  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON IN POST

Todd, I'm running a post boutique similar to Björn's, based on Red and ADSK but smaller, taylored to my personal needs. When we come home and have a bunch of shots to be developed I ask my MacPros to do the job. This is sufficient for TVCs and long-form projects and will take about 1 hour or so. So quite frankly I don't understand what you are asking for. An old 2009 MacPro with a Nivida 680 will decode Dragon R3Ds to 1080p RGB just under RT when you shoot at 5K HD.

If you need more power get more 2009 MPs and the suitable amount of Geforce cards. No need for RRX, IMHO.

The dragon footage coming off my camera drops into Premiere without any issues. I simply just created a 6K preset time, dragged, and dropped.

AE on the other hand does NOT recognized Dragon footage at all.

which version of Premiere?

is this Dragon footage from latest cameras with updated OLPF?

I can't get Premiere to recognize our Dragon footage

There are tons of archive material still kept on Betacam SP, Digibeta, DVCAM, MiniDV, DVCPRO, HDV, DVCPROHD, HDCAM etc.

I know a couple of houses keeping the decks for projects which depend on that valuable archive material, since majority of humanity's motion imaging content is captured and stored on some type of tape media, and a significant portion of it is yet to be digitalised. :)

That might be true. I'm super happy not having to deal with any of that, ditch all tape decks after D6 and HDBeta cam back in 2006 have not looked back since... People though I was crazy when I told them there is no real tape format that holds quality so we will work to and from file, and we actually managed to sell our decks and get some money for them... today those decks are flying pretty low on ebay :)

Thanks Björn.

We are working on an array system and the fast transcodes would really be helpful to not have to wait two to three days to test the footage we are shooting for our camera and system tests. The expectation that transcoding should move a little quicker comes from the fact that RED has actually released a product to provide faster than real-time transcoding, it just seems that this product is impossible to get - even for top post-facilities like ours. This is really what I'm confused about as the best VFX houses in the world, in my opinion, shouldn't be on a waiting list to get the product, they should be the first ones because these are the places that service the most number of shows and are most likely creating the work that will get the most eyeballs on it to promote RED technologies.

You buy a graphics card in the PC gaming store for less than what the post houses charge for an hour and then you can playback at 1:2 or 1:4 without transcoding and you got instant playback in most of the new NLE's... and if you need rendering you are above .5 realtime. Also the quality for viewing is not really much different from doing transcodes.

Yes I think our MP's is about that age aswell and yes if the material is laying on fast media they go through r3d's faster than I drink my latte. If there needs to be faster than realtime and a lot of material... well yes then it's usually on more than one disk and then if there is a rush we can render on two machines... And if the debayer is set to low which I think is more than fine for proxies then there is not much time for coffee.

I will only buy a Rocket X when there is a nice small solution to use it with my little laptop setup on set. For post houses I find it only needed if you want to work and display 4k in full glory in realtime while grading or such. But for transcodes on stationary machines it's quite a luxury thing to use. Better then with low cost graphics boards.

Works for me as well.
Latest Premiere CC Version (7.2.2)
Epic Dragon w/ New OLPF
Firmware V5.1.50

When recording the footage, did you choose DragonColor/RedGamma4 in Camera? If yes, that could be the issue, My camera was set to RedColor3/RedGamma3
Post a trim of your R3D so we can test it out

Thanks all. Operator error.
It works now.
If you don't mine me asking, what was the error or thing that made the footage not work in premiere?

wrong version. Its actually complicated, it was a mac with older OS X (for SAN reasons)...when they installed CC it looked like the system was updated when in fact it wasn't. The CC installer needs some work.
