We have been doing a lot of HDRx shooting over the past month for a project and I have been loving the results. Some scenes (like the shot in the Redwoods) almost required it, others not so much. Either way, what a nice feature to have at your disposal!

Would be cool to see an HDR grade. You can do it today if you have a Dolby PRM or another display that is capable of 1000 nits. You need to apply the PQ (SMPTE 2084) curve in a LUT box and grade against it.

How did you blend the tracks together?

That's actually what I'm working on at the moment!

I'm curious how you blended as well. I hardly ever use HDRx as the blending is generally a lot of work in post. I don't find that either of the two canned Redcine blends works very well. Once you toss those out you are left with a masked approach in AE. It works and can give good results but boy it can be a lot of render time and work. I would love to see a really purpose-built blend tool that makes the most of the data collected.

I used Blend and/or Magic Motion for most of it. Then I would mask in spots where needed.

Loved the shots Luke.

Now could you or anyone else offer their experience/opinion on a rule of thumb for the type of scenes where using HDRx would enhance the footage?

Honestly, I usually have at least 1-2 stops on all nature shots just in case. Not everything though, as I would rather have better compression if exposure is OK without HDRx.

Nice shots. Some of my first shots when I got my Dragon last year were at Bodie ghost town out the windows, hdrx definitely saved the shot with deep interior shade and super bright exteriors.

Ha ha, yup for sure! We had snow outside this time so it was almost necessary even on exteriors!

Luke those shots are amazing!

I would be interested to have (if it's available) an HDRx tutorial. Best practices and also extreme cases sort o thing. I find blending the two frames difficult and would love some kind of direction on it.
Would any of you guys be willing to post something like that?

The forest shots are a compelling reason to use HDRx. I shot a lot of footage back a couple years in Big Sur. This technique gives me a good reason to go back and do it right.

Did you try any 6k?
