  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

This is really cool…But do I see a little loss of light with the new OLPF?

This.

Graeme is going to kick my ass for posting this image because he is still in the middle of the new color science that goes with the new OLPF, but I thought it was important to share with you an example of the new filter as the difference is meaningful, and an image is worth a thousand words.

I really want to say, this clears up the only image quality wiggle that Dragon had. I've been testing it hard for a few weeks. Now the one thorn is removed and this thing can really roar.

Where's Sanjin btw? He would be very happy.

In case the flare wasn't obvious... some level adjustments...

This is huge! Dammit I dont want to start any dragon dreams just yet.

How about the strength of the filter. Is the olpf much less "strong" than on mx? On mx i think its little stronger than it has to.

God I'm going to ask the question I always hate to be asked ("I know it's not done yet but is that how it's going to look?") but...there appears to be a nearly horizontal flare through the bottom of the frame is that from the OLPF?

I assume that's just Graeme doing a split screen to do an A/B comparison but figured I would ask. ;)

EDIT: Yeah, that's a photoshop glitch now that I look carefully. Ignore me. (In my defense I also found an errant roto shape in the new Doctor Who Christmas Special. I'm hardwired to spot roto glitches. :P)

Ha ha post of the month....

Fantastic news!!

Even so I do love what the flaring with current OLPF does, it is most pleasing only in certain situation, and while even then it can be removed in post with some level adjustments and other tricks as we did in Resolve, it is a great move on RED's part to have immediately went and worked hard to deliver a new one... BRAVO!!

Also besides keeping the flare with color spills under control it seems clear that the new OLPF brings even an added level of blacks, obviously partly coming from the elimination of the flare it self, love it!!

Was this responsible for the CA issues the Xenon FF lenses were having on Dragon?

No. The CA "issues" are what is exhibited with this level of glass when shooting wide open and wider apertures in high contrast situations. It is the same for the CA exhibited on all lenses under those conditions. However, certain lenses do render that effect rather colorless, but then you're dealing with a whole different price point.

That had nothing to do with this OLPF.

The image with the new OLPF looks much darker... is this OLPF going to cause a serious loss of light or were these images exposed differently? If we're losing that much light I might just stick with the old OLPF

It's also not that much darker, but they do need to finish up the color science and tuning before anybody makes a call like that. I could see a slight loss of light if there's some sort of anti-reflection coating, but we're talking like crazy minimal.

I hope it's crazy-stupid minimal at the very least

I would not worry...

If those images are in any way an indication of a side-by side shot with same exposure, I see reasons to believe that you can get away with a lower exposure with the new OLPF with less side-effects.
I will NOT go on a pixel-peeking rampage based on these preliminar images, but I see a lot I like from that comparison. The flare is only one of them. It fits pretty well with what I hoped the new color-science would be about.
