  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

Will there be a new OLPF for Epic using a similar OLPF design ?

Same thing... the OLPF is a month away so if your Dragon is due before then you can either have it wait at RED for the filter to come in and do everything at once, or send it back at a later time to get upgraded. Obviously if you are far away from a RED repair center, the first option might be best.
How do we exercise first option? Can that be done for cameras presently at RED for upgrade?

just a question, which might have already been answered, when se send in our Epics for the Dragon Upgrade will the OLPF be installed?

Ha ha post of the month....

I like it as well, just stick the old stuff in there and then possibly we swap later. :)

I dont think that would work since the camera would expect the other olpf to go with the color science.

If you really want the old OLPF then you can keep it in.. this is not a mandatory upgrade for you guys that have it and it is not a "recall"... it is completely your choice. We will be shipping the new filter with new cameras going forward when they are available in a month, but if you want the old filter, just let your BS rep know.

Also don't make judgements on the images in terms of light loss etc... the color science is not done yet, as I mentioned in my first post.

Thanks Jarred on the hard work on this issue. Will this upgrade also deal with the dot pattern sensor flare too?

Just thinking out loud and I assume the answer is No or else RED would have already offered this but couldn't you offer the firmware upgrade now and then let them perform the OLPF later? Seems like wonky color science for a month would be better than no-camera for a month.

Yep, I'm sure Jarred means its not a user process, but a red tech only one. But there's a world of difference between back to base in LA (we just went to the trouble of sending someone over with the camera from the UK this week, for necessary updates), and popping up the road to Pinewood, which is minutes away and a regular visit regardless...

I think you guys should mandate the new OLPF even if people like the old one. The last thing you need is bad buzz about inconsistent sensors, DP's worrying about which OLPF they'll end up with when renting, etc etc. Dragon should have a rock solid reputation with totally predictable behavior. You can get all kinds of flares with lenses after all.....

is the first image a result of the new color science ? ( i mean the long waited color science )

skin looks richer ... better

g

I too kinda liked it... here's a pic of the touch screen from a recent shoot... I liked the flare aroudn the lights it created in this instance... of course, I don't ALWAYS want a flare, so the new OLPF is definitely going on my Carbon...

Yeah... you bring up a good point and all cameras going forward will have the new filter, but the option is still there for unique customers that really want it, just like we make a few custom no-low pass and IR pass OLPF versions of our cameras. The camera firmware and UI will state the fact which filter is there and we need to have a little faith in all you guys that the people that have the old filter in the cameras will represent it as such.. you will not want the old filter unless you really really want those flares. There are some people that spend alot of money to break an image.. Anamorphics in a different way and there are even some guys stripping Anti Reflective coatings off of Masterprimes to bounce light around like a house of mirrors.

That said and to reinforce your point, it is why we are hard coding the cameras rather than just making it a switch in the camera firmware. Owners of cameras may remember to flick that switch, but rental customers who reset firmware and change settings may not and that would lead to cameras with funky colors and non-matching cameras...

Great points on both sides Eric and Jarred. I'm am often at the forefront of battling misconceptions about Epic cameras from someone's previous experience with a DP that didn't know the proper way to handle digital. 95% of the time I'm successful. Now with the DR on the Dragon sensor, I cannot see a losing side to my arguement to shoot Epic of Alexa. My last job I swayed it away from Alexa studios to Dragon cameras and happy to have done so. I'm curious what NAB will bring from both sides, new Red developments and what Arri will step up to the plate with.

My only let down is my camera is with you guys NOW... I wish the OLPF was ready. Fortuantely I live in SoCal, so it's not as bad for me as it is on someone like Toia, clear on the other end of creation!
