  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ok,

This thread is for people who are working with the Dragon cameras, and would like to constructively suggest improvements or areas you'd like to see improved.

There has been plenty about "noise" so we can leave that one off the list as we all know it is being addressed.

Some stuff I would like to see improved/implemented.

1. Boot time. I think it's up to around 30 seconds so it has crept up over MX, still I'd like to see it reduced.
2. Multiple Black Shading in the release build.
3. Option to have RAW view set back to what we have been used to since day one. ('I'm on the fence on this if a kick ass LUT implementation is coming)
4. Option to set dumb lens focal length and have that show up in metadata. When I switch from a 19mm to a 50mm I just want to be able to quickly set that manually so it shows up in metadata.

That's my list for now. I'm sure the creative minds here could find a bunch more stuff. Mine are all on a basic operational level.

To add to the list of things you really like about dragon:

5. In the latest beta firmware sometimes dragon starts with all the colors messed up and gives an error. When you restart it returns back to normal. It would be good not to have it in the coming stable firmware.

A strong teflon coated double magnet (one for mounting on the tripod, the other mounted on base of or side of camera (to give a portrait orientation.) This of course assuming the magnets would not interfere with the workings of the camera in any way.

-1

Strong magnets have a way of wrecking all kinds of things in sensitive studio environments. I'd be furious to discover that my $15K microphone was warped because some idiot brought a strong magnet into the studio.

Good point.

I would think it wise to put up a strongly worded idiot-proof sign warning "Do not bring strong magnets into this studio!" and in different languages as well.

On the other hand, I have some pretty strong magnets in my "studio" environment and have experienced no adverse effects. But I don't place them on my microphones. '-)

Would it not be great if you could give custom names to the "Multiple Black Shading in the release build."?

I agree about boot time, when I got my Epic M firmware 1.61 or there about boot time was 8 seconds, so yes it's now way too long.

I get around this by mounting a second tripod plate on the left side rails of the camera.

Takes 5 seconds to go into portrait mode.

I went through a lot of the 40 page thread but did not find a consensus, will the magenta banding next to highlights be resolved?

+1 on that.

- Reliable connection to Remote
- Ability to invert screen properly

So do shipping cameras have the old OLPF or the new one?

Cameras ship with the new OLPF and Calibration. However, if you desire the older tech Red will allow you to have it. Speak to your Bomb Squad Rep during the order or upgrade process if that's something you're after.

Black shading preset Action:

You should be able to preconfigure a large number of black shading configs for both exposure time AND temperature and save that list to a file, (some sort of action file).
Then after upgrading firmware you could just run that list as a batch action, and the camera would run through all your black shading requests - multiple shutter speeds and temperatures.

I know that only 4 can be saved to the camera, but more can be saved to the SSD.

It would mean that after upgrading firmware you could just put in an SSD (with your black shading instruction list loaded on) hit GO and the camera would run through every black shading parameter you have preset it to do.

Auto Black shade selection.

The dragon should automatically choose the closest matching black shading on it's own while you are shooting. If its smart enough to change the colour of the T/E it should be able to just select a different black shade calibration for you on the fly.

I would be really happy to get some variant of 1:1 magnification out the HD-SDI port during recording. My #1 problem is not highlights or shadows, but focus.

What about an "unbalanced" compression mode for HDRx. When recording at 10:1, instead of giving both frames 10:1 compression, perhaps giving one frame 9:1 and one frame 11:1, or one frame 1:8 and the other 1/13. (I realize that 1/9+1/11 is 1% more than 1/10+1/10, and that 1/8+1/13 is nearly 2% more, but it could well be that there's enough headroom to provide that extra 1%-2% while gaining 10%-20% in the frame where you need it, and giving up the 10%-30% in the frame where you don't.)

Sure would be awesome to be able to send image data out the GigE port. A dedicated 1Gbps port should be able to transmit 6K @ 6:1 or thereabouts. How cool would it be to have disk-based backup without needing to offload the card! If there's only enough CPU to do half of that, 5K @ 8:1 would still be nice.
