to make you happy, but because that's the image I like most. I choose the example from the Alexa, because so far its the only camera that has been handling highlights better, but that is it's only advantage to Red (Epic), everything else about Alexa I really don't care all that much compared to Red.

Don't worry I'm not trying to stir the pot, life's too short for that kind of nonsense. I just want to make sure I know what the Dragon really is, that's all.

I agree.

Wow!!

In HD the in camera Black an Withe shot looks as if shot on Monochrome... Insane!!

A while back I wrote on one of the Monochrome threads how I wished the Dragon sensor would look like the Epic Monochrome but with color... it looks like it does that and some!
Congrats Jim, Jarred, and the entire Red team, this is truly an amazing achievement. Mark, thank you for all your time and hard work.

Mark, you stayed, as we knew you would, true to your word - a hands on user experience - not a clinical bench test. Real world situations that many of us work with every time we pick up our cameras. As you have said, you love to shoot and it shows (always has).

The results you produced in only 48 hours serves this community well. The range of shots and attention to detail by providing the tech specs is exactly what many of us were looking for. Jim chose wisely. Thank you for the time you spent to test, capture and share the images with us.

Personally, I do not need a side by side with an EPIC-X. Or with other cameras. I like what I see and I'm glad I chose to be in line for the upgrade. To say that it's exciting is an understatement.
Effective DR is beyond my expectations. Everything looks so natural - so fluid.

Digital has truly come of age with the Dragon.

Congratulations to everyone at RED that contributed to this achievement.
Jim, you have every reason to be proud.

Brian,

You could'nt have said it any better. Thank Mark, Jim, Jarrad and RED Team.

That my lad, was a DRAGON!

congrats RED . Everything looks great . low light, dynamic range, skin tones seem to look richer now(perhaps would be nice to see more testing).

As always a classy effort from Mark. IMHO images look great especially in the context they have had only a basic "one light" grade. Impressed by the image quality at the high compression rates at low light levels. Do not try this at home with the MX chip.
Initially a little disappointed that we are only seeing an extra stop in the highlights although the two extra stops in the shadows are welcome. I realise this is only early days but the Epic DR performance now pips the Alexa by a nose . This should now give the Epic Dragon the advantage in every area of performance although colour science remains to be fully explored.
I would be interested Mark in your thoughts on the Dragons "variable ASA" where the highlight clip and noise floor points no longer change with ASA setting? Did you see any of the performance parameters change from 200asa to 2000asa?
I was kind of hoping that Dragon was going to seriously outperform the Alexa in terms of DR as there is an arms race and I have no doubt Arri are presently building a new sensor that will outperform their present chip. Don't get me wrong I understand it is early days and the Dragon may not have fully unfurled its wings. I already have my money in the bank and will upgrade at the very first opportunity Red gives me.

Mark, I was going to ask about variable ND mount but as someone pointed out this was shot with canon glass.

So my question given the lower ISO settings achievable .....how much ND are you using in the great Aussie outdoors, more or less?

It has been stated a few times already but I'll continue to remind everyone that these are 1st tests... and we are really proud of the results. But fear not... we have a thousand knobs to turn to extract more from this package.

Jim

Seems a lot of people posting don't get it that this thread is not about them and what they can do... it's about what Mark has done in a short amount of time with a new camera system and minimal tools that are able to do actual 6k finish.

I am not sure I clearly understand what was used to decode Mark's footage. Is my understanding correct that the Dragon color science is not actually finished, and something else, or something not quite done was used? What was used, and in what stage of development? What was pretty striking to me, was how far I could push such a tiny little file (the upload file, 385mb) to extract what I thought was a little better color when I put the .mov downloaded from Vimeo into DaVinci. That may illustrate how good the acquisition footage must be. I do understand that Mark's footage was ungraded. While impressed with many aspects of the image, I am hoping to see better (deeper or thicker looking) color performance in the future.

I hope you turn all these knobs by September, Mr. Jannard.

And after the release, too - as usual.

Thanks!

Nicely done RED!

Thanks Mark for all this work too!

I was anticipating improvements, but this image massive definition, texture, smoothness and color definition are simply wonderful.
