  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.29

Some thoughts for improvements
- Performance in the menus have gone down. It usually takes 1 second for a menu to appear now, this was faster before. If you can make it a bit snappier this will make it nicer to use.
- Performance in the help was especially low. Maybe you can turn off the reading from the sensor while in the big menus. It seems like its doing something very expensive making it crawl.

Are you using a 9" Touch LCD? If so, please try changing this setting:
Menu > Settings > Display > Monitor Control > Advanced > "Use Small Dialogs on 9" LCD"

why not fix cable location?

why not fix cable location?

Love all the latest developments at RED.
One small piece of constructive criticism:
If there is indeed a mini mag side recorder coming soon - wouldn't it make sense to correct a design flaw and place the monitor/EVF connector in the back or the side of the unit?
The connector in front of the recorder gets in the way of the lens mount. ACs hate that... fumbling around that cable during lens changes.

Can you have a regular size SSD module rear mounted and the mini mag SSD side mounted and switch between them at will? This would take the sting out of having a lot of full sized SSDs and still being able to utilize them in a pinch.

Or, even have a rear mount mini SSD module to compliment the current side mount SSD module.

Or like Codex has an SXS adaptor in the new Alexa XT, have a MiniMag module fit into a full-size SSD slot via an adaptor. Probably be one or the other methinks.

The new mini mags looks cool. One wish I have for them is a more secure way of making sure the memory card doesn't fall out. A little door that you can have in front for example or a way to snap them shut. Nearly lost a 512GB while filming from a snow mobile. It probably got a bump from my and nearly fell out (argh!). So similar to DSLRs where you basically hide the memory card instead of having it sticking out from the camera.

For myself thunderbolt would be very helpful as well since our whole setup is based around thunderbolt. Our Apple Retinas only have 2 usb ports and they are always taken, but with chaining we can have 16 thunderbolt devices. The PERFECT solution would be to have USB3 and thunderbolt on the same reader.

Best wishes!

Jeez! A naked camera on a snowmobile!?!? Perhaps you could at least use some cloth tape to assist if you plan on doing many snowmobile shots... haha

+1 on Thunderbolt.

I never really saw the need for the rear SSD module but a Rear mini mag module would be useful to ease the transition to the new media and allow me to use both on a job that was media intensive.

Excellent point Jose!

The connector is in the worst possible place.

But then, AC's only ever want smaller 128GB Mags, so they can keep the downloading happening all day. I have never had any demand for larger capacities...

I love 128's. I hate 512's. You know how long it takes to download a 512!?! haha

Ugh... and 1TB's... sigh. Might need an overnight DIT...or a thunderbolt 2 redmag reader. One or the other. ;)

Actually its not that bad. It takes 42 minutes if you get the right equipment. I use a GTech Raid Thunderbolt that can write about 300MB/sec which is more than needed for the 210MB/sec from the 512GB Card.

I will copy it to 2 sources so all in all the total time is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
If we get faster SSD read speeds from the SSD cards we would of course improve this time even more.

Is the actual physical sizing of the MiniMag available somewhere? Just trying to compare to 1.8" Mags

Does this help?
